Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Scorio (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
An amnesiac man who wakes in a numbered copper tomb with only his name and an impression of death. Decisive under pressure, he risks himself to help three strangers and takes the lead when the group approaches its first unknown passage.
Leonis (Supporting)
Appears from the start
One of the people who awaken without memories among the copper tombs. He joins Scorio and Lianshi, helps pull Asha from her tomb, and becomes part of the four-person group trying to understand their apparent deaths and unfamiliar surroundings.
Lianshi (Supporting)
Appears from the start
An amnesiac woman who wakes near Scorio and Leonis and joins their search for a way forward. She knows only her name and the sensation of having died, but quickly works with the others as they assess the tomb chamber and its strange exit.
Asha (Minor)
Appears from the start
The fourth member of Scorio's first group, rescued as she slips back into her copper tomb. She is the first to describe the troubling sense that an inner faculty should be present but cannot be reached.
Praximar (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 5
The Chancellor of Bastion's Academy and Autocrater of House Hydra. He presides over the newly reborn cohort's orientation, explains the gauntlet and the Great Souls' purpose, and orders Scorio seized when the Archspire places him on the Red List.
Jova Spike (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 5
The leading finisher in the rebirth gauntlet and an exceptional returning Great Soul. The Archspire identifies her as an Imperator with 163 rebirths, marking her immediately as the cohort's most accomplished entrant.
Ravenna Accardi (Minor)
First appears in chapter 5
A veteran Great Soul recognized among the few entrants who reached the gauntlet's fifth chamber. The Archspire identifies her as a former Charnel Duke with 189 rebirths, establishing her as one of the cohort's leading competitors.
Hestia (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A Red List prisoner surviving in the caverns below the Final Door. She has endured the underground region for about a year and belongs to a small band preparing an escape attempt when Scorio encounters them.
Nissa (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 7
A Red List exile who has survived in the Warrens for three years and insists that her condemnation was false. Repeated carvings of her own name suggest earlier incarnations may also have been imprisoned there.
Havert (Minor)
First appears in chapter 7
A member of the hidden Warrens refuge who helps bring Scorio to safety. He explains how the refuge survives periodic fiend incursions and supports the group's plan to raise the brass door and seek a route out.
Salamander (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 7
The self-named planner and herbalist of the Warrens refuge. Volatile but capable, he treats Scorio's fever and organizes a pulley-based attempt to open the brass door, while closely guarding what he knows about his missing friend Rattart.
Rattart (Minor)
First appears in chapter 7
Salamander's missing explorer friend, known through the refuge's account of his deliberate journey into the Warrens. Unlike the unpowered prisoners, he had ignited his heart and carried unusual tools suited to dangerous exploration.
Helena (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 10
A musician and Feiyan's partner who encounters the newly escaped Scorio in Bastion's ruins. Socially confident and practical, she negotiates food, clothing, information, and useful contacts in exchange for his glowing sunfire.
Feiyan (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 10
Helena's musician partner and a former House Basilisk worker. Critical of Bastion's Great Soul hierarchy, she advises Scorio to hide his ignorance and precarious status while offering an introduction that could give him a foothold.
Dola (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 11
The leader of a criminal crew associated with House Basilisk. She tests Scorio's limits before hiring him, valuing practical ruthlessness while rejecting needless cruelty, and makes clear that her crew can expose him if he breaks their arrangement.
the Nightmare Lady (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 14
A feared ruin-dweller who confronts Scorio and takes his sapphire mana and two treasures. She is an Emberling with a monstrous form, great mobility, claws, and a bladed tail, and she knows far more than he does about ignition.
Naomi (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 16
The woman previously known to Scorio as the Nightmare Lady. After he earns a limited teaching agreement, she gives him her name and begins showing him how to connect his will to his igneous heart and draw ambient mana into it.
Juniper (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 28
One of Jova Spike's roommates and regular training partners at the Academy. Her association with the disciplined, formidable Jova makes her part of the cohort circle Scorio must assess carefully while following the clue from his old locker.
Zala (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 28
One of Jova Spike's roommates and close cohort companions. She trains alongside Jova and Juniper, placing her within the guarded Academy circle surrounding the only clue Scorio has recovered about his former life.
the giant toad (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 30
A huge, speaking creature saturated with coal mana near the abandoned Academy. After nearly carrying Leonis away, it accepts Scorio's offer of release and withdraws rather than continuing a costly fight.
Imogen (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 38
An Imperator who arrives in Bastion inside a vast shadow cloud and seizes the broken Archspire. Overwhelmingly powerful and able to reshape the old Academy, she seeks to force open the portal she believed had already awakened.
the White Queen (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 39
A Charnel Duchess who coordinates Bastion's immediate defense against Imogen. Knowing the Imperator cannot be defeated directly, she supports a strategy of mobile, rotating attacks intended to delay the assault.
Desiree (Minor)
First appears in chapter 39
A Dread Blaze among Bastion's defenders whose ability rapidly develops tactical plans. She proposes rotating strike teams that can harry and delay Imogen without relying on an unrealistic direct victory.
the golden Imperator (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 41
An exceptionally powerful Great Soul who appears to have been Imogen's partner and arrives to oppose her attempt to open the portal. He refuses cooperation because the act would kill Bastion's population and summons more than a hundred spear-bearing reflections.
Kuragin (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 44
An elite Emberling ranked among the cohort's strongest students. Leonis warns Scorio to avoid him, marking the House Kraken-backed fighter as a dangerous Academy rival before they have any direct confrontation.
Gelegos (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 50
A House Camara recruiter able to assess the condition and capacity of Scorio's igneous heart. He finds severe but potentially treatable damage alongside unusual depth and reactivity, and helps evaluate Scorio for conditional sponsorship.
Makiros (Minor)
First appears in chapter 52
A hostile patron at the Flame who accuses Great Souls of exploiting Bastion's residents. He threatens Leonis and the venue before Feiyan expels him, giving personal form to the city's growing anger after Imogen's attack.
Masamash (Minor)
First appears in chapter 55
An Emberling tournament competitor whose powerful leaps shatter the arena floor and carve destructive paths through stone. His escalating attacks make him a severe test of Jova Spike's ability to endure punishment.
Nox (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 57
The giant toad from the old Academy bridge, now introducing himself as an Imperial Ghost Toad. He regards Scorio as a favored friend and offers to guide him through a concealed underground route into the sealed complex.
Eberro (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 69
Scorio's brother and a captured rebellion leader, known through Kuragin's trial account. That vision alleges Scorio betrayed him after an earlier rescue, but the branching nature of trials leaves the historical truth unsettled.
