Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Kael (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A hunted death wizard who washes ashore after a wreck. A dream-walk from Ember gives him reason to believe that she and Max survived the crossing, while his recent captivity and the painful signs of his growing power continue to trouble him.
Ember (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Kael's wife and an Earth-born healer. Though captive with Max in the Wildlands, she reaches Kael through a dream-walk and shows him that they are alive. Her fading connection leaves him with a location but no certain route to her.
Max (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Kael's loyal Earth-born friend and Ember's fellow captive in the Wildlands. His appearance in Ember's dream-walk overturns Kael's belief that both of them died during the crossing and gives Kael another reason to search for the missing group.
Ella (Supporting)
Also known as the White Witch
Appears from the start
An ancient and formidable practitioner of white magic who once trained Desiree's late mentor. She shelters the branded apprentice, promises further training, and redirects her from killing the sought death wizard toward helping him.
Desiree (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A Broken Blade apprentice marked as a traitor after her mentor's death. Her guild has stripped away its enhancements, but her resistance to poison and pain, stealth training, and magical daggers remain useful when Ella recruits her.
Gideon (Supporting)

An archwizard leading the royal search party into the Wildlands. He accepts responsibility when the treaty-breaking expedition is captured and enslaved, but his magic is cut off by a collar and his group is divided among hostile owners.

A fighter and ally in Gideon's royal search party. The Wildlands ambush leaves him captured and enslaved with the other members of the group.
Gideon's daughter (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Gideon's young adept daughter and a member of the royal search. Captivity separates her from her allies and exposes her to severe abuse, while Ember secretly uses Fae magic to heal and protect her.
The elven assassin (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
A magical tracker allied with Gideon and Ember. Enslaved beside Ember, she recognizes Ember's Fae nature and helps conceal the use of healing magic from their captors. Her own name is not established when she enters the story.
The princess (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
King Bael's runaway daughter, captured after her flight brings the royal search party across the Wildlands border. She says she fled to protect her lady-in-waiting from execution and hoped to prove herself by delivering Kael to the king.

A wizard who escaped captivity alongside Kael and helped sail their stolen ship into the Sea of Storms. The wreck separates him from Kael and Kia, leaving his survival and location unknown as the pair continue inland.
The older wizard (Supporting)

An older wizard who escapes captivity with Kael, Kia, and Galen. He shares responsibility for sailing their stolen ship into the Sea of Storms, then becomes separated from the group when the vessel is wrecked.
Kalmar (Supporting)

The older wizard from Kael's escape group is identified as Kalmar. Before the wreck, Kael sustained Kalmar's magic through the bond tied to his suppressing collar.

The necromancer rulers (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 11
A ruling couple from a southern magical kingdom whose hidden agent tracks Gideon's party. The spy reports a suspected young Fae among the fugitives, prompting the rulers to approach while Ember remains critically injured.

A reclusive alchemist near the Twin Cities with a reputation for killing a Broken Blade assassin. His defenses have deterred earlier intruders, leading Dominic and his first mate to investigate him as a dangerous and potentially valuable outsider.

The masked dead-wizard leader (Antagonist)

A concealed figure awaiting Kael in the Dwarven Mountains. The Dead Sisters transport their collared captive toward him after Kia's betrayal, linking this leader to a plan that treats Kael's death-wizard nature as something to exploit.
The coven leader (Antagonist)
