In short (whole book)

Kael survives a wreck and heads toward the Dwarven Mountains, unaware that Ember and Max are alive and following with Gideon. His companion Kia eventually reveals herself as a Dead Sister and delivers him into a plot involving an ancient seal. Cassie helps him escape and accompanies him into a ruined dwarven city, where an ancient adversary traps him on a seal that requires his blood. Gideon secretly separates Kael from his defenders, and a Broken Blade assassin cuts Kael's throat. Kael dies beyond recovery, his blood opens the seal, and ancient enemies return. Ember, Max, Cassie, the elven assassin, and the necromancer rulers escape with Kael's body in an unstable realm-jump. Gideon's covert party becomes dragonkin prisoners. Elsewhere, Ella dies fighting a released ancient, Dominic and Eamon build cannon warships for the ancients, the Wildlands prepare to invade, the princess remains captive at Arkham Zul, and King Bael faces a succession crisis.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Kael was separated from his wife Ember and his close friend Max during a dimensional crossing. Although Gideon's daughter tried to save them, Kael came to believe both had died. His emerging death-wizard powers made him a target, and a prolonged imprisonment left him physically injured and deeply wary of those pursuing him. Gideon, an archwizard tied to the royal hunt, continued to regard Kael's magic as dangerous. Kael escaped the underground prison with the healer Kia, the wizard Galen, and an older wizard. They took a stolen ship in search of safety and answers, but Kael remained burdened by the people he believed he had lost and by powers he did not fully understand. Gideon, Kassik, and their allies were still trying to locate him, while the dimensional crossing had scattered people from Earth across an unfamiliar and divided world.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Kael survives a shipwreck after Ember reaches him through a dream-walk and shows that she and Max are alive in the Wildlands. Gideon's royal search party has already crossed the treaty border, been captured, and been split through slave auctions. Enemy agents take Gideon, his daughter, Kassik, and Max, while Ember and the elven assassin remain with a tribe. Kael and Kia discover Gideon under torture. Kael frees him, learns that an adversary is seeking an ancient dwarven weapon, and chooses the Dwarven Mountains as his next destination. Gideon falsely tells him that Ember and Max died during the crossing. After removing the captives' collars, Kael leaves Gideon's party behind and travels north with Kia. At another tribal camp, Kael and Kia overthrow the fighters and free the enslaved people. Kia saves a critically injured Ember, but Kael never learns that his wife is among those he has rescued. He rides onward still believing Ember and Max are dead, while Ember and the elven assassin are left with a chance to follow.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Kael and Kia reach a Free Lands city threatened by Dominic's pirate flotilla. They learn that Dominic is searching for his abducted daughter and offer to recover her before his deadline. By posing as buyers, they find the girl inside a slaveholder's operation and expose Dominic's second mate as part of the abduction. Dominic receives his daughter safely and binds himself to Kael as an ally. The slaveholder's men then ambush Kael with a charm that suppresses his senses and magic. A southern necromancer ruler intervenes, and Kael survives by accepting demonic aid before an ancient potion and augmented healing repair his mortal injuries. City guards raid the holding cells, free Kia, and arrest the slaveholder and Dahlia. Meanwhile, Gideon admits that he lied to Kael about Ember and Max. His party escapes the Wildlands tribe with them, but Ember remains badly injured and comes under secret observation by agents of the necromancer rulers. Once Kael recovers, Dominic sails away, and Kael and Kia leave the city with supplies. Kael can sense the young Fae sought by the necromancers moving nearby, without realizing that the person is Ember.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

The local master wizard investigates the slave ring, but its imprisoned leader is poisoned before revealing everything. His final disclosure connects the wizard's missing beloved to Ella and to an Elder Bloodline. Elsewhere, the orphan Cassie survives a northern raid that kills her guardians, Cairo saves the condemned Alec from an arena execution, and King Bael places a large reward on Kael's capture or death. Dominic reaches the Twin Cities and begins searching for Eamon, a feared alchemist. The missing princess remains enslaved in the Wildlands and joins other captives in an uncertain escape alliance. Gideon's party follows Kael north and stops in the city he saved. The master wizard refuses to honor Bael's order and tells Ember that Kael travels with a woman he calls his wife. Ember remains determined to reach him, while Gideon's intentions continue to divide the group. Ember later reveals her Fae nature to cure a child's deadly inherited illness. The healing leaves her severely depleted and exposes her identity to the necromancer rulers' spy. The distant couple decides to pursue both Ember and Kael as Gideon's party resumes its mountain journey.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Kael and Kia find Cassie's town under northern occupation. They rescue Cassie, arm the prisoners, and help Cornelius lead a revolt. Kael is gravely wounded fighting the raider shamans, while Kia secretly uses witch magic and Cassie discovers her own healing ability. The town evacuates after its liberation. Cassie completes a magical bond and initially stays with Cornelius as Kael and Kia continue north. Eamon captures Dominic, his first mate, and Cormac with explosives and reveals that he is an engineer from another world. A werewolf attack forces Eamon and Dominic into a blood oath. Eamon will share gunpowder and cannon knowledge while Dominic protects him. A masked figure offers docks and dwarven forges for the proposed warship refits, and Ella begins hunting the group to prevent Eamon's knowledge from transforming warfare. Cairo secures two thousand gladiators for his city's defense after surviving an assassination attempt. Gideon receives a prophetic warning that his meeting with Kael in dwarven ruins could cause catastrophe. He promises to speak before attacking, though Ember and Max remain wary. Gideon's party reaches the liberated town and finds Cassie missing from the refugees. Three necromancers watch from a distance, while a large pirate pursuit forms behind Dominic and Eamon.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Cassie leaves the refugees to warn Kael, but Kia betrays him first. She reveals that she is a Dead Sister, collars him, and takes him toward her coven and a masked controller. The coven plans to coerce Kael, threaten Ember's soul, and exploit his death-wizard bloodline. Under extreme pressure, an altered state seizes Kael. He breaks free and massacres the camp, later awakening with no memory of what he did. Cassie finds Kael and keeps him alive until an elven healer gives them shelter. An assassin under contract is directed to wait for Kael at the old dwarven city. Kia survives her wounds and approaches Gideon's party under the false appearance of an earth-goddess priestess. She blames Kael and Cassie for the massacre, but the elven assassin detects contradictions in the magical evidence. When scavenger creatures attack, Kassik is poisoned. Ember transfers the poison into herself to save him, accepting an injury expected to kill her within days. Kia's new disguise places her beside the unconscious Ember, and Gideon's group still does not know that the apparent priestess is the same woman who betrayed Kael.

Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)

Kael and Cassie reach the ruined dwarven city while Gideon's group follows. The necromancer queen supplies preserved higher-brethren blood that saves Ember from the poison. Inside the ruins, an ancient pursuer tricks Kael into killing a possessed young woman, then immobilizes him on a seal said to require his blood. Gideon secretly drugs Ember, Max, Kael's birth mother, and the elven assassin, then advances with Kassik, his daughter, and Kia. An assassin reaches the chamber and cuts Kael's throat under a contract attributed to the king and the Broken Blades. The Fae matriarch cannot restore him. The dragonkin queen takes Gideon's party prisoner and removes them as hostile nullification forces approach. Ember's group finds Kael, and a necromancer confirms that his spirit has passed beyond recovery. They flee with his body after the elven assassin destroys the enemy amulets, but Cassie enters the realm-jump late and destabilizes it. Kael's blood fractures the seal, opens a rift, and releases an ancient enemy, with five seals remaining. Ella dies confronting a released ancient and transfers her power to her apprentice, who leaves with Desiree.

Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)

Kael remains dead, and Ember's unstable realm-jump has carried his body and her companions away with their exact destination and condition unresolved. Gideon, Kassik, Gideon's daughter, and Kia remain in dragonkin custody. The broken seal has opened a rift for the ancients, and five other seals still hold. The wider conflicts now converge. Galen returns to Corinth to warn that the Wildlands tribes have declared war over the broken treaty and are preparing to invade. At Arkham Zul, Dominic and Eamon convert seven ships into cannon warships under an agreement with an ancient commander. The ancients intend to use this growing fleet against their enemies and eventually return to their old kingdom. King Bael's daughter remains captive there with her lady-in-waiting and a vampire prisoner, and she refuses freedom in exchange for service to Dominic. At court, a duchess challenges Bael's right to rule while his heir is missing. The legal guardians of the throne uphold him because the princess is not confirmed dead, but nobles have begun mobilizing. Bael retains the crown and refuses immediate assassinations, leaving the kingdom exposed to an approaching Wildlands war, ancient expansion, and a developing succession crisis.

How does it end? (ending)

Kael is dead. A necromancer confirms that his spirit has passed beyond recovery after an assassin cuts his throat on the animus seal. His blood fractures the barrier, opens a rift, and releases an ancient enemy, with five seals still intact. Ember carries Kael's body into a realm-jump with Max, Cassie, the elven assassin, and the necromancer rulers. Cassie's late entry destabilizes the spell, and Ember loses consciousness, leaving the group's destination and condition uncertain. The dragonkin queen has taken Gideon, Kassik, Gideon's daughter, and Kia prisoner after their covert approach left Kael undefended. Ella is killed while confronting a released ancient, and her power passes to her apprentice, who leaves with Desiree. Dominic and Eamon are converting seven ships into cannon warships under an ancient commander's patronage. Galen returns to Corinth with warning of a coming Wildlands invasion. King Bael remains on the throne, but his daughter is still captive at Arkham Zul and nobles are mobilizing around a succession challenge.
