Lucky and Cage are held by a crime financier who wants Lucky for a secret recovery operation. Jason Burke and Combat Unit 701 trace the financier's money and infiltrate his hired force, while the rest of Omega Force loses its Satora base and follows aboard the Phoenix. Lucky secures his friends' release by remaining behind, but the reunited crew discovers that the financier is an impostor seeking five syndicate founders' descendants from an ancient fortress. Omega Force stops their extraction, kills the unstable prototype synth, and sends a surviving founder's descendant to Esquarian intelligence. The impostor escapes but loses remote control over his coerced crew and is exposed to rival syndicates and mercenary guilds. Cage disrupts the crew's explosive controls, though their safe evacuation remains unconfirmed. Crusher's death as Felex is staged so he can live under his chosen identity. The displaced crew stays together and accepts Esquarian support.

Previously: Jason Burke leads Omega Force, whose established crew includes Lucky, Cage, Crusher, Doc, and Twingo. Lucky is an Omega Force battle synth, and Cage is the team's network specialist. Crusher is an Omega Force combatant. Doc is the crew's medic and researcher, while Twingo is its engineer. The team protects the Archive alongside other battle synths and has an existing relationship with Esquarian intelligence minister Saditava Mok. Crisstof Dalton remains a political adversary in a frontier where regional authority is weakening. Omega Force begins this volume with a base on Satora and a fleet of operational assets.

Lucky and Cage are prisoners aboard their captor's ship. The shipowner had hoped to recover second-generation battle-synth technology through Lucky's former mimic system, but that hardware is gone. He therefore keeps Cage as leverage and prepares another assignment for Lucky. Jason Burke and Combat Unit 701 search for them without alerting the captor, following information and financial intermediaries toward the shipowner's hidden operation. Elsewhere, Doc treats Crusher after a rejuvenation procedure causes dangerous aggression and discovers a concealed genetic origin for the Galvetic warrior caste. Mazer Reddix and Morakar Reddix must decide whether to protect Crusher or obey Galvetic obligations. The crisis widens when Satoran authorities seize Omega Force's base, accounts, and equipment. Twingo purges operational systems and joins Doc in beginning an emergency evacuation of the available ships, personnel, and Archive. Omega Force is now dispersed, short of resources, and without a secure home, while Jason's financial trail leads toward a core-world bank.

Cage pretends to remain ill while probing the captor's network, and Lucky discovers that some of the ship's crew are coerced workers. Jason and 701 use a civilian engineer and forged credentials to plant tracking software in a bank. The resulting trail points to an anonymous mercenary force being assembled through shell accounts. Jason infiltrates a hostile guildmaster's communications to find the recruitment channel. The financier tells Lucky that the mission is intended to recover captive family members, though the original plan depended on Seven's lost mimic ability. Meanwhile, Mazer and Morakar agree that Crusher can survive only if Felex is declared dead, a choice that will cost Crusher his title, property, and former life. The Phoenix and the ship carrying the Archive escape Satora separately, leaving the displaced crews without a permanent destination. By the time Jason narrows the search to several brokered contracts, he and 701 decide their best route to Lucky is to join the financier's force as mercenaries.

Lucky recognizes Jason and 701 among the recruits, admits them to the force, and hides their identities from the financier. Jason operates under the name David Byrne and becomes an informal leader during a lethal survival test. The financier's unstable prototype synth pushes the exercise toward violence, and the financier's interference confirms that the promised rewards may be bait. Doc, Twingo, Crusher, Mazer, and Morakar follow the recruitment trail aboard the repaired Phoenix. Crusher proves that his restored strength has not destroyed his self-control, and the Reddix brothers agree to protect his secret despite the danger to themselves. After Jason and 701 survive an armed attack planted in the test, the recruits are collected for the real operation. The unstable prototype then kills eleven protesting mercenaries. 701 recognizes it as an early weapon believed destroyed after a civilian massacre. The financier removes it from the contractors and assigns Lucky, Jason, and 701 to abduct a civilian without harming her, using the captive as leverage for the larger recovery mission.

Doc's group infers that the mercenary operation may be a prison break connected to a syndicate conflict, and Cage sends a concealed signal that the Phoenix cannot safely decode. Lucky selects Jason and 701 to help abduct a young woman while the unstable prototype is imposed on them as an observer. The team reaches her compound through coordinated diversions, and Lucky tranquilizes and protects her. The prototype abandons the plan and kills more than thirty defenders, then later murders the shuttle crew. Local pursuit forces the group through an emergency landing and ground escape before the financier's people recover them. A separate political crisis erupts when Crisstof Dalton is reported assassinated, placing Jason and an associate under additional threat. The financier reveals that the hostage is the daughter of a rival underboss whose information can locate the supposed captive family. Lucky then bargains for Jason, Cage, and 701 to be released on a populated world while he stays to finish the operation. He prevents Jason from refusing, leaving the three free but stranded as he departs with the financier.

The Phoenix accepts limited Esquarian intelligence support while Jason, Cage, and 701 take a syndicate-linked transport to continue their pursuit. An Esquarian asset reveals that the apparent crime-family leader is an impostor using the identity of a man killed in an earlier covert operation. Jason's stolen ship is crippled during escape and crash-lands, but the Phoenix arrives in time to rescue the group. Reunited, Omega Force confirms that its Satora base, homes, funds, and equipment remain seized. Analysis identifies the kidnapped woman and her underboss father. Lucky learns that the underboss and daughter are communicating in code, and that much of the impostor's crew is restrained by explosive implants. Omega Force plants Cage's listening devices on a rival lieutenant and discovers that the active holding site is an ancient fortress. The impostor has no living family, so his claimed rescue story is false. Jason locates the fortress from the intercepted information, and the Phoenix begins a four-day journey to recover Lucky and confront the impostor and his unstable synth.

Esquarian intelligence identifies the fortress prisoners as five founders' descendants whose return could unite the syndicates. Jason accepts a contract to stop them from leaving while still prioritizing Lucky's rescue. Lucky leads the disguised assault but is betrayed when the unstable prototype destroys his troop carrier. He saves surviving mercenaries and helps disable the fortress's aerial defenses, though the assault force suffers heavy losses. The Phoenix arrives as the impostor captures the prisoners and tries to leave Lucky as the scapegoat. Omega Force destroys two escape shuttles, and Lucky drives the prisoners and the prototype back into the fortress. Jason kills two escaping prisoners, while Lucky and 701 destroy the unstable synth. They choose to preserve a surviving founder's descendant for Esquarian custody. Cage sends the coerced ship's officers a method to disable their explosive-control system. The officers restrain their captain and report that the central controller has shut down, but their final evacuation remains uncertain. Mazer and Morakar also stage evidence of Felex's death, allowing Crusher to abandon that public identity.

Omega Force evacuates the fortress and transfers the captured founders' descendant to Esquarian intelligence. The prisoner warns that loyalists and a long-prepared release network remain, but the immediate extraction has failed. The impostor escapes, learns that his ship's coercive control system is offline, and obtains Omega Force's contact details. Jason releases the surviving mercenaries and promises evidence that their contract was issued in bad faith. Lucky decides that Omega Force needs him as it adapts to losing its home, while 701 plans to return to protect the Archive with the other battle synths. Mazer and Morakar depart for their homeworld to report Felex's staged death and preserve Crusher's separation from his former identity. Jason and Cage give syndicate rivals financial and operational evidence linking the impostor to the attack. He remains free and threatens Omega Force, but rival syndicates and mercenary guilds now intend to pursue him. Still deprived of its Satora base and wealth, the entire Phoenix crew chooses to remain together and heads for Esquarian protection, resupply, and refit.

Omega Force stops the fortress extraction. Two of the five founders' descendants are killed, one is delivered alive to Esquarian intelligence, and the unstable prototype synth is destroyed by Lucky and 701. The impostor escapes, acquires Omega Force's contact details, and threatens retaliation, but Jason and Cage give rival syndicates and mercenary interests evidence that turns them against him. Cage disables the remote system controlling the coerced ship crew's explosive implants, although their safe evacuation is not confirmed. Lucky stays with Omega Force, while 701 plans to return to guard the Archive. Crusher gives up the public identity of Felex through a staged death, and Mazer and Morakar return home to preserve the deception. With Satora still holding its base, accounts, and equipment, Omega Force remains united aboard the Phoenix and heads for Esquarian protection, resupply, and refit.
