Defiance of the Fall characters

By TheFirstDefier, JF Brink

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Zac (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A human separated from his companions when Earth enters the multiverse. Zac survives a personalized System lottery against a herald and loses consciousness after the improbable victory.

Stargazer outpost administrator (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

A temporary System guide assigned to Zac's newly activated outpost. She identifies him as a rare defier and explains tutorial placement, cosmic energy, and his unusual position outside normal cultivation.

Ogras (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 24

A Clan Azh'Rezak commander presented by his scouts as the privileged general directing the island invasion. His forces include organized demon soldiers and beast hordes, making him the central figure behind the incursion Zac must overcome.

Rydel (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 36

A well-supplied main-branch heir of Clan Azh'Rezak. Ogras suspects that Rydel was assigned to watch or eliminate him, making the clan's internal rivalry another danger within the invasion.

Hannah (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 44

A missing member of Zac's tutorial group. Zac believes Hannah may have died or may have returned somewhere other than his camp, but he has no confirmation of her fate.

Monkey King (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 46

A lava-veined monkey found meditating beneath an anomalous scarlet tree in a secluded valley. Zac regards the figure as the likely stone-monkey herald.

Cindermane (Antagonist)

Also known as Monkey King

First appears in chapter 47

The Monkey King identified by Eye of Discernment as a level-58 herald. Cindermane wields heat and stone and calls buried stone-monkey forces when Zac threatens the scarlet tree.

Imp herald (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 52

A large, intelligent, four-eyed imp in robes who commands other imps and operates a guarded cauldron. Zac identifies it as the probable fourth herald.

Demon scribe (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 67

A surviving demon civilian whose costly language skill allows communication across races. She had pursued a merchant-oriented path and explains why some failed invaders remained on Earth rather than return to Clan Azh'Rezak.

Karunthel (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 74

A creator golem and foreman of Zac's newly acquired shipyard. Karunthel oversees its permitted work, explains that it is intended for naval exploration, and helps arrange a disguise that presents the extraordinary facility as an ordinary human dock.

Thayer Consortium chairman (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 75

The leader trying to preserve the Thayer Consortium's last licensed branch. Facing the organization's imminent loss, the chairman seeks to establish its headquarters in Zac's settlement despite limited supplies and bargaining power.

Alan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 79

Zac's tutor in the System, cultivation, and the wider multiverse.

Ilvir (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 85

One of four powerful associates revealed as Ogras's hidden retainers rather than ordinary Clan Azh'Rezak troops. Ilvir follows a Strongman path and pursues contrasting insights into Heaviness and Lightness.

Janos (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 85

One of Ogras's four concealed retainers, Janos is a support mage whose illusions can hide people and influence a battlefield. His specialized assistance gives Port Atwood's defenders options beyond direct force.

Namis (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 85

One of Ogras's four hidden retainers and a shadow-using assassin. Namis is introduced among the experienced demon fighters secretly loyal to Ogras and available for the approaching defense of Port Atwood.

Alea (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 85

A poison specialist and one of Ogras's concealed retainers. Alea is a dangerous fighter who shows a personal interest in Zac, which he regards cautiously.

Mackenzie (Supporting)

Also known as Kenzie

First appears in chapter 88

Zac's younger sister, now living in Kingsbury with Lila. Mackenzie recognizes the ladder name Super Brother Man as a signal from her brother and learns that he survived, though neither sibling knows where the other is.

Lila (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 88

Mackenzie's companion and a survivor of the tutorial. Lila lives with her in coercively ruled Kingsbury and accompanies her on an investigation of an expanding undead threat, partly as a way to escape local danger.

Thea Marshall (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 88

A Marshall clan member with a rare class suited to the wilderness. Thea is among Earth's leading ladder rankers and considers taking another quest to improve her position against the people above her.

Billy (Minor)

Also known as Thwonkin' Billy

First appears in chapter 88

A separate ladder-ranked local leader defending Billyville from rat-like monsters emerging through an incursion. Billy's public ranking reflects an independent center of resistance elsewhere on the transformed Earth.

Megan (Minor)

First appears in chapter 97

A castaway from Chicago who was vacationing in Vietnam when the Integration displaced her group. Megan is among twelve low-level survivors who reach Port Atwood after fleeing an island overrun by enlarged rats.

Selas (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 98

The castellan of Winterleaf Village and leader of the party that receives Zac. Selas represents a weak fawn-like settlement seeking outside help and warns that the nearest human community is controlled by a violent warlord.

Roger (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 101

The cultivator ruler of Fort Roger, where armed men, vehicles, and fuel are kept under his control. He is implicated in the torture and execution of a couple who tried to remove their daughter from the settlement.

Emily (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 102

A teenage survivor of Fort Roger whose parents were executed on Roger's orders. Too young to enter the System, Emily is determined to gain power and chooses to travel with Zac after he recovers her parents' bodies for burial.

Joanna (Minor)

First appears in chapter 102

Emily's older sister, a cultivator who vanished from the family home during the Integration. Her location remains unknown when Emily joins Zac.

Oscar (Minor)

First appears in chapter 102

Emily's older brother, a cultivator who vanished from the family home during the Integration. His location remains unknown when Emily joins Zac.

Sap Trang (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 104

The spokesman for older fishing-village arrivals at Port Atwood. Sap Trang offers his group's maritime experience, willingness to cultivate, and productive labor in exchange for resources and a place in the new settlement.

Demon pyromancer (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 107

A demon fire specialist whose spreading flames are especially effective against the Ein Hive Beasts during Port Atwood’s second horde.

Earth-mage scout (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 108

A demon earth mage selected for the six-person force entering the Hive Queen. The scout uses tremor perception to detect threats within the living structure.

Herod (Supporting)

Also known as Earth-mage scout

First appears in chapter 111

The earth mage who accompanied the strike force into the Hive Queen. Herod is found dead after the hive seals a tunnel and crushes him near the group’s exit.
