Previously, Tala lived among humans as a gated mage and maintained a network of personal and professional ties. Rain and Lynn were among her friends, Holly was an ally in inscription work, and Terry was her magical terror-bird companion. Her siblings and other human contacts also belonged to the life she knew before her separation from them. These relationships, especially her bond with Terry, remain central to what she has lost and hopes to regain.

Tala awakens in Platoiri believing herself Be-thric's human Eskau candidate, but a head injury activates an emergency mental intervention. Alat, a distinct inner collaborator, explains that Tala's original memories were erased and replaced with a captive identity. Alat begins restoring her while they preserve the imposed persona as cover. A collar and embedded materials make direct flight or tampering potentially fatal. Be-thric is competing to become a House of Blood pillar and needs Tala to defeat six rival candidates. Tala concludes that victory offers her best immediate chance of survival because replacing her mind again would cost him too much time. She tests unfamiliar gravity techniques, maintains Be-thric's trust, and enters the selection feast under intense scrutiny. The contest is declared an unrestricted melee ending in death or surrender. On the eve of battle, Alat returns memories previously withheld for focus, including Tala's concern for her friends, siblings, and Terry. Tala accepts that she and Alat now approach their shared memories from distinct perspectives, but their escape must wait until she survives the arena.

Tala wins the seven-candidate melee by combining regeneration, gravity attacks, her soulbound equipment, and an exploit in the contest's wording. Thorn surrenders after the other candidates fall, and Be-thric becomes a House of Blood pillar. Tala also keeps a trapped fount-orb, which she names Rob and later gives to Thron for purification. Tala leads a raid against a House of the Rising Sun candidate, killing him after a destructive fight and securing his weapon for Be-thric's armor. She then undergoes gatebreaking, enduring weeks of soul-level distress to increase her magical flow by more than threefold. The city lord of Platoiri recognizes Tala as a gated human and tests whether she will kill on command without evidence. She refuses, but later learns how completely his near-Hallowed power surpasses her defenses. Be-thric then sends Tala into a sealed guildhold overrun by forbidden automata. The constructs share observations, repair themselves, cast magic, and rapidly upgrade their armor against her tactics. Tala fights through them with gravity-linked spheres, dissolution, and her void weapon. The final white-metal defender is a constructed consciousness powered by part of a human soul. It tries to negotiate through combat, but Tala destroys its fount and secures the hold. She conceals research, white metal, sealed founts, and the defender's remains inside Kit. Thron identifies its sword as a Black Legion concept weapon and explains that the original fount-powered automata turned on both sides of an old war. Tala secretly lets the inactive defender's body continue growing and gives the concept blade to Thron for training. She also develops compressed-air gravity techniques. A subsequent House of Blood raid takes another rival candidate's weapon without harming the minor house's noncombatants, bringing Be-thric closer to completing his armor.

Tala's collar is adjusted for a temporary journey to Croi. She, Be-thric, Thron, and a House retainer travel by a pocket space attached to a ballista bolt. At the landing, magical beasts attack, including a drake that overwhelms Tala until Be-thric disables its bodily functions through mind magic. In Croi, a senior elven Eskau receives the party and introduces Tala to a preserved fragment of the world that existed before reality was shattered. Tala learns that Zeme is a reconstruction layered over the next world and that a hazardous broken realm lies beyond it. The elven Eskau begins intensive martial instruction. She defeats Tala easily, then limits herself to Tala's power level so that repeated losses can improve Tala's technique. Other experienced Eskau expose further weaknesses in Tala's footing, weapon control, and balance, though she eventually lands a deliberate wound on her main trainer. Tala also proposes ways for Be-thric to obtain the remaining weapons needed for advancement. The council approves his planned venture toward human lands, but only on the condition that he go alone. The ruling removes the route home Tala expected to use.

Back in Platoiri, the city lord refuses to remove her collar and explains that it enforces the House's responsibility for allowing a gated human to advance. Tala begins considering how to become valuable enough that the House would banish rather than execute her. The House of Blood raids the local House of the Rising Sun. Tala breaches its hold, kills resisting defenders, and quietly stores books, magical resources, and restricted advancement material in Kit while the House takes another weapon. The victory makes her celebrated inside the House but pushes the rival branch toward collapse. Soon afterward, the city lord announces a paid, sanctioned breach against the House of Blood and gives its defenders one hour to prepare. Noncombatants withdraw, Tala moves Kit, and the attacking force enters as the House begins a fighting retreat.

During the sanctioned assault, Tala's siege attacks inflict heavy casualties before enemy dimensional defenses force close combat. She kills specialists sent to counter her, then learns Be-thric is missing. Tala finds him battling leaders and mercenaries serving two rival houses, the Rising Sun and the Acidic Tide. After helping destroy the attackers, she sees that Be-thric may recover from his wounds and deliberately uses dissolution to ensure his death. His final act triggers her collar. The collar releases creatures that consume the special metals in Tala's body. The iron creature destroys her inscriptions, silences Alat, and leaves Tala holding it at bay with a weak Archon Star. The House treats her as already dead and sends her into the broken realm with Thron, who chooses exile. There, Tala's void sight reveals reality threads and openings connected to Zeme. She tells Thron that Be-thric abducted and rewrote her, then buys his aid with a concept weapon and advancement book. They escape through a reality nodule. Tala uses Kit's reinscriber to restore her enhancements and Alat. A reality eagle seals the open breach and attacks Tala, but Thron destroys it with the concept weapon. They part amicably, and Tala heads toward human lands with Terry.

Tala runs northeast from Platoiri while Alat helps maintain the forming Archon Star. She reasons that human teleportation may remove the iron creature, now identified as a Doskanok, because it is not bound to her soul. A group equipped with unusual artifacts tries to stop her. Their power-dispersal device forces the Archon Star to finish, but the Doskanok prevents its iron from leaving Tala's hand and cannot consume it. The result is a new stalemate rather than her expected death. Tala visits a hidden mobile settlement whose Hallowed leader confirms that the Doskanok is probably a conceptual living curse. He agrees teleportation might expel it, but warns that it could instead accept a soul bond. Tala leaves without a cure and experiments with limited conceptual communication and gifts of iron. She then crosses the Leshkin Forest alone. Consuming the forest creatures' animating power strengthens her void equipment but clouds her judgment. At the far edge, two powerful Leshkin demand the stolen power back. Tala returns it and is allowed to leave, though they mark her for a future war. Archive access returns, and she begins sending information to human allies.

Tala has escaped Be-thric, the House of Blood, the broken realm, and the Leshkin Forest. She is still carrying the Doskanok in her left hand, where it remains locked against her completed Archon Star, but her inscriptions and Alat are restored. Terry and Kit remain with her, including the dangerous research and inactive automaton concealed within the sanctum. Thron has departed for his homeland with the concept weapon and advancement book he earned by helping her escape. Behind them, House of Blood retaliation continues in Platoiri. As Tala approaches human territory, she reopens direct Archive contact. Holly receives a memory of the House's re-inscription technology, Rain learns that Tala is alive and nearing a city, and Lynn receives both the news and Tala's apology over unpaid rent. Boma agrees to discuss the artificial sun, Q transfers Tala's share of their growing comb venture, and Ingrid receives Tala's full memory record from the arcane lands with authority to share useful book information. Grediv agrees to meet her at the gate. The book ends with Tala about two hours from the human city, returning with new power, extensive knowledge, and several unresolved dangers.

Travelling north with Terry and Kit, Tala finds that a completed Archon Star can hold the Doskanok in a continuing stalemate, though the creature remains lodged in her left hand. She crosses the Leshkin Forest, returns the power she absorbed there, and receives a warning that she will be hunted in a future war. At the close, Tala has restored Archive contact and distributed arcane knowledge to her human allies. Holly, Rain, Lynn, Boma, Q, Ingrid, and Grediv know of her return or receive her messages, and Tala is roughly two hours from a human city. House of Blood retaliation, the regrowing automaton hidden in Kit, the Doskanok, and the larger instability of Zeme remain unresolved.
