Felix Nevarre fortifies Nagast, gains Henaari allegiance, and learns that nine Unbound were summoned as possible weapons against the Ruin. When Zara locates another Earth-born Unbound in the Scorched Expanse, Felix leads a mixed rescue force through an ancient shadow gate. The expedition wins the allegiance of a submerged naga temple, crosses the desert, survives curse-driven undead, and enters a city whose rulers are sacrificing residents to sustain the Highest Flame. Felix finds the young Minotaur while his allies free prisoners and revolt against the council. In the royal tomb, Pathless paladins dismantle a primordial prison to seize its power. Felix removes the creature's divine flesh curse, kills Haim, and redirects its power to his allies. Atar contains the Highest Flame and destroys the paladin relay ships. Felix then kills the fire Grandmaster in an authority duel and claims the territory, but his altered crystal-working floods the desert. Pit evolves into a speaking Primordial Stormwing and saves the unconscious Felix, who ends the book aboard a rescuing bone ship and in urgent need of treatment.

Felix awakens in the former Archon's temple as the new authority-holder of Nagast. He advances several major skills, completes his spirit tempering, and receives the means to establish the temple as a stronghold. When freed frost giants demand lethal combat as recompense, Felix defeats their champions without combat skills. They swear service, and he grants their people temporary sanctuary despite Evie's distrust. Felix installs crafting facilities and learns that his title, Autark of Nagast, carries responsibility for the territory's people and defenses. The protective enclosure is expensive to maintain, outside powers are already testing it, and the Hierocracy may treat his claim as an act of war. Zara secures transport toward Nagast while the enclosure creates a crisis elsewhere. Felix then judges the Henaari Matriarch accused of poisoning her predecessor and ordering an attack on him. Rather than execute her, he removes her patron's mark. The patron identifies Felix as Unbound and directs the Henaari to attend him, after which their Synod kneels.

The Henaari formally join Nagast, establish a settlement, and begin scouting. Felix builds major walls and towers, appoints Harn to the forge, Atar V'as to the glyphworks, and himself to the alchemical lab. Harwatch is confirmed as Nagast's vassal, though the enclosure isolates it and complicates supplies and authority. Two weeks of gathering resources and recruiting crafters bring the stronghold close to another rank. Pit trains toward the guardian-beast path while Felix improves his barding. The spirit tree then bears fruit. Felix learns to harvest it with the tree's consent and obtains a large supply that could aid advancement if safely refined. Pit eats one raw fruit and gains strength, but impurities appear in his channels and around his core. The stronghold reaches rank two, opening direct communication with Harwatch. Felix arranges for settlers, volunteers, and supplies to travel from the city, while a new chamber opens beyond the stronghold's seat and seal.

The newly opened chamber contains nine ancient shadow gates, but they are inactive and Karys's damaged memory limits what he can restore. Felix repeatedly fails to refine the spirit fruit or fully cleanse Pit. Reinforcements from Harwatch arrive with Vessilia's guardian, who challenges Felix over her safety. Felix wins the sanctioned duel without killing him, and the guardian later accepts Vessilia's decision to remain. New specialists expand the crafting halls while Zara trains Evie and Atar in harmonic talents. Confronted over her secret interventions, Zara reveals that she belongs to an order seeking to preserve the world. The Hierocracy foresaw the Ruin and attempted to summon nine Unbound as controlled defenders. Zara's order disrupted the summoning so the Unbound would scatter rather than fall immediately under Hierocracy control. Felix's dreams connect him to the others. With Zara's ritual, he reaches a wounded Earth-born Unbound in a minotaur body, fleeing paladins in the Scorched Expanse with a body-hopping necromantic companion. Felix commits to a rescue using the temple's shadow gates.

Felix's group prepares a concealed rescue expedition toward the Scorched Expanse. Atar, Alistair, and other crafters build a portable ward for liminal travel, while Evie and Harn select fighters. The force includes Legion members, Henaari, frost giants, and Felix's close companions. Felix and an alchemist finally cleanse Pit and refine spirit fruit into advancement drafts. Before leaving, Felix appoints Karys Chancellor of Nagast and entrusts him with the stronghold. Felix activates an ancient shadow gate by sacrificing significance. The crossing becomes a flight through a collapsing void corridor as enormous creatures attack. One frost giant dies, and Felix's use of unshielded power alerts the Whale Maw. The expedition escapes into an inverted, flooded temple in the Grelden Hills, then severs the gate connection on both sides to stop pursuit. Time has moved far more slowly outside the corridor. After the party crosses the flooded entry chamber and disarms a warded door, an unseen naga claimant challenges the intruders from within the submerged ruin.

Naga escorts bring Felix's party before their immensely powerful ruler, who demands proof that Felix is a Nym inheritor. Felix accepts a solitary trial and destroys the necromantic spirit imprisoned in the temple's mana well. The naga submit, the temple joins his territory, and Felix restores enough of its systems to stabilize it without destroying their flooded home. Their ruler asks him to confront an ancient deep-water enemy, but he postpones that obligation until after the rescue. A rebel naga attacks during the party's departure and dies fighting Felix and Pit. On land, Zara confirms that the Unbound summoning was diverted at the cost of a chanter's life. The expedition reaches a damaged hill town where paladins control the pass into the desert and have taken crucial supplies. Felix, Zara, and Vessilia help an overwhelmed healing priory while Harn develops a plan to pass the garrison. The group has secured food, but still needs water and a safe route through the paladin-held fortification.

Felix discovers a dangerous primordial-linked curse at the priory, heals its leader, and destroys victims already transformed into wraiths. The paladins entered the Expanse months earlier, likely hunting Unbound. Felix's company infiltrates their pass fortress inside a tavern convoy, but the ruse fails after the garrison captain cleanses his troops. Felix incapacitates rather than kills the paladins, blocks pursuit with a mountain wall, and crosses into the Expanse with the tavern workers, who can no longer return safely. Atar guides the expedition along hidden mana paths. At an oasis, Felix tries to integrate the Legion, Henaari, and frost giants into mixed squads, but distrust makes them ineffective. Daylight brings waves of powerful monsters. Felix and Pit intervene against the worst threats while Vessilia commands a strong defense, yet the expedition suffers nine deaths since leaving the stronghold. By nightfall the monsters retreat. The company mourns its casualties and resumes travel toward the desert city, still seeking the Minotaur and avoiding the paladins.

At a settlement built inside an immense skeleton, Felix confronts a cursed former shaman and removes the corruption. The restored shaman directs him toward the paladins' quarry and warns that the desert itself is the true beast. Felix advances his mind but creates a dangerous imbalance because his body remains behind. A primordial curse storm turns toward the settlement and deposits an apparently endless undead army. During the defense, Atar and Evie begin unstable advancements. Felix enters Atar's core space, repairs its structure, and helps him form a ring-stage core. He then enters Evie's frozen core, where a guardian shaped from memories of her dead sister is blocking her growth. Felix establishes that the guardian is part of Evie's trauma rather than her sister. Evie rejects its accusation that she caused the death, accepts it as part of herself, and regains authority over her core. The guardian willingly merges with it, allowing Evie to complete a healed Ring-stage core and begin bodily tempering while the undead assault continues outside.

Evie gains Chains of the Protector, but the undead breach the shelter while she tempers. Alistair protects her and the recovering Atar until Felix arrives. Speaking wraiths carry the curse inside and wound Vessilia and others. Felix resists the greater will behind them, destroys the attackers, and extracts the curse from his allies. The company seals the settlement, trains, and recruits its inhabitants into Nagast. Their shaman reveals underground trade tunnels leading toward the city. The expedition enters these latticeways while wounded members ride in wagons. Atar explains that his blessings come through an accord with the city's powerful fire-associated Urge, making Felix's history with Urges dangerous to reveal. A pursuing wraith force follows them underground. Evie accepts help from the frost giants and leads a mixed flank as the undead attack. Atar and Alistair clear a route for the wagons, but the caravan becomes trapped outside a sealed city gate. A faun temple disciple recognizes Atar and accepts his warning. The defenders open the gate while Felix returns to hold the undead horde outside.

Felix survives an attack by a powerful primordial spawn and enters the protected desert city under a diplomatic cover. Temple guards confine the delegation at an estate while Felix secretly removes lingering curse corruption. Zara searches the lower city for her missing chanter contact, and Felix strengthens the skill array within his Bastion of Will. Atar explains the city's competing merchant, council, and religious powers. The delegation plans to warn the council, locate the Minotaur, and hide Felix's Unbound identity. At the council audience, Atar bluntly warns that paladins intend to destroy the city. Felix consumes a concealed truth-compulsion array and presents himself as a seer. The rulers reveal that the Highest Flame is failing and that they are collaborating with paladins. They suppress Felix's group and designate them as ritual fuel, alongside lower-city residents already being taken. Felix breaks the array and frees his companions, but the fire Grandmaster overwhelms them. Badly wounded and separated from his allies, Felix escapes by throwing himself through the city's deadly storm barrier.

Felix survives in the lower chasm because Pit shields him, then follows a harmonic signal to a concealed healer. The healer gives him panacea. A young Minotaur attacks after mistaking Felix for a paladin, but Felix recognizes him as the hunted Earth-born Unbound and stops the fight. The healer reveals herself as a chanter and Zara's sister, then leaves to help recover Felix's captured allies. The Minotaur explains his bond with a legion-like undead companion and how Haim discovered his Unbound nature while searching for a royal tomb. Zara and the defecting temple disciple strike the guarded estate, then move on the council prison. Their force frees Evie, Atar, Alistair, Vessilia, and other captives. Zara remains behind against senior defenders so the prisoners can escape. Felix, meanwhile, agrees to accompany the Minotaur toward the paladin-held tomb beneath the storm. Karys confirms that the site holds a buried royal line. The rescue has succeeded, but Zara's safety and the paladins' purpose remain unknown.

Felix, Pit, the Minotaur, and his undead companion cross the storm and clear undead from the tomb approach. Inside, ancient defenses recognize Felix's primordial connection and allow his group through. The Minotaur raises fallen paladins as reinforcements while they pursue the surviving force into a crystal-filled underground city. Above, Zara rejoins the rescue group, Vessilia reaches Adept Tier, and the allies decide to free thousands still held for sacrifice. They assault the temple as Atar attempts to weaken the Highest Flame with a flask of captured curse corruption. In the tomb, Felix discovers that the paladins are dismantling a primordial prison. Its siphoned power has sustained both the Highest Flame and the city's storm wall. The storm protection fails, exposing the city to undead and an arriving paladin fleet. An impostor posing as Haim reveals the council's promised holy regalia is absent. Below, a paladin leader uses divine regalia and a new array to extract the primordial's essence. Felix and the Minotaur commit to disrupting the operation.

Felix and Pit attack Haim's extraction force, but a divine array protects the paladins. Haim says the Pathless intends to use the primordial against the Ruin and already knows about Felix's territory. Felix breaks the array, but the damaged primordial begins to awaken and curse-driven wraiths enter the chamber. In the temple above, Atar throws the stored curse into the Highest Flame. The paladins' protection weakens, temple leaders burn, and a violent manifestation forms as civilians flee. Pit escapes Felix's protection and enters the primordial, where his first evolution begins and is interrupted. The Minotaur disrupts Haim's array, allowing Felix to reach Pit and identify a divine flesh curse embedded in the primordial. Felix resists a hostile divine vision, holds Pit's failing core in stasis, and tears the curse source free. He filters the primordial's power and shares it with Pit, Atar, Vessilia, Evie, Harn, and the Minotaur. Pit's evolution resumes with altered options. Haim attacks on the Pathless's direct order, and Felix kills him.

The primordial dies, ending the dust storm, but Atar's rejection of the Highest Flame leaves his core collapsing. Felix's redirected power rebuilds it enough for Atar to resist the flame, absorb it, and destroy the paladins' two relay ships. The captive flame remains active within him, and the fire Grandmaster leaves Atar gravely injured before pursuing Felix. Felix is still completing his body tempering while sustaining Pit's unstable evolution. He challenges the Grandmaster's territorial authority, making their duel lethal. The Grandmaster initially dominates, but Felix completes an Adept body and turns the close fight. Felix links the desert's mana crystals and attempts to turn them to water. A vast golden interference spreads the effect across the region, creating a catastrophic flood. Felix kills the Grandmaster and wins the territory, then falls unconscious into the water. Pit completes his evolution as a smaller, faster, speaking Primordial Stormwing and helps pull Felix from drowning with the Minotaur and the undead companion. A bone ship takes them aboard as they seek treatment. Felix is proclaimed ruler of the city territory and adjacent desert, but remains unconscious while the flood remakes the region.

Felix removes the divine flesh curse from the imprisoned primordial, kills Haim, and shares the purified power with Pit and several allies. Atar rejects the Highest Flame's demand for service, absorbs it into his damaged core, and destroys the paladins' relay ships, but ends gravely injured with the flame still pressing him. Felix then challenges the fire Grandmaster for territorial authority. He completes his body tempering, kills the Grandmaster, and wins the claim, but outside interference turns his attempt to transform the desert's mana crystals into a vast flood. Pit completes his evolution as a speaking Primordial Stormwing and helps save the unconscious Felix from drowning. The Minotaur and his undead companion remain with him as a bone ship offers transport toward medical aid. Zara Cyrene, Vessilia Dayne, Evie Aren, Harn, Darius Reed, and Alistair survive the city conflict. Felix is publicly proclaimed ruler of the city territory and adjacent desert while unable to govern either. Nagast remains under Karys Taiv's administration, Harwatch remains its exposed vassal, the Pathless still knows of Felix, and both the flooded city and Atar's captive flame require resolution.
