Tala (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
An Archon moving toward fusion who develops her soul, gravity magic, and combat equipment under Jevin's guidance. After recognizing the reach of his authority over Makinaven, she agrees to keep that discovery confidential.
Jevin (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Tala's Archon adviser, who encourages powerful mages to contribute to humanity. His aura and magical signature appear to extend throughout Makinaven. He agrees to prepare anchor-linked darts for Tala and tells her to keep her inference about his influence private.
Grediv (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Tala's recurring sparring partner and a skilled combatant. His progress toward fusion depends on restructuring an existing soul bond so it does not lead to confusion.
Flow (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Tala's soul-bound weapon and a central part of her combat style. Its unusually deep bond with her gives it considerable magical force during training, although a more skilled sparring partner can still overcome that advantage.
Reeve (Minor)
First appears in chapter 6
An inscribed student whose mage training is incomplete. He has a partial keystone, highly developed illusion magic, and an Archon guardian sworn to his deceased parents who serves as his instructor and chaperone.
Terry (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 7
Tala's powerful creature companion and mount. He accompanies her when she leaves Makinaven with the Caravan Guild, stays near her during the journey, and is capable of moving through dimensional space.
Harvester Guild Archon (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 7
A Harvester Guild Archon traveling west who temporarily joins the caravan. He specializes in controlling kinetic energy through a soul-bound cord woven with muscle fibers.
Senior caravan mage protector (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 9
The caravan's lead defensive mage and an experienced protector. He kills a chitin-armored predator threatening the caravan, then assigns the valuable remains to the guards who assisted him.
Caravan dimensional mage (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 9
A caravan mage specializing in dimensional magic. She advises Tala to separate the interwoven currents in a combined blood Archon Star by redirecting their circulation instead of trying to take direct control.
Culinary Guild cook (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 10
A non-mage Culinary Guild member who works aboard the caravan's chuckwagon. The cook gives Tala a token that lets her notice the wagon's concealed guide inscriptions and grants her limited knowledge of the Guild's hidden practices.
Fungus Archon (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 11
A powerful independent researcher whose managed forest provides the caravan temporary shelter. She studies fungi and magical materials, and immediately notices an unusual partial synchronization between Tala and the senior caravan mage.
Carl (Minor)
First appears in chapter 14
A caravan guard standing watch during a dangerous forest passage. He responds promptly to Tala's warning by waking the camp as an approaching Leshkin force turns a night encounter into an emergency retreat.
Combat mage (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 16
A fellow Archon and capable combat mage who takes part in the caravan's emergency breakout and recovers Leshkin equipment.
Lynn (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 20
Tala's friend and trade contact in Bandfast. Hurt by Tala's unannounced absence, she accepts an apology and renews their friendship. She then identifies several trade opportunities and agrees to arrange the sale of Tala's thundercattle horns.
Kit (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 18
Tala's soul-bound dimensional storage. She uses it to carry inert specimens collected from crystallized wildlife encountered while returning to the caravan.
Aproa (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 21
An air-specialist Archon nearing fusion and the senior caravan mage's great-granddaughter. She uses paired inscribed bar maces and joins Tala's developing program of martial practice with the Bandfast guards.
Adam (Supporting)
Also known as Guardsman Adam
First appears in chapter 21
A skilled Bandfast guard and valued training opponent. He is introduced as a prospective opponent for Aproa when Tala brings the air-specialist Archon to the guard yard for broader martial practice.
Holly (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 22
Tala's inscriber and adviser on safeguards against mental interference. She detects a weak lingering influence and evidence of two erased short-term memories, then proposes protected mind maps linked to an archive bond.
Constructionist master (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 23
A Constructionist Guild master who helps Tala plan a complex soul bond combining garments with Leshkin armor. The master organizes eight material channels so the finished garment can retain useful properties and change shape.
Jean (Supporting)
Also known as Mistress Jean
First appears in chapter 25
A local mage hunter equipped with an iron tube and separately paired, gold-inscribed components. She is introduced among the Archons training with Tala and has specialized tools for confronting mages.
Magnetic-field mage hunter (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 25
A local mage hunter specializing in magnetic control. He brings iron dust into combat, can use magic despite the metal's normal interference, and prepares to disable opponents with varied magical specialties.
Stan (Minor)
First appears in chapter 30
An air manipulator in the Bandfast training group who uses the atmosphere as both a weapon and a defense. He demonstrates an indirect approach to magical combat by defeating a lightning mage through removal of the surrounding oxygen.
Ingrid (Minor)
First appears in chapter 32
An archivist who can query the archive under Tala's permissions and modify the access granted to her. She helps establish what Tala may research about arcanist harvests and their temporary effects on ordinary biological processes.
Constructionist Archon (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 33
A Constructionist Guild specialist trusted with a valuable and unusual alteration. He integrates a revered siphon fascia into Kit, performing the complex merge while Tala supplies the power needed to complete the process.
Simon (Minor)
First appears in chapter 34
A material guide at the Constructionist Guild. When Tala is charged an excessive fee for occupying a merge room, he reduces the bill to the ordinary reservation rate and directs her toward a guild project overseer.
Constructionist Guild Archon (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 37
A Constructionist Guild project overseer who sees commercial potential in Tala's comb. He agrees to explore producing a version that mundane users can operate and begins negotiating a partnership with her.
