On the return caravan to Bandfast, a Leshkin force repeatedly targets her. She draws it away from the wagons and escapes with Terry and a relief force, leaving the caravan alive but the cause of the pursuit unresolved. Back in Bandfast, Holly confirms that Tala has suffered memory erasure and creates an archive-linked mental safeguard. That system exposes a tavern as a siphon, which Lynn helps reveal before the city Archons destroy it. Tala's internal archive aspect, A Lot, then begins recovering painful family memories. A revered siphon fascia transforms Kit into an expanding, adaptive storage domain with emerging autonomy. Tala ends in Bandfast about one quarter Fused, with Terry and her friends beside her, new equipment and business prospects, and unresolved threats involving her memories, the concept arcane, the Leshkin, and Kit's growth.

Previously: Tala is an Archon who uses gravity magic and is working toward fusion. Flow is her soul-bound weapon, Kit is her dimensional storage, and Terry is her powerful creature companion. Holly serves as her inscriber. Tala has worked with the Caravan Guild and Constructionist Guild, traveled through Makinaven and Bandfast, and encountered the Leshkin. She begins this volume continuing her magical development and her work as a caravan protector.

Tala trains in Makinaven under Jevin while continuing the process of fusion. She realizes that Jevin's magical presence underlies the city, and he explains that his Archon Star was made from its city-tree. The bond grants him sweeping authority but has permanently tied him to the place. He asks Tala to keep the matter quiet. Jevin also helps her test anchor-linked darts, confirms that her soul is unusually strong, and identifies an unexplained free soul-tendril. Tala creates a second blood Archon Star and learns to orbit her stars and mirror useful traits into them. The resulting defense can absorb magical attacks, though it is exhausting and initially injures her when she applies the method directly to her body. Before leaving, Tala and her sparring partner discuss personal agency and the burden of protecting others. She thanks Jevin with gifts, then departs Makinaven with the Caravan Guild. A traveling hunter reports that a recent disruption has drawn Leshkin through the nearby woods, and Tala suspects her earlier actions contributed to it.

On the road toward Bandfast, Tala learns to maintain orbiting blood Archon Stars and separate two blood streams that had merged into one star. The second initially appears inverted and cannot recombine with the first. During a supply stop, a fungus Archon examines Tala and the senior caravan mage, finding that their bodies and souls are partly synchronized without either losing individual identity. After contracted, non-invasive measurements, the researcher determines that Tala's unusual star is inside-out rather than truly inverted. A true inverted star could close a mage's gate, but Tala's star has not formed such a bond. The researcher helps her place blood stars into tungsten tools that can serve as mobile defenses without creating new soul bonds. Tala also learns that the Culinary Guild uses conceptual guides to keep outsiders from noticing restricted activity. She leaves the protected forest settlement with a tungsten rod and sphere, but controlling them remains difficult and the origin of the inside-out star is still uncertain.

A large Leshkin force attacks the caravan and repeatedly bypasses other defenders to reach Tala. She refuses to abandon five fallen guards and holds the attackers back until the wounded can be recovered. As the caravan's shield fails, Tala directs a break-out, spends nearly all her prepared gravity workings, and deliberately draws the pursuit away from the wagons. Terry carries her through the forest, and Tala improvises a hybrid spell to destroy a juggernaut, burning away inscription-bearing flesh in the process. The combat mage arrives with mounted guards and helps Tala escape onto the plains. Carl, injured while saving another guard, survives, and the caravan suffers no deaths. On the return route, Tala and the combat mage discover crystallized wildlife and expose a buried site, which they leave for the Archon Council. The caravan leaders conclude that the Leshkin were seeking Tala, though no one knows why. The senior mage begins teaching her the strategic duties of lead protection. After a thundercattle hunt, the caravan reaches Bandfast, where Tala reconciles with Lynn and arranges to sell the horns.

Back in Bandfast, Tala begins joint training with local guards, the combat mage, and Aproa, an air-specialist Archon. Holly then confirms that Tala carries a weak outside influence and has had two short-term memories erased. A concept arcane has taken an interest in her, so Holly designs stronger mental safeguards around a permanent archive connection. Tala also commissions a soul-bound garment made from clothing and Leshkin armor. It can change form and defend her automatically, although mirroring its full sensory field overwhelms her. After training with mage hunters, Tala learns that a siphon is concealed somewhere in the city. She completes the archive bond and gains an internal, conversational interface that begins searching her mind for lost memories. The interface detects active manipulation from a tavern and identifies the building as the siphon. Tala resists and attacks as it drains the occupants. Lynn uses a one-use conceptual working to expose the creature, allowing city Archons to recover the victims and destroy it. Tala and Lynn survive, and the immediate siphon threat ends.

Tala's archive-linked system recovers its first repressed memory, revealing a childhood in which she once felt safe and loved. She names this mental aspect A Lot and continues combat training, learning from Stan that disrupting an opponent's working can be more efficient than contesting control directly. The combat mage asks Tala on a date. She says she is not ready for either a casual or serious relationship, and they agree to remain friends. Tala also researches biological enhancements from arcanist harvests and brings Lynn and the combat mage into confidence about the Culinary Guild issue. As compensation for the destroyed siphon, Tala chooses a revered alteration fascia instead of money. A Constructionist Archon merges it into Kit despite offering to buy it from her. The integration immediately lets Kit create a convincing doorway into its dimensional space. The long-term effects of Kit's new development are not yet known.

Kit reorganizes its interior into an adaptive home with responsive rooms, controlled sound, illusions, and a retractable entrance. Its growing capacity also increases the power it draws from Tala. A Lot continues recovering memories of Tala's family, leaving her emotionally shaken, while Lynn helps her accept that the pain must be faced. Holly determines that Tala's headaches and extreme hunger come from A Lot's mental work and caffeine withdrawal rather than a new attack. Tala tests iron body paint that contains her power more effectively than salve and may accelerate fusion, though it also limits the reach of her aura. She estimates that she is about one quarter Fused. Tala then makes a production agreement with a Constructionist Guild Archon: he will fund a mundane version of her comb, and she will receive a share of income after expenses. Kit ends the book aware that the siphon fascia has made it both a consumer and creator. It can shape its interior, create illusions, alter material within itself, and perceive slightly beyond its exterior. Kit also recognizes Terry as a vastly stronger, death-associated being whose power it cannot consume. Tala remains safely in Bandfast, but Kit's autonomy, the memory intrusion, and the Leshkin interest remain unresolved.

Tala remains in Bandfast, alive and substantially stronger after the caravan's escape from the Leshkin, but only about one quarter of the way to becoming Fused. The disguised siphon is dead and its victims have been recovered. Holly's archive-linked safeguards remain active, while A Lot has begun restoring Tala's painful family memories. The source of the earlier memory alteration and the concept arcane's interest are unresolved. Terry stays with Tala and remains unbonded. Lynn is a trusted friend and collaborator, and the combat mage remains her friend after accepting that she does not want a relationship. Kit has become an expanding, responsive inner domain with increasing autonomy and siphon-like abilities. Tala must continue fusion training, investigate the Leshkin focus and mental interference, manage Kit's development, and prepare for future travel. She also holds a prospective income share from the Constructionist Guild's planned mundane version of her comb.
