In short (whole book)

Ozma's magic record book warns that the Flatheads and Skeezers, two remote peoples of Oz, are about to go to war. She and Dorothy travel north to make peace, but neither Su-dic of the Flatheads nor Queen Coo-ee-oh of the Skeezers will listen. Coo-ee-oh lowers her glass-domed island beneath its lake, trapping Dorothy, Ozma, and the Skeezers; during the struggle she is changed into a diamond swan and can no longer supply the magic that will raise it. The record book alerts the Emerald City, and Glinda leads a rescue. Meanwhile, the fisherman Ervic obtains Red Reera's help in restoring three enchanted fish to their true forms as the Three Adepts at Magic. With the Adepts and the Wizard, Glinda raises the island. Ozma removes the causes of the feud: the Adepts recover their stolen brains and lead the Flatheads, while kindly Lady Aurex becomes ruler of the Skeezers. Peace restored, the travelers return for Ozma's birthday.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Dorothy Gale has left Kansas to live in the marvelous Land of Oz, where her friend Princess Ozma rules from the Emerald City. Oz is home to many strange peoples and talking creatures, and Ozma tries to govern them kindly. Glinda the Good, the powerful Sorceress of the South, watches over the land and advises Ozma. Dorothy's old companions include the Scarecrow and the little Wizard of Oz, now a true student of magic. Their earlier journeys have made them a large, loyal household, ready to help one another whenever trouble reaches even the most distant corner of Oz.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

Ozma consults her magic record book and discovers that the Flatheads and the Skeezers, two peoples in a little-visited northern region of Oz, are preparing for war. Although her advisers could go in her place, Ozma believes a ruler should try to prevent the fighting herself. Dorothy insists on accompanying her. The two friends set out with simple supplies and Ozma's magic tent. Their road carries them through unfamiliar country and meetings with airy beings, but they continue toward the mountain region in good spirits. A magical stairway provides a path up the steep heights and brings them close to the homeland of the Flatheads.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

Dorothy and Ozma find that the Flatheads carry their brains in cans because their heads have no room for them. Their ruler, the Supreme Dictator Su-dic, and his wife Rora possess especially powerful brains that were stolen from three Adepts at Magic. Su-dic rejects Ozma's appeal and remains determined to make war upon the Skeezers. The travelers descend to a beautiful mountain lake, where the Skeezers live on an island protected by a glass dome. Queen Coo-ee-oh boasts that she alone understands the island's magic. She receives Ozma and Dorothy but refuses to make peace. Lady Aurex, a kindly Skeezer whom the queen dislikes, befriends the visitors and helps them understand how harshly Coo-ee-oh rules.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Ozma and Dorothy have crossed the northern mountains to prevent a war, but both Su-dic of the Flatheads and Coo-ee-oh of the Skeezers reject peace. Coo-ee-oh uses her machinery and magic to lower the entire glass-covered island beneath the lake, where the dome keeps the water away and the Skeezers live in a dry, bright chamber. The visitors discover that the queen can sink or raise the island by secret means known only to her. The Flatheads nevertheless bring their attack to the lake, and magic is used on both sides. During the struggle Coo-ee-oh is transformed into a glittering diamond swan. In that shape she cannot explain the spell or machinery needed to lift the island. Dorothy, Ozma, Lady Aurex, and the whole Skeezer community are left trapped beneath the water with no clear way to reach the shore.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Ozma and Dorothy's attempt to end the Flathead-Skeezer quarrel has left them beneath the lake with the Skeezers. Queen Coo-ee-oh, the only person who knows how to raise the glass-domed island, has been changed into a diamond swan. News of the disaster appears in Ozma's magic record book at the Emerald City. The Scarecrow, the Wizard, and Ozma's other counselors study the report and seek help from Glinda. The great Sorceress comes north with companions and magical tools, but even she cannot simply lift the immense island without knowing how Coo-ee-oh's enchantment works. Beneath the dome, Ozma keeps the frightened Skeezers calm and Dorothy explores for any possible aid. Above the lake, Glinda begins a patient investigation. The rescue now depends on learning the lost secret of the island rather than on force alone.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

Ozma and Dorothy remain trapped with the Skeezers on Coo-ee-oh's sunken island, while Glinda and the Emerald City counselors seek the lost means of raising it. Elsewhere, a Skeezer fisherman named Ervic catches three fish that can speak. They tell him they are the Three Adepts at Magic, enchanted and robbed of their powerful brains by Su-dic and Rora. To regain their true forms they need the help of Red Reera, a Yookoohoo famous for transformations. Ervic travels to Reera's home and finds that she is proud, changeable, and unwilling to obey a request merely because it is worthy. Instead of trying to command her, he uses tact and appeals to her delight in displaying her powers. Reera agrees to consider the strange fish, giving the captives their first real chance of becoming Adepts again.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

Dorothy, Ozma, and the Skeezers remain trapped on the sunken island because Coo-ee-oh was turned into a diamond swan before she could raise it. Glinda's rescue party needs more magical knowledge. Red Reera restores Ervic's three enchanted fish to their proper forms as the Adepts at Magic. They recover the use of their knowledge and join the larger effort to save the Skeezers. Glinda, the Wizard, and the Adepts study the sunken island and the enchantment that holds it below the lake. Coo-ee-oh cannot tell them the secret directly, so the rescuers must piece together the needed magic without her cooperation. By combining different kinds of wisdom rather than depending on a single magician, they discover how the island can be brought back to the surface. The way is prepared for Glinda's final attempt while Dorothy and Ozma continue waiting under the dome.

Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)

Glinda and her allies successfully raise the glass-domed island, releasing Ozma, Dorothy, Lady Aurex, and the Skeezers from beneath the lake. Ozma then removes the old causes of war. The Three Adepts regain the powerful brains stolen by Su-dic and Rora and become the new leaders of the Flatheads. The gentle Lady Aurex is chosen to govern the Skeezers instead of Coo-ee-oh, who remains in the form of a diamond swan. With both communities under wiser rule, the Flatheads and Skeezers agree to live peacefully. Ozma and Dorothy return to the Emerald City, where their worried friends welcome them. The story ends with Ozma's birthday and a happy gathering of the companions who helped bring the distant quarrel to a peaceful close.

How does it end? (ending)

Glinda, the Wizard, and the Three Adepts combine their knowledge to raise the glass-domed island from beneath the lake, freeing Dorothy, Ozma, and the Skeezers. Ozma then settles the quarrel without allowing either old ruler to renew it. The stolen brains are returned to the Three Adepts, who become the wiser leaders of the Flatheads. Lady Aurex is chosen to govern the Skeezers in place of the transformed Coo-ee-oh. Both peoples accept peace and better rulers, while Coo-ee-oh remains a diamond swan and no longer holds the island's magic in her keeping. With the remote corner of Oz made peaceful, Dorothy and Ozma return to the Emerald City. Their friends welcome them home, and the adventure closes with Ozma's birthday celebration, joining the rescued travelers and their companions in a cheerful reunion.
