The eighth Completionist Chronicles novel follows Joe as he works to secure a hidden dwarven refuge, the Shoe, from elven forces by recruiting an additional Grandmaster whose presence will keep the settlement's location magically concealed. Joe's recruitment mission through contested territory quickly turns into a running pursuit once elven trackers, including a small strike force with explicit orders to capture or kill him, pick up his trail, forcing him and his companions into escalating combat, near-fatal setbacks, and improvised magical experiments to stay ahead of their hunters. Alongside the immediate danger, Joe juggles building defenses, testing new rituals bound to enchanted orbs, and planning for passage into a still more hostile zone, all while trying to keep his refugees, and his own party, alive.
