In short (whole book)
Joe sets out to recruit another dwarven Grandmaster so Grandma's Shoe can remain hidden while the elves overrun dwarven territory. After surviving pursuit and reaching the high city, he gains Grandmaster Snow's support, reaches master rank in core ritual skills, and helps evacuate the city when an elven siege exposes Daniela's collaboration. Havoc turns the Shoe into a volcanic transport, while Joe builds a bubble route that carries refugees through the inter-zone passage and relocates vital buildings into the giant world. Joe then returns for the captured Jaxon, only to fall into Hair Trigger's trap and expose the refugees' new camp. The elven army's unauthorized portal invasion triggers a lethal interworld penalty that destroys the assault force and fills the elven capital with demons. Daniela helps Joe and Jaxon escape but is left behind. After the numbered chapters, the two return to the refugees, who must now build and defend a Tier 5 city to escape the giant world.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Joe, a human Ritual Architect, became closely aligned with the dwarves and trained under Havoc. His unusual ritual work, settlement building, and guild connections made him important to the survival of people caught in a factional war. Jaxon remained his trusted companion, while Major Cleavage, Daniela, McPoundy, and other dwarven allies formed part of the network around him. Hair Trigger became a personal enemy operating with elven support. As the dwarven position deteriorated, Joe established Grandma's Shoe as a hidden refuge and began preparing for a wider evacuation. The settlement could not remain secure indefinitely, and dwarves who died under elven control risked returning as members of the opposing faction. Joe therefore needed both to protect the refuge and to create a route for survivors to leave the threatened zone. His class, his bond with Havoc, and his ability to create infrastructure quickly placed him at the center of that effort.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
So far this book: Joe stabilizes the failing heat controls in Grandma's Shoe and learns that recruiting another dwarven Grandmaster will strengthen the settlement's concealment. Havoc permits the journey, and Jaxon volunteers to accompany him. Jake arrives to honor his alchemy contract and takes control of the Pyramid of Panacea. Daniela and Major Cleavage join the expedition, with Daniela studying valuable structures and Major Cleavage providing military authority and navigation. In the capital, the group delivers a linked teleportation pad to McPoundy's workshop, creating a possible refugee route. Joe also begins placing hidden shrines to prevent the elven pantheon from monopolizing divine power in the zone. The party must travel overland because wartime restrictions have disabled direct links between major cities. An elven ambush marks Joe and draws Hair Trigger's force to the party. Joe is killed while trying to protect his companions, Major Cleavage escapes toward approaching dwarven soldiers, and the status of Daniela and Jaxon remains uncertain. The hunters now have Joe's trail, and the recruitment mission has become an active pursuit.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Joe recovers from the ambush and expands his ritual-orb toolkit with healing, energy perception, and summoning functions. A former human president warns him that the giant world beyond the inter-zone passage will weaken poorly trained abilities and punish new settlements with escalating monster attacks. Joe therefore needs stronger skills and defensible infrastructure before moving refugees. He resumes the expedition and contracts a life-draining pseudo-lich, though Major Cleavage warns that such summoning is illegal in dwarven settlements. When a large elven force closes in, Joe launches the party in separate experimental travel bubbles. The escape avoids an incoming war spell but leaves everyone trapped in fragile, unguided flight without steering, obstacle avoidance, fresh air, or meaningful protection from damage.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
The party climbs an enchanted mountain path that cannot be bypassed without losing progress. Its trials test persistence and expose travelers to increasingly dangerous threshold monsters. Major Cleavage explains that reaching sage rank requires both Grandmaster ability and one of a very small number of mythical cores, making those cores part of the dwarves' strategic conflict with the elves. Near the summit, Joe detects that elven influence is corrupting ambient mana and undermining the high city's defenses.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
At the summit, Joe finds the bridge into the high city destroyed. He crosses the chasm by following the remaining magical corridor with Omnivolt, then retrieves Jaxon, Daniela, and Major Cleavage in an improvised bubble. Once inside, Major Cleavage's authority and Joe's military rank keep the guards from treating them as enemies. Joe learns that a council of masters governs the city and that reaching it quickly requires a public challenge against one of its members. Joe's first teaching contest is distorted by his rival's crowd-powered speech skill, and Joe loses despite demonstrating mastery of Omnivolt. Grandmaster Snow voids the result and orders a fairer rematch. Joe acquires a Teaching skill, trains one hundred dwarves, wins the second contest, and declines the offered council seat in favor of presenting his plan to the city's leaders. Snow had already spoken with McPoundy and agrees to support Joe once he proves he can reach the city. Her commitment completes his recruitment quest, removing the settlement's location from hostile memories and granting Joe a temporary skill-growth boon. The council then takes him to a hidden legendary ritual hall located beyond the vulnerable surface city. Joe uncovers the hall's true workspace, studies its linked and conditional circles, and receives instruction from Snow in mana manipulation and structural control. He also develops tailored defenses against projectiles and animals. By applying rare advancement rewards, Joe reaches master rank in Ritual Magic and Ritual Circles, gaining the ability to form lower-ranked circles rapidly from a precise mental design.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
Elven forces surround the mountain and erase the protected path by establishing their own shrines. Grandmaster Snow orders the high city evacuated through its limited gateway to Grandma's Shoe. Joe proposes preserving more than the population by adapting a legendary relocation ritual. The city's mages dismantle nonessential buildings to recover the materials he needs, while Snow and the council masters help him complete increasingly demanding circles. The resulting ritual cannot move the legendary hall itself, but it can relocate lesser buildings after being assigned to a sufficiently durable platform. The dwarves preserve the hall's keystone, records, and useful contents before abandoning it. During the evacuation, Snow secretly gives Joe another keystone. Daniela then appears to attack Snow, and disguised elves assault the refugees, leaving the evacuation compromised by apparent betrayal.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
Joe protects the last evacuation queue with improvised barriers, but earth elementals and artillery break through, and Hair Trigger kills him just after he reaches Grandma's Shoe. On returning from respawn, Joe discovers that Grandmaster Snow and the other masters survived. They anticipated a traitor and used a decoy during Daniela's attack. Snow is also revealed as Havoc's former partner and the mother of their daughter. The Shoe is dangerously overcrowded, so Joe restores its cooling and resolves a threat to its water supply. Havoc reveals that the settlement's shell has been transformed into a lava-swimming golem intended to erupt beneath the elven capital. Joe turns the relocation ritual into a building-transfer platform and secures Jake's permission to move the Pyramid of Panacea. Major Cleavage asks him to develop transport and defenses for the refugee crossing. When another dwarven city falls and the inter-zone passage opens at the capital, Havoc launches the Shoe upward. Joe's linked bubble system begins moving nearly one hundred thousand refugees toward the passage, but the elven counterattack causes heavy losses. During Joe's own crossing, those losses remove his Excommunicated title and Dwarven Superiority trait.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
Daniela reaches the new camp in restraints and says Jaxon is being held in an elven re-education center. She explains that prisoners are forced to harm dwarven captives before receiving an irreversible elven-aligned trait. Although Joe recognizes a persistent persuasive effect around her and refuses to let it shape the decision, her information survives questioning. Major Cleavage helps prepare a return route, and Joe enters elven territory alone with an anti-magic ritual and a teleportation pad linked to the guild hall. He infiltrates the camp, strengthens the prisoners with his passive aura, and starts a revolt with a scattering storm ritual. Joe reaches Jaxon and attempts to lead him and apparent dwarven captives out. The captives reveal themselves as disguised elves, and Hair Trigger closes the trap. Joe and Jaxon are captured, while an elf steals the active teleportation pad and discovers its connection to the refugees' camp. The rescue has therefore exposed the settlement to invasion.
Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)
The high cleric maims Joe and Jaxon and brings them to the invasion platform as examples of elven victory. Joe resists an attempt to manipulate him into accepting the theocracy. The portal then opens behind the dwarven perimeter, and roughly twenty thousand elite soldiers cross before the route begins to fail. The invasion violates the rules for nonstandard interworld travel. Soldiers implode after crossing, their resurrection costs multiply, and thousands of small demons are summoned at the departure point in the elven capital. Amid the resulting attack, Joe uses his ritual orbs to reposition himself, remove his restraints, and regenerate his arms. Daniela publicly presents herself as an elven informant, but covertly throws Jaxon within Joe's reach and enables their escape. Joe heals Jaxon, and the two flee across the inter-zone passage while demons overwhelm the capital. Daniela remains behind after asking Joe to return for her. Joe and Jaxon depart for the giant world, leaving the elven invasion destroyed. The broader war, Daniela's survival, and Hair Trigger's status remain unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
The refugees establish a foothold in the giant world after Joe relocates the guild hall, but Jaxon remains a prisoner in elven territory. Joe returns to rescue him and walks into Hair Trigger's prepared trap. The elves capture both men and seize a teleportation pad linked to the refugees' new camp. Their mass invasion through that unauthorized interworld route triggers a catastrophic penalty: the soldiers implode, resurrection becomes far more costly, and thousands of demons appear in the elven capital. Daniela covertly helps Joe heal Jaxon and escape, but she remains behind after asking Joe to return for her. Joe and Jaxon make it back to the dwarven community after the final numbered chapter. Havoc, Major Cleavage, Grandmaster Snow, Jake, and the surviving refugees are safe from the immediate elven assault, though the wider war and Hair Trigger's fate remain unsettled. The giant world is itself a prison. Their route onward now depends on building and defending a Tier 5 city and clearing the cloud layer above it to establish a stable inter-zone connection.
