A human Ritual Architect and Havoc's apprentice who is trying to keep the dwarven population alive. He stabilizes Grandma's Shoe, then prepares to leave with Jaxon and recruit another Grandmaster whose presence can strengthen the refuge's protection.

Appears from the start
Joe's dwarven mentor and an accomplished crafter. He initially refuses to let Joe leave Grandma's Shoe, but supports the recruitment expedition once he understands that another Grandmaster could help conceal the settlement.
Jaxon (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A returning member of Joe's party and a highly unconventional combatant. He volunteers to accompany Joe on the mission to recruit a Grandmaster, committing himself to the dangerous journey beyond Grandma's Shoe.

A human operative retained by the elves after a successful strike mission. He is assigned to stop Joe before the inter-zone passage opens, whether by repeated kills, capture, or preventing the recruitment of a dwarven Grandmaster.
Elven leader's direwolf (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
A metal-toothed tracking and combat beast bonded to the elven leader assigned to hunt Joe. It can maintain Joe's trail for the pursuing force.
Joe's pseudo-lich (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 11
A dangerous pseudo-lich contracted through Joe's summoning ritual. Its bite can drain life, mana, and stamina, leaving Joe responsible for controlling it through the ritual orb that anchors the summon.
Council master (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 21
A dwarven council master selected to oppose Joe in a public test of instruction. Their contest will compare how quickly each can teach a group of volunteers, with a council seat awarded to the winner.
Grandmaster Snow (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 24
The white-haired ruling Grandmaster of the dwarven high city. She overturns a contest whose rules were unfairly shaped against Joe and permits him to address the city's emergency council.
Lord Chekhov (Minor)
First appears in chapter 43
A dwarven organizer who takes charge of the evacuation lines feeding Joe's bubble-transport system. He manages the flow of refugees as the route carries them from the erupting settlement toward the inter-zone passage.
High cleric (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 50
A senior representative of the elven theocracy who controls Joe and Jaxon after their capture. The cleric publicly directs the planned portal assault against the dwarven refuge and presents forced conversion or death as the refugees' only outcomes.
