In short (whole book)
Exiled into a zone divided by war, Joe survives its lethal ambient power, joins the dwarves, and pursues an officer candidacy through ritual engineering. He develops aspect crafting, survives the capital's landfill, helps capture a minor fort, establishes Occultatum in dwarven territory, and gains advanced ritual-orb training. His investigation of supposed spirits uncovers a hidden elven fortress beneath Grandma's Shoe. After escaping its prison, he warns the dwarves and creates the costly Ritual of Argus to counter its illusions. Havoc kills the Lady of Light during the assault, while Joe prevents the fort's volcano from erupting by building Pharaoh's Pyramid of Panaceas. In the epilogue, Joe receives Grandma's Shoe and promotion to Major General, restores Havoc's true daughter Francine, and becomes Havoc's apprentice. The elven war remains active, and the new artifact workshop cannot be claimed until Joe becomes a master alchemist.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Joe enters this volume as an exile from the prior zone, carrying the abilities of a Ritualist, Ritual Architect, and Reductionist into unfamiliar territory. His established connections remain on Midgard, including the Wanderers and his returning party member Jaxon. The exile prevents an immediate return and forces Joe to confront the next zone on its own terms.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
So far this book: The new zone's ambient energy repeatedly kills Joe until he completes an internal mana pattern, breaks the mortal limit, and gains enough physical capacity to function. Hostile recruiters force him to choose between the dwarves and elves, and he joins the dwarves. Captain enrolls him in the Legion and explains that forts control local respawns in a war where native deaths in enemy territory can convert a person into the opposing race. During compulsory training, Joe serves as healer and support for Broski, Dudette, and Diane on a stone lizard hunt. He eventually breaks the training compulsion after nearly a month and discovers Jaxon among another dwarven cohort. What appears to be a fort raid then becomes a lethal officer-selection course.
Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)
Joe survives officer selection by demonstrating his unusual ritual and crafting background. General Mayhem grants him a six-month Ranker quest in which his future rank depends on the benefit he creates for Dwarvenkind. The Candidate title freezes his reputation until final judgment, and Major General Havoc becomes his mentor and liaison. Havoc recognizes the importance of Joe's Ritual Architect and Reductionist paths and begins considering how they might contribute to the war. Early experiments show that Reductionist crafting breaks materials into dangerous aspects that require specialized storage. Joe also discovers that his old supplies have been compressed into a damaged cube. A system tutorial teaches him how to use aspects for alchemy, smithing, enchanting, and rituals, while warning that advanced creations need suitable knowledge and energy from bound cores.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Havoc sends Joe into the toxic landfill beneath the dwarven capital as a survival test and a source of crafting material. Joe develops rituals that clear low-rank refuse, gathers aspects and cores, and discovers both illegally dumped corpses producing undead and a malfunctioning Hidden Guardian deep below the city. His overreach causes a collapse and a fatal encounter, but he completes the test. Havoc then admits that ordinary achievements will not overcome political resistance to Joe's noble ambitions. Joe must create something capable of taking an elven fort. He designs a mana-withering ritual intended to disable both a fort's plant guardian and its spellcasters. When the elves seize a border fort, Havoc mobilizes an immediate counterattack under Joe's candidacy, leaving the untested ritual as the central plan.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
Joe's wall-breaking ritual opens the captured fort, and his mana-withering design weakens its defenders and plant guardian. Havoc completes the conquest, though an important elven rival escapes. Joe then saves an injured cat, is captured by elves, and follows them to a hidden travel shrine. By claiming it for Occultatum, he introduces another divine power into the zone and earns a blood feud with the elves. The fort victory clears his debts and brings him to McPoundy, Havoc's grandmaster-smith brother. Joe proves his Reductionist ability by destroying one of McPoundy's notorious failures, winning the smith's attention and the prospect of a custom weapon. His military success has advanced his candidacy, but Havoc also imposes an obligation concerning the elven mage he believes may be the lost Francine.
Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)
Queen Cleocatra reveals that the cat in Joe's room is ruler of the hidden, neutral Nyanderthals. Her reward includes a sage-ranked weapon template. Meanwhile, a dwarven princess becomes Occultatum's high priestess and helps convert the capital's Grand Temple, making Joe champion of the dominant dwarven religious faction. McPoundy trades advanced instruction for access to Cleocatra's design and produces an expert version: six ritual orbs with control cuffs. Joe can bind abilities or ritual patterns into the orbs, but controlling several at once is difficult and their destruction carries serious penalties. Havoc continues harsh physical training, then orders Joe out to gain a level, kill elves, or return with important intelligence. Minya supplies delayed equipment for that assignment, including protection and support for his exotic new weapon.
Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)
Investigating reports of dangerous air spirits near Grandma's Shoe, Joe enters the Caves of Solitude and improves his methods for storing and transferring aspects. He summons a slag elemental for mobile forge work, then discovers that the supposed spirits are earth elementals being moved by elven summoners. Following their route reveals a major elven fort hidden inside an active volcano near the dwarven capital. Joe infiltrates it and attacks the crystal structures sustaining its camouflage. The Lady of Light captures him and confines him on an island surrounded by magma, where Eli uses suppressing cuffs, repeated deaths, and compulsive speech magic to interrogate him. Uncontained unique aspects kill Eli and restore Joe's magic. Joe escapes through the magma, improvises a heat-draining ritual to tunnel out, and finally reaches a normal respawn point with proof of the concealed invasion force.
Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)
Joe reports the hidden fort and its invasion plan to Occultatum's high priestess, who mobilizes the dwarven oligarchy under his candidate authority. Havoc identifies the fort's illusion structure as the Prismatic Evergreen and commits to an assault. Joe develops reproducible mana batteries, but they cannot be deployed quickly enough for the immediate battle. Instead, he gathers aspects and constructs the Ritual of Argus to counter the elven illusions. The first activation incapacitates its donors. A second attempt uses thousands of Legion volunteers, kills many when unstable circles fail, and grants a limited number of people the Eye of Argus for seven days. Major Infraction holds Joe responsible for the losses but accepts the protection's military value.
Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)
Havoc's micro-golems breach Grandma's Shoe while Joe and Captain Cleavage use Eye of Argus to resist the fort's illusions. Joe finds Jaxon beneath magical rubble, frees and heals him, and gives him the same protection. The three recognize that the apparent dwarven victory remains an illusion and reach the Prismatic Evergreen's control room. Havoc confronts the Lady of Light, whom he calls Francine despite her rejection of that identity. She reveals that destroying the tree will trigger the volcano and redirect the dead into elven respawns. Havoc kills her but is caught in a sensory-deprivation spell. Joe releases him, escapes with Jaxon and Captain Cleavage before Havoc overloads, and organizes the Legion to reduce the fort's materials into construction aspects. Using the enemy commander's master core and an artifact blueprint, Joe builds Pharaoh's Pyramid of Panaceas and stabilizes the volcano. The fort is taken, although Joe cannot claim the new alchemy structure without master rank.
How does it end? (ending)
The dwarves capture Grandma's Shoe after Joe's Ritual of Argus helps key fighters resist the fort's illusions. Havoc kills the Lady of Light, but the collapsing Prismatic Evergreen threatens to trigger the volcano and convert the fallen through an elven respawn point. Joe frees Havoc from a sensory prison, escapes with Jaxon and Captain Cleavage, and then organizes the Legion to construct Pharaoh's Pyramid of Panaceas, stopping the eruption. After the numbered chapters, Joe gains the fort, its Ledger of Souls, a command, land, cleared crimes, and promotion to level-21 Major General. He restores Havoc's daughter Francine through the ledger, proving that she was not the slain elven commander. Havoc can also be restored and accepts Joe as his apprentice. Joe plans to develop his new base while the war continues, but he cannot claim the artifact alchemy structure until he reaches master alchemist rank.
