Rezkin (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The claimant ruler of Kyle and Asshai. He enters Gendishen disguised as a mercenary, hoping to gain recognition for Kyle while keeping his dangerous companions and his estranged former trainer under close watch.

Frisha (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A member of Kyle's refugee leadership and an important figure in Rezkin's plans for the displaced community.

Farson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Rezkin's estranged former trainer, traveling with the Gendishen expedition because Rezkin prefers to keep him under observation. Farson questions Rezkin's motives for ruling and challenges the conflict between his training and his reliance on companions.

Wesson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A mage who knowingly enters a kingdom where magic is forbidden and suspected practitioners are executed. He travels with Rezkin while using an amulet intended to make his power harder for Gendishen's authorities to detect.

Yserria (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A capable swordswoman in Rezkin's landing party. Her knowledge of Lareshi helps the group maintain its mercenary disguise in Gendishen, where a discreet diplomatic mission quickly becomes exposed to wider dangers.

Sergeant Millins (Minor)

Appears from the start

A disciplined soldier accompanying Rezkin's disguised expedition into Gendishen. He is part of the small force balancing a covert political objective against the kingdom's hostility to magic and growing attacks along the route.

Kai (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Rezkin's striker and a trusted adviser on security. He is already part of the close circle protecting Rezkin and the displaced people gathered around Kyle as the struggle with Asshai continues and the refuge seeks firmer defenses.

King Caydean (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The hostile king of Asshai and Rezkin's political rival. His rule remains the central threat behind the displacement of Rezkin's people, the danger facing their refuge, and the unresolved contest over Asshai.

Prince Thresson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A missing prince of Asshai whose unknown whereabouts remain an unresolved part of the royal succession struggle and leave a major branch of the ruling family unaccounted for.

Tieran Nirius (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Rezkin's kinsman and a senior leader at Kyle. He rejects the prospect of becoming king, though the Eastern Mountains warriors still regard him as a possible successor or champion and expect him to train accordingly.

Malcius (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A companion in Rezkin's party whose hostility toward Yserria is openly apparent by the time the group reaches the Gendishen court. Their antagonism complicates an already precarious diplomatic mission.

King of Gendishen (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

The ruler who refuses to recognize Kyle unless Rezkin recovers Gendishen's missing royal sword, a weapon he considers essential to prophecy and his dynasty's legitimacy.

Tamarin Blackwater (Supporting)

Also known as Tam

First appears in chapter 4

Rezkin's apprentice, left working undercover in Uthrell while the main party pursues Gendishen's sword demand. The dangerous method used to accelerate his learning is causing persistent headaches and increasingly frequent nosebleeds.

Lieutenant Drascon (Minor)

First appears in chapter 4

An officer in Kyle's growing army. He helps receive and escort newly arrived Asshaian refugees as the young kingdom expands its defenses, absorbs more displaced people, and organizes military protection for the settlement.

Connovan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A highly dangerous intruder who first presents himself as a Cennarian fisherman. After testing Kyle's defenses through poison and armed attacks, he claims to be the former Res and offers information that challenges Rezkin's understanding of his own identity.

Connovan's veiled companion (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A veiled woman who arrives in Kyle with Connovan and is presented as his companion.

Queen Mother (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

The veiled woman who arrives with Connovan and is confirmed by a blood-based spell to be Rezkin's biological mother. She says she had been told he was stillborn, making her return both personally significant and politically uncertain.

Frisha's protector (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A senior assassin who secretly boards Rezkin's ship and smuggles Frisha aboard. To avoid execution, he swears a life-binding oath that makes him her permanent protector and ties his own survival to hers.

Queen's daughter sought by assassins (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

A queen's daughter who wants to enter an assassin sect, gain its skills, and eventually contend for her mother's throne. The sect demands her delivery, with the queen's approval, as its price for information about the sought sword.

Queen of Lundraresh (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

The ruler of Lundraresh, who refuses to recognize Rezkin's royal claims and announces her intention to claim him. Rezkin needs her cooperation to continue the sword quest and judges that escape would endanger his companions and mission.

Eldest princess of Lundraresh (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

The eldest daughter of Lundraresh's queen, marginalized within her mother's house despite her political importance. Rezkin stops a guard's assault on her and promises to serve as her champion if she is challenged.

Ferelli king's nephew (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

The Ferelli king's nephew and a rival heir. The king makes recognition and the Sword of Eyrie conditional on Rezkin killing him and taking Ferell's throne.

King of Ferell (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

The reigning ruler of Ferell and Rezkin's maternal grandfather. He sometimes appears confused, but deliberately offers recognition and the Sword of Eyrie only if Rezkin kills a rival heir and takes Ferell's throne.

Tam's fellow captive (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

A prisoner chained beside Tam in a slave ship's hold. He does not share Tam's belief that escape or rescue remains possible.

Uthe (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 18

Tam's fellow captive and escape companion on the Isle of Sand. Chained to Tam during their flight from slavers, he suffers serious wounds from attacking creatures and must depend on Tam while they remain lost in hostile territory.

Gendishen master reader (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A master reader who knows Wesson from earlier in his life. She confirms that Rezkin is not a mage, cannot explain the cold quality readers perceive around him, and warns the King of Gendishen against coercing Wesson.
