Rezkin seeks international recognition for Kyle and is sent after the Sword of Eyrie. The mission exposes hidden truths about his birth, ends his betrothal to Frisha, and draws him into a political marriage that provides Lundraresh's forces. In Ferell, his grandfather transfers the crown to him after Rezkin defeats a demonic coup and recovers the sword. Rezkin also acquires Pharrell, while Yserria wins two Lundraresh echelons and becomes unintentionally bound in marriage to Malcius. Tam is abducted and ultimately enslaved at an Isle of Sand quarry with the wounded Uthe. The sword bargain for Kyle ends in betrayal, so Rezkin sets the blade aflame with elementals and publicly claims the kingdom. He learns that an unknown inviter has opened paths for demons and that failure to raise an army for the Fae will bind him to their service. After approving Frisha and Tieran's intended marriage, he turns toward Tam's rescue but is struck unconscious by a rune-engraved dart.

Previously: Rezkin emerged from a life of secret training and became the rival claimant to Asshai, opposing King Caydean while gathering displaced people and loyal companions around him. He established Kyle as a refuge and began acting as its ruler, though the new kingdom still needed recognition and security. His closest circle included Frisha, his intended partner; Tieran Nirius, his kinsman; Kai, his striker and security adviser; and Wesson, a mage who remained personally loyal without swearing fealty. The conflict left Asshai's royal family divided. King Caydean held the throne, Prince Thresson remained missing, and Rezkin's own place in the succession was bound to secrets surrounding his childhood and training. Rezkin also maintained covert identities and networks that many of his companions did not fully understand. As this volume begins, the immediate task is to turn Kyle from a refuge into a recognized kingdom while the struggle for Asshai continues.

Rezkin enters Gendishen disguised as a mercenary to seek recognition for Kyle. The journey reveals a kingdom that executes suspected mages and is also suffering attacks by dangerous creatures. When Wesson uses magic to save Sergeant Millins, Rezkin's group clashes with a Gendishen patrol and becomes a fugitive force. At the capital, Rezkin adopts the Dark Tidings persona and forces an audience. The king refuses recognition unless Rezkin retrieves the missing Sword of Eyrie, a royal blade tied to prophecy. Back in Kyle, Yserria is knighted and the settlement expands its training and defenses. Rezkin also faces attacks inside and beyond the citadel. He captures the intruder, Connovan, who claims to be the former Res, a hidden royal safeguard empowered to act against a dangerous king. Connovan says Rezkin was taken at birth, trained as his successor, and never given a personal name. A blood-based spell confirms that Connovan's veiled companion, the Queen Mother, is Rezkin's biological mother. This makes King Caydean and the missing Prince Thresson his brothers. Rezkin allows both newcomers to remain under guard, but treats Connovan's unproved allegations and the deeper purpose of his training with caution.

Frisha secretly joins Rezkin's voyage and learns that he is also the Raven, with ties to an assassin order. The assassin who smuggled her aboard avoids execution by binding his life to hers as her permanent protector. The revelations destroy what remains of her trust, and she and Rezkin end their betrothal after he admits he cannot offer romantic love. An assassin sect knows where the Sword of Eyrie can be found but demands the daughter of a foreign queen in exchange. Rezkin travels to the matriarchal kingdom and enters its court while Tam is captured elsewhere. Yserria is restored to her maternal house, and Rezkin protects the queen's eldest daughter from an assault. The queen then offers a political marriage: she will release the daughter sought by the assassins and give Rezkin access to her army and navy, while retaining domestic control. Rezkin accepts and is publicly claimed as husband and king, though the marriage still has local requirements and possible magical consequences. A defeated rival champion defects to Rezkin's service. The queen's eldest daughter then claims Wesson as her consort despite his refusal, adding another unresolved obligation to the alliance.

Rezkin delivers the queen's daughter to the masked operatives and learns that the Sword of Eyrie is held by the king of Ferell. His party sails there, but a sea creature under demonic influence attacks. Wesson destroys an enemy ship with uncontrolled destructive magic, and Malcius and Yserria are swept overboard. They survive, only to become trapped in a Lundraresh challenge after a local ruler claims Malcius and Yserria contests the claim. Tam remains missing from Kyle after dangerous accelerated learning damaged his mind. He is eventually shown captive aboard a slave ship, suffering worsening headaches and nosebleeds. Tieran calls on Connovan to find him. Rezkin, meanwhile, reaches Ferell and learns that its king is his maternal grandfather. The king first demands that Rezkin kill a rival heir, then publicly abdicates and names Rezkin his successor. The rival attempts a coup using combat magic and a demonic ritual, but Rezkin kills him before the ritual is completed. The former king then completes a hereditary transfer that gives Rezkin exclusive control of the stronghold's enchantments and its inherited knowledge. Rezkin appoints a regent to govern, descends to an enchanted lake beneath the castle, and finally receives the Sword of Eyrie from a merwoman.

Yserria wins a battlefield challenge and claims two Lundraresh echelons under House Pallas. The ritual later reveals an unintended consequence: she and Malcius are magically married and barred from other unions. Tam and Uthe escape slavers during a creature attack, but foreign soldiers recapture them and send them to an isolated quarry on the Isle of Sand. Tam's untreated mental injury continues to worsen. Rezkin gains another crown when Pharrell's former king abdicates, and an assassin order accepts him as its prophesied leader. The ancient Fae explain that someone using demon-linked power opened paths between realms. Demons require an invitation, the inviter remains unknown, and Rezkin must provide the Fae with an army. The ruler who promised Kyle takes the Sword of Eyrie but breaks the bargain and orders Rezkin's party killed. Rezkin summons fire elementals into the blade, leaves it burning in the throne, and publicly claims Kyle. During the fight, Wesson's magic kills attacking purifiers, and a demon-possessed purifier fatally wounds a master reader before being destroyed. Rezkin reveals that failure in his Fae bargain would bind him to lifelong service. Frisha and Tieran announce their intention to marry, and Rezkin approves before leaving Tieran in charge of the war. He decides to rescue Tam from the quarry, but an unknown attacker strikes him with a rune-engraved dart. Rezkin loses consciousness before the rescue can begin.

Rezkin finishes the sword quest as ruler of Ferell and Pharrell, with the Sword of Eyrie in his possession and access to Lundraresh's military through marriage. When the ruler who promised Kyle refuses to honor the bargain and attacks, Rezkin fills the sword with fire elementals and publicly claims Kyle, but control of the kingdom is not yet secure. Tieran is left to direct the continuing war. The larger conflict now concerns open paths between realms. An unknown host has admitted demons, King Caydean is involved without being confirmed as the source, and other creatures may also cross. Rezkin must protect the refugees from the original voyage until Kyle is secured and provide the Fae with an army, or serve them for life. Frisha and Tieran have Rezkin's approval to court and marry. Yserria controls two echelons, while she and Malcius are trapped in an unintended magical marriage. Connovan remains confined by Kylerum's guardians, while Wesson carries a dead reader's pendant and unfinished warning. Tam and the injured Uthe are enslaved at an Isle of Sand quarry, and Tam's untreated mental injury may be fatal. Rezkin makes the rescue his immediate objective, but an unknown attacker incapacitates him with a rune-marked dart before he can depart.
