Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Rezkin (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The presumed-dead emperor whose sealed tomb at Garton Knoll is found open and empty. Blood, damaged demon-vessel markings, and a raven emblem leave his fate uncertain and make his disappearance a renewed danger to his allies.

Wesson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A powerful battle mage who joins the expedition to inspect Rezkin's tomb. Although a spirit authority believes he was joined to a demon before birth, Wesson remains controlled and compassionate, even sparing an enemy from his former academy.

Tieran Nirius (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Rezkin's cousin and successor, an apprentice life mage, and Frisha's suitor. He is helping manage the political and personal consequences of Rezkin's presumed death while Frisha's unexplained change troubles those around her.

Frisha (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Tieran Nirius's partner, whose behavior has become distant and markedly unlike her former self. The change began before news of Rezkin's death, and Wesson's examinations have not identified a cause.

King Caydean (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The ruler of Asshai, whose relief programs, employment campaign, and compulsory new religion have restored much of his public support. His agents hunt opponents, and his regime is connected to the danger surrounding Garton Knoll.

Kai (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A loyal operative who brings Wesson to Garton Knoll and helps guide the search into Rezkin's sealed tomb. He also protects sensitive knowledge about Rezkin from disclosure within the expedition.

Farson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A senior protector in Rezkin's circle who knows a closely guarded connection between Rezkin and the Raven. At Garton Knoll, he prevents Wesson from sharing that information with the rest of the search party.

Reaylin de Voss (Minor)

Appears from the start

An apprentice healer and trained warrior traveling with the Garton Knoll party. After Wesson defeats a former academy acquaintance among King Caydean's attackers, Reaylin de Voss treats the wounded prisoner.

Rezkin's dragon companion (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A six-month-old dragon bonded to Rezkin through the power he fed her while she was still incubating. She is small enough to conceal, can glide and produce smoke, and is only beginning to develop dependable flight and fire.

Prince Thresson (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

An earth mage imprisoned with Frisha under runes that suppress his power. By secretly altering those runes, he and Frisha open their cell and escape together, after which he commits himself to helping her reach Kyle safely.

Yserria (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

A ruler who leaves for Lon Laresh after repeated attempts on its queen's life. She supports Rezkin's imperial cause and travels with Malcius, whose shared runic mark is treated in other countries as evidence of a marital bond.

Malcius (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

Yserria's protector under a standing order from Rezkin. He insists that only Rezkin can release him from that duty, while the runes he shares with Yserria cause foreign authorities to regard them as consorts.

The regent (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

The acting ruler of a kingdom facing rival claims and unrest after Rezkin's apparent death. He keeps the realm aligned with Rezkin's empire, halts a court dispute in favor of an investigation, and remains alert to assassination and secession.

General Bergman (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 8

A newly installed commander at Fort Krellis who is loyal to King Caydean. Rezkin infiltrates the fort, kills him, leaves the raven emblem, and finds correspondence showing enforcement of the compulsory new religion.

The demon battle mage (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 7

A senior battle mage serving King Caydean who oversees lethal experiments on imprisoned mages. He wields destructive dark power, directs attempts to trap extracted souls in enchanted vessels, and struggles to restrain the demon within him.

General Trivian (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 7

A general serving King Caydean who takes part in lethal experiments on imprisoned mages. He is ordered to capture Yserria alive and seize her crystal, with battle mages and a portal placed at his disposal.

The spirit general (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A wolf-shifter whose bond with Rezkin no longer feels severed after his reported death. She believes that continuing connection may mean he is still alive.

General Ulessa (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 7

A general serving King Caydean who collaborates in lethal experiments on imprisoned mages. She provides enchanted vessels for the attempts to capture extracted souls and supplies intelligence to the operation.

The Cenerian merchant (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A Cenerian trader who transports the spirit general's horse through a guarded checkpoint after her difficult gorge crossing. He persuades her to continue toward Serret in his company.

Regent Collodon (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

The regent previously seen holding his unstable kingdom within Rezkin's empire. Farson reports that Regent Collodon is preparing the Ferelli navy while political and military pressures continue.

The Cenerian stonemason (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

A Cenerian master stonemason who rescues Frisha and Prince Thresson from bandits. He tends the prince's serious injury, gives both fugitives a place to stay in Serret, and considers relocating to Kyle.

Frisha's golem double (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 13

A constructed double made in Frisha's likeness to spy for King Caydean. It attends a mage meeting, obtains details of Kyle's defenses and naval plans, and is caught transmitting the intelligence to contacts in Channeria.

The spirit leader (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A powerful spirit authority charged with overseeing Rezkin's safety. Both Rezkin and the spirit general fear his intervention, making his judgment a central constraint on what they can reveal and how independently they can act.

Connovan (Minor)

First appears in chapter 18

A mage recruited into the Kybane resistance investigation. The spirit general links his power with Wesson's and a former royal battle mage's, creating the combined range of magic needed to breach the restricted library wards.

The former royal battle mage (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 18

A former royal battle mage who joins Wesson's resistance in Kybane, holding that her oath belongs to the rightful king rather than King Caydean. Her magic is combined with Wesson's and Connovan's to bypass the restricted library wards.

The queen's principal consort (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 20

The queen of Lon Laresh's principal consort and the realm's most powerful battle mage. He supports her proposed use of forged correspondence as political pressure mounts around Yserria.

The queen of Lon Laresh (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 20

The ruler of Lon Laresh who summons Yserria to court and demands her support for forged evidence that Rezkin lives. She also orders Yserria to surrender territory and threatens to seize both of Yserria's echelons if she refuses.

Tamarin Blackwater (Supporting)

Also known as Tam

First appears in chapter 19

A missing Gendishen soldier whom Rezkin sets out to find. He vanished from a secured room months earlier, leaving behind a wall altered by Fae-like magic and a beacon stone whose paired signal offers the first practical trail.

Griselda (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 25

A rival claimant to the Lon Laresh throne and an intermediary for King Caydean's effort against Yserria. She has poisoned another contender, employed assassins, and enters the final trial expecting outside help to secure the crown.

Martis (Minor)

Griselda's battle-mage champion in the final succession trial. Their plan assigns him to keep Yserria's more powerful champion occupied while Griselda attacks Yserria directly in the arena.

Thea (Minor)

First appears in chapter 25

A contender in the Lon Laresh succession trials who collapses after drinking poison during the economics trial and later dies. Griselda is identified as the person responsible for poisoning her.
