Six months after Rezkin's reported death, his allies find his tomb empty while he secretly operates as the Raven against King Caydean. Frisha and Prince Thresson escape captivity and expose the golem that had been spying in her place. Wesson frees experimental prisoners and uncovers a program intended to bind souls into vessels. Rezkin prevents the assassination of northern leaders, finds Tam compelled to command a Fae army, and covertly supports Yserria's claim to Lon Laresh. Yserria survives poison, lethal succession trials, and an enemy battle mage to become queen, while Rezkin destroys five other demons attacking the city. He remains publicly dead, leaving Yserria to investigate King Caydean's purpose and Wesson to continue the resistance. Tam is still bound to the Fae. Rezkin departs to pursue both problems with his dragon and the spirit general, who now knows that Rezkin lives, knows he was the Raven, and chooses to protect him despite the spirit leader's threatened judgment.

Previously: Rezkin became an emperor whose alliances and followers opposed King Caydean's rule in Asshai. Tieran Nirius, Rezkin's cousin and successor, helped carry the political burden of that struggle, while Kai, Farson, Wesson, and other loyalists served the imperial cause. Frisha was Tieran's partner, and Prince Thresson had fallen into King Caydean's custody. Yserria held authority in Lon Laresh, with Malcius bound by Rezkin's order to protect her. Rezkin also formed unusual connections beyond ordinary politics: a young dragon was bonded to him, a spirit general shared a powerful link with him, and a spirit leader claimed authority over his safety. The conflict with King Caydean involved demons as well as rival crowns and armies. By the opening of this volume, Rezkin has been reported dead for months. His presumed loss leaves his empire exposed, his allies divided over what comes next, and King Caydean free to strengthen his position while those closest to Rezkin struggle to determine what truly happened.

Six months after Rezkin's burial, Kai brings Wesson to Garton Knoll to verify the death. King Caydean's agents attack the search party, but Wesson defeats them and spares a former academy acquaintance. The tomb remains sealed from outside, yet Rezkin's body is gone. An opened sarcophagus bears a raven emblem, while old blood and damaged demon-vessel markings deepen the uncertainty. Rezkin is secretly alive and working as the Raven. Keeping his death unresolved reduces pressure on his allies and lets him investigate King Caydean covertly. Inside the royal palace, he learns of a city-destroying weapon, agents placed among allied kingdoms, and a planned operation in Lon Laresh. Elsewhere, the real Frisha escapes a rune-suppressed prison with Prince Thresson, proving that the changed woman beside Tieran Nirius cannot be her. Yserria and Malcius depart to help Lon Laresh's threatened queen. Rezkin travels east under a disguise with his young dragon, while the spirit pathmaker who believes him dead follows the Raven's trail. Her search reaches Asshai's capital, where a guildmaster redirects her east with a delivery and the possibility of contacting the Raven.

Wesson infiltrates Kybane's communications system and gives Kyle covert access to relay traffic. He discovers that mages who refuse King Caydean's oath are treated as traitors, and that a demon-bound battle mage is killing prisoners in failed attempts to place their souls into enchanted objects. Rezkin crosses into neighboring territory, where his dragon unexpectedly creates a portal from his memories. He eliminates a spy cell and learns that an absent general and three former dukes face assassination at an upcoming meeting. The spirit general continues pursuing the Raven, arranges a meeting in Serret, and attacks him when he appears, never realizing that the disguised Raven is Rezkin. He escapes without surrendering the secret. Meanwhile, Tieran Nirius receives the Raven's warning that an influential woman is spying in Kyle. He, Kai, and an ally catch the false Frisha transmitting military intelligence and expose her as King Caydean's golem. The real Frisha and Prince Thresson arrive soon afterward and establish the truth of their imprisonment and escape. Their rescuer also reports that King Caydean is building a weapon capable of destroying a city in Kybane, prompting Tieran to organize a response.

Wesson enters the demon battle mage's estate, finds captive mages and records of lethal experiments, and frees six prisoners by copying the estate's demonic signature. His escape is discovered, and poison leaves him helpless during a second attack. Rezkin rescues him from a burning inn and finally confirms that he lives. He explains that an unknown person restored him by joining him to a demon, which he then killed, and that another death would be final. Wesson objects to the political damage caused by the deception but agrees to keep the secret and continue investigating Kybane. Rezkin then infiltrates a conference of a northern general and three rival dukes. He blocks poison and explosives intended to kill them, pressures the divided leaders toward cooperation, and provides a relay connection to Kyle. The dukes and their general begin alliance discussions with Tieran Nirius. In Kybane, Wesson, Farson, Connovan, the spirit general, and other mages form a resistance group. They breach a restricted library and learn that King Caydean's faction is attempting to move a mage's soul into a vessel while retaining control of the living body. The rare crystals connected to Rezkin's allies may be suitable vessels.

The spirit general warns Kai about the soul-vessel danger but conceals her growing belief that Rezkin lives. The spirit leader says that a secretly surviving but unstable Rezkin might have to be killed, confirming why she cannot safely share what she knows. Rezkin turns to the disappearance of Tamarin Blackwater, known as Tam. A strangely altered wall and a paired beacon stone point toward Fae-like magic, and Wesson helps activate the stone's directional pull. At the same time, Yserria faces poison within her household, a stabbing by someone in her own party, and surveillance by a demon-bound battle mage seeking both her and a lifestone. The queen of Lon Laresh also tries to force Yserria to support false evidence that Rezkin lives and surrender part of her territory. Following Tam's beacon, Rezkin fights strange attackers and manifests a powerful but poorly understood form of magic. His dragon is injured, and he heals her through their bond. Rezkin finally reaches a Fae settlement and finds Tam alive, mentally changed, and able to understand the Fae. They have made him general and liaison of their army under a bargain they attribute to Rezkin. The bargain prevents Rezkin from simply taking Tam away.

After the queen of Lon Laresh is assassinated, Rezkin reveals his survival to Yserria and Malcius but requires their silence. To keep the realm within his empire without exposing himself, he asks Yserria to claim both the throne and the late queen's battle-mage consort as her champion. A rival invokes an ancient succession rite, forcing the claimants through lethal public trials before the nobles choose a ruler. Rezkin obtains the questions for the first trial and helps Yserria and Malcius prepare. Their cage repeatedly descends toward magical fire when answers are rejected, but Malcius's defense of the imperial alliance wins support and saves them. Rival claimants continue arranging assassinations. The next trial converts poor trade decisions into poisoned drinks for the claimant, champion, and household volunteers. Yserria's scribe dies after taking one dose. Malcius refuses Yserria's attempt to send him away for his safety, admits that he has long loved her, and learns that she returns his feelings. A failed trade negotiation then leaves Yserria's group facing three more poisoned drinks, while Rezkin's covert efforts have not secured them from the trial or their political enemies.

Rezkin kills assassins pursuing Yserria but misses part of the economics trial. Poison incapacitates Malcius and kills a servant, while another contender, Thea, also collapses and dies. Rezkin secretly supplies a remedy that saves Malcius. Disguised inside Griselda's household, he learns that Griselda poisoned Thea, hired the killers, and expects Martis to occupy Yserria's champion during the final trial. King Caydean originated the contract against Yserria through Griselda. As the final arena contest begins, five demons attack the city and Rezkin leaves to defend civilians. Yserria kills Martis, but Griselda burns her badly. The suspected enemy battle mage then kills Griselda, defeats Yserria's champion, and attacks the palace defenders in demon form. Yserria pretends to surrender and pulls him toward a lava pit. Malcius catches her, while the demon falls and does not return. As the sole surviving claimant, Yserria becomes queen and sends every available guard and mage to protect the city. Rezkin discovers that his black blade and white-light power can destroy demons. With portal assistance from his dragon, he kills all five attackers, ending the assault after extensive civilian and military losses.

After destroying the demons in Lon Laresh, Rezkin uses a portal to reach a healer and survives his wounds. He meets Queen Yserria and Malcius privately, confirms that the enemy battle mage is gone, and refuses to end the public fiction of his death. He believes that King Caydean will place less pressure on the empire while its emperor appears dead. Yserria agrees to investigate the larger purpose behind King Caydean's arrangement of the former queen's assassination. Malcius apologizes for blaming Rezkin for his brother's death, and the two reconcile. Rezkin plans to return to hostile territory, continue tracing King Caydean's weapon and soul-vessel operations, and find a way to release Tam from forced service as the Fae army's general. He then returns to the restored ancient city and seeks the spirit general. Rezkin tells her directly that he survived and that he was the disguised Raven she had pursued. She warns that the spirit leader may kill him if told, but chooses to accompany and protect Rezkin even if that loyalty creates a future conflict. Rezkin accepts her companionship and promises to disclose his full history to her.

Yserria survives the succession trials and becomes Queen of Lon Laresh, with Malcius as her acknowledged consort. The enemy battle mage falls into a lava pit and does not return, and Rezkin kills the other five demons attacking the city, though soldiers and civilians suffer severe losses. Rezkin keeps his survival hidden from the wider world. Yserria agrees to investigate King Caydean's purpose in arranging the former queen's death, while Tieran Nirius continues talks with northern Asshaian leaders and Wesson's Kybane resistance pursues the weapon and soul-vessel programs. Frisha and Prince Thresson are safe in Kyle, but Kyle's defenses were compromised by the golem and Frisha's relationship with Tieran still needs repair. Tam remains compelled to serve as the Fae army's general. Rezkin intends to pursue King Caydean's plans and secure Tam's freedom. After revealing both his survival and his Raven identity to the spirit general, Rezkin gains her as a companion and promises to tell her his full history. The spirit leader remains unaware and may try to kill Rezkin if he learns the truth.
