In short (whole book)
Rezkin leads refugees from King Caydean's rule, wins recognition for the island Kingdom of Kyle, and settles them in the concealed ancient city of Kylerum. The citadel answers his will but also disturbs his judgment until a crystal pendant offers protection. His Raven network frees political prisoners, while new warnings about his training deepen Frisha's doubts. Six residents are taken for a demon ritual. Rezkin's force interrupts it, but two possessed captives die and four survivors remain bound to dangerous crystals. Tieran is injured defeating a possessed healer, and the young swordwoman's crystal passes to a young lord for safekeeping. Demons entered through an invitation from within Kylerum, leaving the inviter unknown. Rezkin delays returning to Asshai and fulfilling his Fae bargain until he can secure Kyle's political standing, sending Tamarin Blackwater to gather intelligence while Caydean's forces remain a threat.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Rezkin gathered companions including Frisha, Tamarin Blackwater, Wesson, Tieran Nirius, and Kai while concealing major parts of his identity and purpose. He became a claimant to Asshai and the leader of people displaced by King Caydean. His relationship with Frisha was expected to lead toward marriage, and Tamarin trained under him. Wesson served as a trusted battle mage, Tieran was both his blood relative and subordinate heir, and Kai acted as a striker and security adviser. Rezkin also developed a covert network under identities known only to selected allies. The group now faces the problem of protecting refugees who cannot safely remain under Caydean's power.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Rezkin leads more than one hundred refugees toward a foreign capital aboard Stargazer, then goes ahead alone to arrange their entry. His admission that he is Dark Tidings and a claimant to the throne has damaged his companions' trust, especially Frisha's. In the forest, a woodland Fae impersonates Wesson and offers a hidden island haven in exchange for an army that can oppose demons. Rezkin accepts the bargain. In the capital he works through several concealed identities, alters the port record, and pressures councillors to support an independent Kingdom of Kyle for the refugees. During a palace infiltration, he discovers a plot to poison the king's sixteen-year-old daughter. He prevents her death and learns that her father intended to blame her foreign betrothed, gaining military leverage for war against Asshai. Rezkin defeats the king and compels him to advance the island grant and send the princess to Dark Tidings. A senior assassin who regards Rezkin as his Order's awaited master offers service. Rezkin then removes the princess from the palace and conceals her in Grabella's brothel as a dismissed servant while the political plan proceeds.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
The Cennarian council refuses the refugees entry but recognizes the disputed island of Kyle as a kingdom under strict conditions. Dark Tidings must take the king's daughter as his ward, accept temple observers, negotiate limited trade, and seek recognition from the other kingdom claiming the island. The king does not realize that Rezkin already has the princess. After Grabella kills her criminal overseer in self-defense, Rezkin places the dead man's enterprises under her control and extends the Raven's protection to the women. The Fae representative clarifies that Rezkin must make the abandoned island safe and eventually raise a force against demons. The Jengri assassin returns, asks to serve, and escorts the disguised princess to Stargazer. A royal guard then arrives with the recognition treaty and a group of deported Asshaians. Rezkin accepts those willing to swear allegiance to Kyle and takes two priests with them. The princess confirms to the guard captain that her father ordered her murder. She boards with the refugees, and Rezkin tells her and the assassin that Rezkin, Dark Tidings, and the Raven are one person. Stargazer leaves for the newly recognized kingdom with its first displaced population aboard.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
While Stargazer sails, the Raven's formerly rival guilds recruit a disfigured nobleman for a planned extraction. Aboard ship, the princess and Tamarin Blackwater become closer, although she wants no immediate marriage. Tam learns her true rank and initially resents the idea that she might be promised to Dark Tidings, but Rezkin states that the treaty creates only a wardship. The ship passes through a fear-inducing ward that only Rezkin can detect and enters a concealed harbor. Beyond monumental doors lies an ancient citadel. Magical force rebounds against Wesson, while Rezkin's touch stops his heart before he forces an entrance and is revived. The structure then responds directly to Rezkin's intent, activating lights and doors that ordinary mages cannot sense. Contact with a small crystal improves his impaired concentration and protects him from the citadel's unnatural calm. The refugees establish quarters inside. Rezkin formally names the hidden capital Kylerum and claims Kyle, intending to negotiate rather than fight the kingdom with a competing claim. A defensive apparition answers his will and explains that seventeen ancient guardians are preserved as linked essences within the citadel. Rezkin commands the collective to separate, proving that Kylerum's systems and protectors recognize his authority.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
Kylerum's guardians act on Rezkin's wishes and even condemn Tieran for striking him during training, although Rezkin orders his release. Exploration reveals a preserved city and palace within a vast enclosed basin. Beyond part of the guardians' reach, Rezkin develops headaches, suspicion, and lapses of judgment. The city also suppresses his readiness, and only his crystal pendant reliably counters the effect. His companions quietly investigate as the refugees settle the city and four residents disappear. A second ship brings supplies, traders, and nearly two hundred more refugees. Among them is Striker Farson, one of Rezkin's former trainers, who comes to protect his niece. Rezkin permits him to stay under guard. Farson says Rezkin was trained under orders and cannot love, worsening Frisha's doubts, while admitting he might use her to control Rezkin. Elsewhere, Benny takes over the Raven network's prison break after a courier fails. Though badly wounded, he frees Count Jebai and other prisoners, and the extraction escapes with losses and captures. Rezkin's council decides it lacks the forces, supplies, intelligence, and allies to retake Asshai. Suspecting that Caydean's troop placement invites invasion, Rezkin prioritizes regional security and sends Tamarin Blackwater to reconnoiter the trade port of the kingdom claiming Kyle.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Kylerum's throne-room guardians force Rezkin through a test that reveals six missing residents bound around a ritual pyre. Wesson identifies the rite as demonic and warns that simply freeing the captives could kill them. The rescuers plan to move the ritual's energy into crystals before cutting the bonds, relying on Rezkin's ability to direct the citadel's crystal system. Meanwhile, Benny and a guildmaster deliver Count Jebai and his wife to General Marcum's northern fortress. Marcum shares their opposition to Caydean but rejects the Raven's endorsement as proof that Dark Tidings should rule. At the ritual site, Rezkin fills four crystals while his force holds off swarming cave creatures. Demons possess the other two captives. Rezkin kills the adult host, and the princess's assassin guard kills the possessed child. At the citadel, a possessed healer lures Tieran, Frisha, Shiela, and the princess underground. A serpent-like tree-being shelters the women and helps Tieran overpower the attacker, though Tieran's arm is left blackened. The four remaining captives are freed, but their lives remain dangerously linked to the crystals. Rezkin entrusts the young swordwoman's crystal to a young lord connected to her through his dead brother. The cave creatures submit and withdraw after the rite ends. The tree-being reveals that someone inside Kylerum invited the demons and renews the demand for sanctuary and an army able to find them. Rezkin postpones that obligation until he can secure Kyle's status, leaving the inviter, the unstable crystal bonds, Caydean, and his own origins unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
Kylerum remains a functioning refuge under Rezkin, whose will controls the ancient citadel and its seventeen guardian essences. A pendant limits the city's harmful influence on him, but the source of that influence and the truth behind his training are unresolved. Frisha remains with him while questioning whether either of them can trust their relationship. Tamarin Blackwater is assigned to reconnoiter the trade port of the kingdom that claims Kyle, and General Marcum shares opposition to Caydean without accepting Dark Tidings as legitimate. The demon rite ends with two captives dead and four rescued. Those survivors remain linked to crystals whose effects are uncertain, and the young swordwoman's crystal is held by a young lord rather than carried by her. Tieran survives with a blackened arm of unknown prognosis. The princess, Shiela, Wesson, Kai, and the other defenders survive the immediate attack. The cave creatures withdraw, but someone within the citadel invited the demons onto the island. Rezkin postpones the promised sanctuary and demon-finding army until Kyle's status is secured, while Caydean, the hidden inviter, further incursions, and Rezkin's origins remain open threats.
