Trey's father, a retired Army colonel whose long physical and cognitive decline has left him unconscious and near death. He becomes the first patient placed in an experimental treatment pod directed by the game company's artificial intelligence.

Colonel Raytak's son and legal guardian, as well as the medical liaison for the company's treatment partnership. He authorizes the experimental pod treatment and its use of AI-directed nanobots, placing his father's survival in the new system's care.

The Caravan Operator (Supporting)

The official responsible for the settlers' caravan, including its route and marching order. He hires additional guards shortly before the journey to Hayden's Knoll begins and must coordinate their presence with Raytak's newly assigned military escort.

The Mercenary Captain (Supporting)

The leader of the caravan's hired guards. He clashes with Raytak and permits lax watchkeeping, making his company an uncertain part of the expedition's defenses. His approach contrasts with the fortified camps and regular watches imposed by Raytak.

The Druid Player (Supporting)

A ten-year-old player travelling with the rangers Drake and Quimby on a starter quest. She meets Raytak while the three accompany the northbound caravan, and her druid abilities give the small player group a different set of skills from his soldiers.

The acting leader of an understrength transition-point squad that has endured hunger, poor equipment, and repeated raids. He comes under Raytak's command when the caravan enters the Hayden's Knoll zone and is ordered to help fortify the position.

The Goblin Chief (Supporting)

A survivor of a destroyed goblin tribe who travels in Phineas's service. Raytak allows him and his son to accompany the caravan after making Phineas responsible for their conduct, placing the pair under clear terms while entering the threatened zone.

The Goblin Chief's Son (Supporting)

The young survivor travelling beside his father under Phineas's protection. He is permitted to join the caravan into the Hayden's Knoll zone after Raytak establishes that Phineas will be personally responsible for both goblins' behavior.

A former miner who survives a cave survey and reports that spiders seized a villager. He guides Raytak's force to the newly rediscovered copper mine, where recoverable resources could support the settlement if the underground threat is removed.

A one-armed half-orc player who leads newly arrived advanced troops and two regular squads into the battle against the elite spider threatening Raytak's force. Tai's timely arrival prevents the creature from finishing its attack without opposition.
