In short (whole book)
Ninety-three-year-old veteran James Raytak enters an AI-run treatment pod and plays Limitless Lands as a Commander, hoping the game can help repair his body and memories. His class makes soldiers the basis of his strength, and he turns an inexperienced unit into a disciplined force while escorting settlers toward Hayden's Knoll. They defeat goblins, survive a corrupted forest, repel the Bloody Blades, and reach the settlement after its destruction. Raytak and Mayor Delling begin rebuilding, then Raytak clears a spider-infested mine with reinforcements led by Tai, another ill veteran receiving pod treatment. The victory improves relations with surviving goblin miners and raises Raytak to level 5. Raytak and Tai enter an unexplained blue portal, while company staff discover abnormal power use in both treatment pods and Lou begins an urgent investigation.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Limitless Lands enters beta as an immersive world controlled by an artificial intelligence. Its technology is also being tested in a secret medical program. Trey authorizes the first treatment for his gravely ill father, retired Colonel James Raytak, and the AI Cleo restores enough of Raytak's awareness to offer him a choice. He enters the game so that his decisions and memories can assist her repairs. Raytak chooses the unique Commander class. His effectiveness comes mainly through followers, leaving him responsible for their pay, equipment, morale, and survival. His first nine-soldier squad defeats goblins and helps player Jacoby rescue stranded loggers, but medic Private Drex and the wounded Private Long are killed. After escorting the survivors to a garrison town, Raytak intervenes when a rogue player attacks a guard and is nearly killed himself. Lieutenant Colonel Jacoby then assigns him to secure Hayden's Knoll, grants him independent field authority, and appoints Sergeant Brooks as his senior adviser. Raytak's new frontier command begins with promised reinforcements and a caravan preparing to depart.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Raytak equips and trains three inexperienced squads for the journey to Hayden's Knoll, while Sergeant Brooks helps impose discipline on the road. The caravan's hired mercenaries neglect their duties, and their captain leads most of them into a goblin trap. Raytak fortifies the wagons, places Liam over the guards who obey orders, and uses drilled volleys and shield formations to repel a much larger attack without losing a soldier from his own unit. Raytak then leads a rescue into the forest. His party exploits fighting among the goblins, destroys their remaining leaders, and frees eight captives, including the mercenary captain, who has lost an eye. The young druid player bonds with a giant beetle called Crunchy. After the battle, the sight of a child restores Raytak's knowledge that he has a son. He still cannot recall his son's identity, but the recovered memory persuades him to continue treatment. Outside the game, the first treatment cycle has measurably improved his condition even though his mind remains severely impaired without Cleo's temporary support. Raytak places the orphaned Edwin with Barnaby and Claire, and Liam plus eleven surviving mercenaries enlist in his growing force.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
As the caravan continues north, Raytak hires Drake, Quimby, and the druid player to train his soldiers in scouting. The players disappear into a rapidly corrupted forest, and Crunchy guides Raytak's rescue force after them. Spore-tainted creatures kill several soldiers, while a corrupted dryad kills Quimby and then Raytak. Quimby and Raytak respawn, Crunchy destroys the dryad, and the dying forest leaves Raytak with a soulbound artifact called the Foul Spore. The caravan reaches the northern transition point and reports the dangers along the route. Captain Reynolds confirms that Raytak is expected to assume command at Hayden's Knoll. He authorizes enough replacements to restore the force to fifty regular soldiers and assigns Raytak the final escort. Raytak completes the first stage of his Hayden's Knoll mission, reaches level 2, and chooses paths focused on troop leadership and close combat. He also gains Honor Guard, an ability that summons temporary defenders to draw attacks away from him. The caravan is now ready to enter the final region, where the Bloody Blades have been repeatedly attacking the settlement.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
The Foul Spore is identified as an epic artifact holding the corrupted dryad. It grants defensive benefits, but Raytak refuses the prisoner's offer of a binding life pact and keeps the artifact. Merchant and mage Phineas T. Moore joins the caravan with a goblin chief and the chief's son under his personal responsibility. Raytak also absorbs a hungry, poorly equipped transition-point squad into his command and supplies it for continued defense. Thirteen Bloody Blades ambush the caravan. The soldiers, settlers, drivers, Phineas, and the two goblins repel them, although fifteen soldiers and four civilians die. Raytak survives the masked mage's attack by using Honor Guard, reaches level 3, and distributes much of the captured money to bereaved civilian families. The caravan finally finds the old site of Hayden's Knoll in ruins, its people driven out by the Bloody Blades. At a defensible plateau, Raytak meets Mayor Delling and learns that the mayor is also a player. They begin an emergency program of food, shelter, fortification, and construction. Raytak takes authority over the local soldiers and accepts the next mission stage: protect the rebuilt town until its garrison is complete.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
Surveyors discover an old copper mine near the rebuilding settlement, but spiders have taken a villager and overwhelmed a group of goblin miners. Raytak clears the outer caverns, rescues the surviving goblins, and commits reinforcements against the source. Deeper inside, his force finds an elite spider sire guarding a blue portal and several transformed elf victims. The creature dominates many soldiers and kills Raytak just as advanced troops arrive under Scout Team Leader Tai. After respawning, Raytak returns to learn that he and Tai have defeated the unique enemy. Tai reveals that he is a former Marine NCO whom Raytak knew at the veterans' hospital and that he too is seriously ill inside a treatment pod. Raytak grants mercy deaths to the remaining victims, completes the spider quest, reaches level 5, and improves relations with the goblin miners to neutral. The mine and its tools are recovered for Hayden's Knoll. Tai accepts Raytak's leadership and serves as his senior enlisted partner. Together they enter the unexplained portal. Outside the game, medical staff detect recurring abnormal power use from both pods. Lou observes the players with administrator privileges, exits the game, and begins an urgent call without disclosing his discovery.
How does it end? (ending)
Raytak reaches the displaced people of Hayden's Knoll and takes command of its soldiers while Mayor Delling directs civilian construction. The settlement has begun rebuilding, but it still needs defenses and a completed garrison. Brooks remains with Raytak's force, and Phineas continues to answer for the goblin chief and his son. At the mine, Tai's reinforcements help destroy the unique spider sire. Raytak ends the suffering of its surviving transformed victims, recovers the miners' tools, and brings the local goblins to neutral relations with the settlement. He reaches level 5 and accepts Tai, a fellow veteran and MedPod patient, as his senior enlisted partner. The two then pass through a blue portal whose destination is unknown. Raytak's physical recovery and family memories remain incomplete. The Bloody Blades remain a threat, the imprisoned dryad is still held in the Foul Spore, and both treatment pods are drawing unexplained power. Lou observes the players with administrator access and leaves to make an urgent call without revealing what he saw.
