In this entry of the Beneath the Dragoneye Moons series, Elaine and Iona use their public identities as Sentinel Dawn and Valkyrie Dusk to fund apprenticeships at a struggling orphanage, inspiring one orphaned boy to dream of a soldier's future. Back at their villa, they take in Skye, an old friend of Iona's who became immortal through a bond with her unicorn companion and is seeking steady work, and are soon forced to prove her worth in earnest when a group of slavers scouts the household as prey. As the story widens to companions old and new, from the phoenix Auri reclaiming her bakery to a circle of powerful allies weighing an ambitious expedition to the moon, it follows this loosely bonded group through a series of separate challenges across their adopted world.
