A War Sentinel who hosts the meeting at which Elaine presents her plan for a moon expedition. He uses provocative and deliberately hazardous suggestions to push discussion of military problems forward among the assembled Sentinels.

Commander of the Sixth Legion. A curse limits her ability to perform ordinary physical tasks, but she retains extensive powers of delegation and assigns Elaine to the vermin operation near Massa.

Commander of the Fifth Cohort during the operation near Massa. Tribune Lavender leads the soldiers deployed to exterminate oversized predators created through biomancy, while Elaine serves under orders to provide medical and specialist support.

A kitsune Valkyrie trained by Iona and associated with the Eventide Establishment. Nina enters Countess Brunswick's castle in disguise to investigate corruption and determine who must be removed.

Iona's paired moon goddesses and the powers to whom she plans to dedicate the expedition. When falsified stars threaten the travelers' navigation, they work through Iona to replace the unreliable chart with a trustworthy route toward the moons.
Loonkot (Antagonist)

A hostile power interfering with the moon expedition. Loonkot subtly displaces the apparent stars in an attempt to send Elaine and Iona away from their intended destination, forcing divine assistance to restore a reliable route.
Kyriel (Supporting)

A healing goddess who cooperates with Elaine in Augustine. Their plan presents a public divine intervention while allowing Kyriel to expand Elaine's healing across the city, concealing Elaine's own role and unusual status from wider attention.
Marcella (Supporting)

Elaine's former vampire mentor and an expert biomancer at the School of Sorcery and Spellcraft. Elaine calls on Marcella to rebuild living tissue for a patient who cannot be treated through conventional healing skills.
