Back at the villa, Elaine and Iona consider hiring Skye, an exiled yuki-onna bonded to the unicorn Veruna. When eight elven slavers attack, Skye escapes to summon rangers while Elaine, Iona, and Fenrir kill the intruders. Her judgment secures the household position. Elsewhere, Auri reclaims her bakery in Sanguino after learning that the idle premises had been legally rented out. Years later, Elaine presents a costly but feasible plan for a moon expedition. She also warns the former orphan against joining the legions, though she promises protection if he chooses the Sixth. By the next time jump he has enlisted, and Elaine saves him after a giant rat breaks the cohort's line near Massa. Nina then infiltrates Countess Brunswick's court, documents corruption, kills Brunswick and one adviser linked to the Moon Cult, and spares another target rather than endanger bystanders.

Elaine buys a copied Remus-era journal that she believes may have belonged to her niece, though she cannot verify the connection. Iona still declines immortality, and Elaine resolves not to pressure her.

When she redirects the portals toward city centers, a marine guardian finally senses the sharply rising catastrophe and moves to intervene. The avenger launches the projectiles and declares Moonfall. The attack is underway, and the book closes without revealing whether the guardian stops it.
