Barred from the same opportunities as boys, she pursues healing and takes an oath after her mistakes contribute to her friend Lyra's death. Years later, Elaine saves an enslaved child from a fire, gains the power to restore lost tissue, repairs her own burns and her father's eye, then flees an arranged marriage. Ranger Squad 4 finds her amid a raid on a bandit settlement and accepts her first as a protected tagalong. Elaine proves herself through travel and combat, ultimately restoring the critically injured Kallisto during the battle that frees Virinum's river from a nothosaurus. She becomes a junior Ranger, merges her light and dark healer classes into Constellation of the Healer, and adds Firebug as a second class. She remains with the squad as its healer and begins fire-magic training under Artemis.

Elaine dies and is met by Papillon, the deity of change, outside the normal cycle of rebirth. She chooses to keep some memories of her former existence, though Papillon removes knowledge considered dangerous in her destination. Reborn as a human child on Pallos, Elaine grows up in the coastal town of Aquileia with her healer mother Julia, her guard father Marcus Elainus Cato, and her closest friend Lyra. As her eighth birthday approaches, she attends System Day to learn how classes, skills, statistics, and elemental alignments shape survival. The system rewards relevant activity, but careless allocation can be fatal. Elaine also learns that women cannot become citizens, while men can earn citizenship through military service. Her anger at this unequal order deepens when the temple allows boys to try practical skill stations but excludes the girls. The formal lesson ends with Elaine in tears, yet determined to find another way to learn useful skills and magic.

Elaine's parents arrange practical instruction outside the temple. Julia teaches household work and lets Elaine assist when Lyra is mauled by a windweasel. During the treatment, Elaine realizes that substantial biological knowledge from her former life remains available to her, and she begins considering healing as a calling while keeping that knowledge secret. At her system unlock, she becomes a level-eight Child of Earth with a wood alignment and an unusually large reserve of free statistics. Her parents help choose general skills, while Julia privately guides her toward vigilance, anatomy, first aid, learning, and social protection. Elaine delays choosing an advanced class. Marcus then takes her on patrol with Catonus. After brief lessons from local craftspeople, the guards investigate claims that Damonus has been using windweasels to threaten children. The creatures attack during the confrontation and badly injure Marcus's face. Elaine applies emergency treatment using Anatomy and First Aid until a healer can arrive. Catonus arrests Damonus, leaving Elaine with proof that her developing medical skills matter in a real crisis.

Artemis, Marcus's childhood friend and a powerful Ranger mage, returns to Aquileia after the windweasel attack. Marcus has lost the use of his left eye, and Elaine learns that an advanced light healer might someday restore it. Artemis exposes Elaine to the realities of combat by ordering her to execute the captive Damonus. Elaine refuses, after which Artemis kills him herself to remove a threat to Marcus. Artemis then trains Elaine's general skills and helps her meet the magical requirements for class selection. Guided inside her system library by an aspect called the Librarian, Elaine chooses Apprentice Control Healer with a light alignment, hoping eventually to repair her father's eye. Accumulated experience immediately raises the class to a high level. Soon afterward, the system reports that Elaine has killed Lyra. Elaine concludes that bandages used during Lyra's earlier treatment were not boiled, allowing an infection to develop while Lyra concealed her pain. After Lyra's cremation, Elaine makes a binding oath to heal without discrimination, protect patients and their privacy, share useful knowledge, and use a knife only defensively. The accepted oath strengthens her healing while imposing serious consequences for violations.

Six years pass. At fourteen, Elaine has evolved into Light of Hope and secretly holds the dark-aligned Shadow Healer class, making her Aquileia's last resort for diseases and for patients who cannot afford established healers. Artemis recommends enough magic control to gain a restoration skill at level 100. Elaine joins a night patrol to earn the needed experience and enters a burning house when guards refuse to rescue an enslaved child. She amputates the child's trapped arm, carries him out, treats his damaged lungs, and collapses with severe burns. The rescue pushes Light of Hope beyond level 100 and grants Detailed Restoration. Elaine uses it to regrow the child's arm, rebuild her own scarred body, and restore Marcus's damaged eye, although his returned vision is initially blurry. Julia and Marcus then announce Elaine's marriage to the son of a prominent citizen. Her prospective husband insists that he will control her skills and rejects equality, while a slave describes his abuse and coercion. Elaine's parents still refuse to cancel the match. She decides to flee Aquileia, leave a delayed letter explaining her refusal, and seek a place as healer for Artemis's Ranger squad.

Elaine leaves Aquileia alone and spends all her free points on speed, but fails to catch the Rangers before her supplies run out. A road trap leaves her with a broken arm, and Iola takes her to Verdant Village, a concealed settlement of runaway slaves. Elaine pretends to share their status, but Iola interrogates her, breaks her arm again, and jails her while the settlement's council considers her fate. Elaine learns that the village obtains necessities through banditry. When Rangers assault it, she escapes confinement but returns to treat the wounded. Iola takes her hostage during the fighting; Elaine disables her captor to escape, and Artemis kills Iola. Arthur had tracked Elaine's abductors, allowing Ranger Squad 4 to find the settlement. Julius initially refuses to accept a fourteen-year-old healer. Elaine responds by revealing that she lived and died on Earth before Papillon reincarnated her, and demonstrates how her retained knowledge improves medical treatment. She also discloses the restrictions imposed by her oath to Lyra. After weighing her abilities and limits, Julius and the other Rangers unanimously accept her as a protected tagalong, though not yet a formal squad member.

Artemis takes charge of Elaine's combat training, emphasizing escape, signaling, and physical survival. Elaine travels with Ranger Squad 4 through settlements and monster threats, learning how the team operates while remaining under its protection. The squad encounters Sentinel Bluebeard and his bonded dinosaur Katastrofi. Elaine also learns that major tissue created by Detailed Restoration needs a single follow-up healing after roughly four to five years. During a goblin attack, she heals Julius and Maximus under pressure and restores an exhausted Artemis, proving her battlefield value while also exposing the risks created by her lack of armor and touch-only treatment. At Virinum, the squad finds a high-level nothosaurus blocking river work and killing residents. Elaine proposes using kiln ash to foul the water and drive it onto land. Equipped with newly fitted mage armor, she joins the operation. The plan succeeds, but a tail strike critically injures Kallisto. Elaine crosses the active battlefield and restores his head and vital organs while Artemis diverts the monster. Julius and Arthur finish the fleeing creature. With Virinum's river safe and Kallisto alive, Julius formally asks Elaine to become a Ranger.

Elaine accepts Julius's offer, receives a Ranger badge, and is recognized as a full junior member of Squad 4. The governor rewards her for healing during the nothosaurus battle, and her new status gives her both pay and obligations. Reaching level 128 also makes her eligible for class advancement. Under squad protection, she enters her internal library and considers several paths. Elaine rejects Oath-bound Healer despite its power because she believes its binding nature would surrender too much personal agency. She chooses Constellation of the Healer instead, merging Light of Hope and Shadow Healer into one Celestial class and freeing another class slot. For that slot she selects Firebug, beginning a route toward fire magic and eventual flight. The change combines or replaces several familiar healing abilities, leaving a new toolkit whose limits are not yet understood. Julius accepts the choices after confirming that Elaine remains healer-tagged. Artemis takes responsibility for teaching her fire magic, while Maximus and Artemis help test the healing, emotional regulation, aura, pain-control, and barrier effects of her celestial class. Elaine remains with the squad as its healer and a novice mage rather than returning to Aquileia.

Ranger Squad 4 forces the level 412 nothosaurus out of Virinum's river and kills it on land, ending the threat to the city. Elaine crosses the battlefield to restore Kallisto after a devastating tail strike, and her actions lead Julius to offer her formal membership. She accepts, receives a Ranger badge and pay, and remains with the team as a junior member rather than returning to Aquileia. Her conflict with Julia and Marcus over the arranged marriage is unresolved, and the child she rescued remains enslaved in their household. Major restorations performed on Elaine, Marcus, and the child will also require later maintenance healing. During class advancement, Elaine refuses Oath-bound Healer because she believes it would compromise her freedom of choice. She instead merges Light of Hope and Shadow Healer into the Celestial class Constellation of the Healer, then chooses Firebug to begin learning fire magic and pursue eventual flight. Julius confirms that she retains her healer role, Artemis becomes her mage instructor, and Maximus helps test her unfamiliar celestial abilities. Lyra's oath still governs Elaine's medical ethics and limits her participation in killing.
