Jason (Protagonist)

A 26-year-old former U.S. military airman living alone with the effects of combat trauma. When an unfamiliar craft lands near his mountain cabin, he approaches with a rifle to help anyone aboard, but the craft seals him inside and he loses consciousness.

Dietz (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

An expressive synthetic being who operates and repairs the damaged gunship that carried Jason away from Earth. He pilots the vessel alone, while the absence of its regular crew remains unexplained.

Twingo (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

A biological alien engineer who boards the gunship at breaker's world to repair its gravity systems and reactor calibration. He has never encountered a human before meeting Jason and is wounded when armed attackers strike during the cargo transaction.

Bondress (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 10

A dangerous criminal client with personnel, private facilities, and influence at Pinnacle Station. He accepts the gunship's covert shipment, transfers most of the agreed payment, and directs the crew to remain available for further business.

the doctor (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 11

A specialist assigned by Bondress to watch sealed cargo and install neural implants in Jason during a forced transport mission. The doctor arrives with Bondress's security personnel and initially treats Jason with open hostility.

the warrior-class captive (Supporting)

Also known as the warrior

First appears in chapter 14

A trafficked combat specialist awakened from stasis during the escape at the Vault. After Jason promises to free the captives, the warrior agrees to help and takes responsibility for guarding the gunship and an untrusted pilot.

the four-armed technical captive (Minor)

Also known as the technical specialist

First appears in chapter 14

A four-armed systems and flight specialist freed from one of the traffickers' stasis pods. The rescue team needs the captive's technical knowledge to defeat the Vault's controls and prepare a captured cargo ship for departure.

the surviving cargo-ship pilot (Minor)

First appears in chapter 14

One of the pilots awakened during the Vault jailbreak. Considered untrustworthy, the survivor works under the warrior's supervision while helping prepare the captured cargo ship for launch as the facility's alarm spreads.

the battle synth (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

A combat synthetic transported in stasis among the trafficked captives. Jason permits the unit to awaken after securing an agreement that the ship and its crew will not be harmed, and offers freedom rather than ownership.

the small alien captive (Supporting)

Also known as the small alien

First appears in chapter 16

A freed captive who has nowhere else to go after the other prisoners depart. The small alien asks to stay aboard the gunship, and Jason accepts the request.

the coordinating scientist (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 17

The scientist who coordinates Bondress's illegal genetics program. The doctor identifies this figure as a crucial target whose removal would substantially delay the work at the concealed research and production complex.

the woman at Jason's cabin (Minor)

First appears in chapter 21

A woman from Jason's former life and the person on Earth he still cares about. She comes to his cabin after receiving his letter and the instructions that allow her to claim the property he is leaving behind.
