Former U.S. Air Force pararescueman Jason is accidentally carried from Earth aboard a damaged alien gunship operated by the synthetic Dietz. A cargo pickup brings engineer Twingo aboard and draws them into work for the criminal Bondress. When Jason, Twingo, and a coerced doctor discover that a new shipment contains trafficked sentient beings, they expose Dietz's betrayal and turn the delivery into a jailbreak. Jason gains the knowledge to pilot the ship, frees the captives, spares and exiles Dietz, and keeps a small crew together. They then devastate Bondress's illegal genetics facility, although its coordinating scientist escapes. The companions retain the gunship, name it Phoenix, and form Omega Force under Jason's captaincy. Jason returns briefly to Earth to surrender his old life and property, then prepares to rejoin the crew at Pinnacle Station, where a woman from his past may also appear.

Jason, a former U.S. military airman living in isolation, investigates an unfamiliar craft that lands near his mountain cabin. The ship seals him inside and departs Earth before he can escape. He wakes near Saturn and meets Dietz, the synthetic being operating the damaged vessel. Dietz says Jason boarded during an emergency departure and damaged a navigation component while firing his rifle. The gunship travels to Mars, where automated systems salvage material from ancient ruins and repair much of the damage. Dietz asks Jason to act as a biological representative for a cargo collection because synthetics have limited legal recognition in some regions. A walk on Mars gives Jason a renewed sense of purpose, and he agrees to accompany Dietz despite distrusting his account of the missing crew. Before leaving the Solar System, Jason learns that the last manifested crew disembarked elsewhere 39 Earth days earlier and never returned. The ship also records Dietz as property belonging to its captain. With both mysteries unresolved, Jason and Dietz enter slip space for the remote cargo destination.

At breaker's world, Dietz equips Jason for combat and places him on the manifest as commander so he can approve a cargo payment. Engineer Twingo repairs the gunship, then is wounded when attackers open fire during the transaction. Jason gets him aboard and the ship escapes. Twingo warns that the concealed shipment is probably illegal and that Jason may now be treated as an accomplice. At Pinnacle Station, the criminal client Bondress takes delivery and keeps the crew nearby. Twingo learns that breaker's world authorities blame him for the violence there. Bondress then compels the gunship to carry twenty-eight sealed modules and supplies a doctor and armed guards for the journey to the Vault. After installing Jason's neural implants, the doctor reveals that the modules contain trafficked sentient beings. Bondress forced the doctor into genetic work by threatening the doctor's sister, who has since died. Jason, Twingo, and the doctor agree to free the captives. They then intercept a call proving that Dietz plans to place Jason in stasis, kill the doctor, and surrender the gunship to Bondress. The would-be rescuers have three days to stop him and prepare their escape.

Jason, Twingo, and the doctor build devices to disable Dietz and weapons that can pass the Vault's security. At arrival, they incapacitate Dietz and Bondress's guards, awaken selected captives, and enlist a warrior and a four-armed technical specialist. The rescue becomes a violent breakout when the group is challenged inside the Vault. They seize a concealed cargo ship, move the stasis pods aboard, and escape with both vessels despite damage to the gunship. The doctor begins a hazardous neural transfer that gives Jason practical knowledge of the gunship's controls. After waking, Jason takes over as pilot and permits a battle synth to leave stasis on the condition that it not attack the crew. The synth explains that synthetic minds possess individual free will even though much of society treats them as equipment. On a deserted moon, the freed prisoners prepare to depart in the captured cargo ship with a cover story and the valuables recovered during the escape. The small alien and battle synth ask to join Jason. The warrior, doctor, and Twingo also remain aboard. Jason spares Dietz but exiles him aboard the departing vessel. The core group keeps the gunship while considering the doctor's proposal to destroy Bondress's illegal genetics facility.

The doctor describes Bondress's concealed genetics complex as part of an illegal program backed by interests within several governments. Jason's crew trains for a direct strike, with Jason piloting, the small alien serving as co-pilot, Twingo in engineering, and the warrior and battle synth assigned to ground combat. At the target, Jason orders missile attacks that destroy much of the surface site and collapse underground sections. Two people flee in a ground vehicle. Jason refuses to fire into a populated area, and the ground team cannot catch them. The coordinating scientist therefore escapes with a companion. The gunship withdraws under attack from law enforcement. Jason also redirects suspicion toward Bondress's own personnel, and Bondress comes under attack aboard his vessel after learning of the facility's destruction. His fate remains unknown. Over the following weeks, Jason's group converts the liberated valuables into usable resources. They unanimously stay together, formally recognize Jason as captain, rename the gunship Phoenix, and create Omega Force to help people left without protection. Jason returns alone to Earth, gives his cabin and property to a woman from his past, and prepares to rejoin the others at Pinnacle Station. She indicates that she may join them there. Dietz remains exiled, the missing former crew is unexplained, and Bondress's network and the escaped scientist remain unresolved threats.

Jason and his companions keep the repaired gunship and use resources taken from the Vault to establish themselves independently. Jason becomes captain, names the ship Phoenix, and joins Twingo, the doctor, the co-pilot, the warrior, and the battle synth in forming Omega Force to aid people whom governments will not protect. He briefly returns to Earth, gives his cabin and property to a woman from his past, and chooses to rejoin the crew at Pinnacle Station. She may meet them there. Dietz remains alive in exile, while the fate of the gunship's former crew is still unknown. Bondress's fate is also uncertain after an attack on his vessel. His wider network and government-linked backers remain potential enemies, and the coordinating scientist escaped the destroyed genetics facility with a companion. Twingo is still wanted at breaker's world, and Jason remains concerned that discovery of Earth's location could place it in danger.
