Alexander (Protagonist)

Commander of the Miletus Legion and leader of its voyage to Venice. Faced with shortages in a crowded settlement, he seeks trade and supplies across the Adriatic. He can manipulate nearby ordinary steel and brings formidable personal combat abilities to the expedition.

Constans (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Alexander's trusted merchant representative and operational lieutenant. Her commercial judgment complements the Legion's military strength as he prepares an expedition to relieve Miletus's shortages.

Theo (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A sailor and fleet officer who places crews of sailors and Legion veterans aboard captured pirate ships. His practical command helps Alexander convert a chance victory at sea into a functioning flotilla bound for Venice.

Nikephoros (Supporting)

A specialist in breeding horses and cattle who believes his skills can be adapted to monsters. Alexander hires him for a domestication project and offers safety to his family, who face retaliation from the tamer's former employer.

Goblin chieftain (Supporting)

Leader of the goblins living along the route to the dwarven settlement. He negotiates a binding agreement to protect Alexander's people, caravans, and allies in exchange for equipment, security, and a regular supply of monster cores.

Mikhail (Supporting)

Commander and liaison for the dark elf scouts protecting the Venice compound. The leader explains how goblins absorb monster cores to increase their strength and intelligence, information that shapes Alexander's plans for his recruits.

De Zorzi family head (Minor)

The formidable patriarch who hosts Alexander at a Venetian gathering intended to address conflict between their interests. His family expects an understanding with the pirates to protect old houses, but he fights when raiders violate it.

Pirate King (Antagonist)

The distant pirate leader whom Alexander's captors claim to serve. His followers say selected Venetian prisoners will undergo an unholy ritual that makes them loyal and sends them back as infiltrators, leaving the scope of his network uncertain.

Living armor (Supporting)

A semi-intelligent suit Alexander creates from steel, lizard hide, enchanted batteries, and dwarven intelligence runes. It recognizes him as its owner, develops a shadowed demonic form, and accepts a contract to protect and obey him in exchange for cores and autonomy.

Tenebrosis (Supporting)

The name and evolved identity of the living armor Alexander created during his journey across North Africa. After consuming orichalcum, it gains stronger shadow abilities and working wings, then breaks the restraints that have sealed Alexander's active powers.

Surviving female raptor (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 16

The sole surviving female raptor from a lizard-kin patrol. She follows Alexander, accepts his food and care, and gains his trust as an intelligent new traveling companion.

Ivy (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 17

The intelligent female velociraptor who followed Alexander after he survived a lizard-kin patrol. Now named and trained as his mount, she proves exceptionally fast, stealthy, and responsive before becoming his bonded partner through the Dragon Lancer class.

Tilly psychic translator (Supporting)

A telepathic Tilly liaison who receives Alexander under guard at her people's mountain fortress. She explains their dragon ancestry, their distrust of corrupted humans, and the long war threatening their city while guiding him toward its leaders.

Tilly war leaders (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 24

The commanders authorized to commit the Tilly city to war. Exhausted by a prolonged struggle against demonic corruption, they hear Alexander's offer of outside military aid and negotiate the supplies, shelter, and forces needed for a joint offensive.

Dwarf commander (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 25

Commander of one hundred elite dwarves sent by his king to reinforce Venice. He leads the dwarven contingent defending Alexander's compound and the city's remaining free territory.

Pirate warlord (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 26

The field commander directing the pirate occupation of Venice. During Alexander's counterattack, he compels surviving pirates to keep fighting and drives them into pursuit through the trapped ground between the opposing lines.

Tilly archer captain (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 32

A seasoned officer who volunteers to command two hundred Tilly auxiliaries entering renewable Legion service. Her combined force of dragon lancers and dragon archers is due to assemble at Carthage for transport to Venice.
