In short (whole book)
Alexander leads the Miletus Legion to Venice to secure trade, ships, and supplies. After building a commercial base and new alliances, he is captured during a coordinated pirate attack and escapes in North Africa, where restraints leave most of his powers unusable. He survives a demon-corrupted wilderness, creates the living armor Tenebrosis, bonds the raptor Ivy, and discovers portals that threaten the world. Freed by his armor, he allies with the dragon-descended Tilly, returns to liberate Venice, kills the occupying warlord, and appoints Mikhail to govern its reconstruction. Alexander then joins a multinational assault near Carthage. His corruption takes control during the battle, frees his giant spirit, and shatters his mind. The Tilly later close every remaining portal. After two months of psychic healing, Alexander prepares to return to Venice with Constans, Isabella, Ivy, and a promised Tilly auxiliary, but combat or severe stress could cause another collapse.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Alexander established himself as commander of the Miletus Legion and ruler of Nova Roma, supported by trusted officers, summoned spirits, and allies from several peoples. Constans serves as his merchant representative and operational lieutenant, Theo commands sailors, Nikephoros and Basil provide experienced Legion leadership, and a bound giant spirit gives Alexander extraordinary force when summoned. The settlement at Miletus is crowded and lacks enough food, water, supplies, and raw materials for its growing population. Those pressures make a dependable overseas trade route essential as the next stage of Alexander's effort to secure his people.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Alexander eases Miletus's water shortage with rune-based desalination, then takes the Legion west in search of Italian trade. After rescuing Captain Francesco from pirates, the expedition reaches Venice, registers as traders and privateers, buys a fortified base, and profits from captured ships and pirate bounties. Constans organizes commerce while Theo develops the sea route and Nikephoros guards the compound. Alexander also defeats the Shadow Queen and learns that she was Isabella, a betrayed villager. She becomes his allied spirit and scout. A regional quest leads him to an isolated dwarven settlement, where he exchanges enchanting knowledge and proposes trade based on orichalcum. The dwarven king accepts. To make that route practical, Alexander hires a tamer, identifies large buffalo-like monsters for caravan use, and negotiates a binding route alliance with a goblin chieftain. He recruits twenty goblin youths under strict conduct contracts. Although a powerful Venetian merchant family retaliates against the new operation, the compound remains secure. Mikhail agrees to relocate from C.K. and manage the growing business.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
The Venice storefront is robbed as the pirate threat grows into an organized campaign. Raids reveal that a Sardinian-backed warlord is assembling a fleet, while Alexander's hunters encounter an enemy capable of dangerous lightning attacks. At a gathering hosted by the de Zorzi family, pirates use gas and poisoned bolts to seize selected wealthy guests. A holy net badly burns Isabella, and Alexander wakes aboard a pirate ship in orichalcum restraints that suppress his active powers. His captors claim the Pirate King plans to convert prisoners through an unholy ritual and return them as loyal infiltrators. Isabella finds Alexander after reporting that Venice has been devastated. Their escape destroys the ship's crew, but a final attack throws Alexander overboard while Isabella retreats into his spirit. He drifts to the North African coast with no equipment and no access to her. Passive abilities and regeneration keep him alive, yet he cannot cross the monster-filled land toward Carthage. The surrounding plants and creatures bear red sigils and signs of an unknown corruption.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Stranded and restrained in North Africa, Alexander establishes a hidden camp, hunts corrupted animals, and turns their cores into unusually powerful tools. The same influence spreads into his body, granting stronger attributes while creating an equal risk that something demonic will control him. He mines iron and uses dwarven principles to create intelligent armor. The new entity covers him in shadow, improves his weapons, and accepts a contract to serve and protect him in exchange for cores and independence, though it cannot yet break his restraints. Alexander begins the exposed journey toward Carthage and observes organized lizard-kin cavalry. When a patrol discovers him, failed communication becomes a fight. His armor develops short flights, but corruption pushes Alexander into a violent rage, raising his condition to five percent. One female raptor survives. She follows him, accepts food and care, and enters a mutual protection contract. Alexander continues west with a capable new companion, now aware that even limited corruption can override his judgment.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Alexander names his raptor Ivy and bonds with her through the Dragon Lancer class after compelling a lizard-kin patrol to stop pursuing him. Their shared endurance carries them to the coast, where an abandoned fort contains corrupted former humans around a demon-realm portal. Destroying them closes the rift and reveals a world quest: every portal must be sealed to prevent extinction. Alexander now recognizes that corruption has distorted his anger and that the lizard-kin may be resisting the demons rather than serving them. Carthage itself is abandoned by day and overrun at night. Alexander infiltrates its military harbor to find orichalcum, discovering that holy, healing, and uncorrupted light energy are effective against demons. He teaches his living armor to cleanse cores and produce anti-demon enchantments, then locates orichalcum in old naval equipment. After Alexander releases its contract and gives it the metal freely, the armor evolves into Tenebrosis, the armor of shadow and death. Tenebrosis shatters his collar and manacles, restoring every sealed active ability. Isabella is alive but still healing within his spirit, and Alexander's corruption has reached ten percent.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
With his powers restored and Tenebrosis capable of sustained flight, Alexander leaves Carthage in search of allies. He approaches the mountain fortress of the Tilly, dragon-descended people who have resisted demonic corruption for generations. Their psychic translator explains that corrupted humans helped create the horde and that Tilly warriors train to resist the same fate. Alexander learns that the class system and cross-world arrivals predate the temporary barrier raised through the sacrifice of Earth's gods. The Tilly war leaders accept his proposal for a joint assault on Carthage, committing their remaining forces while he promises to return with help within roughly a month. Alexander flies back across the Mediterranean and finds Venice split between defenders and pirate occupiers. His compound still stands with Legion, dark elf, and dwarf support. Constans has become a capable pirate-class naval commander, and Isabella is recovering from both her injuries and a dangerous relapse into her former Shadow Queen state. Alexander reveals the demon threat and his advancing corruption to his companions. He must liberate Venice before he can honor the alliance against Carthage.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
Alexander releases his closest companions from magical loyalty contracts, then enchants the warship Bosporus for concealment and defense. The Legion's counterattack burns the pirate fleet and strikes through occupied Venice with help from Isabella's shades, Basil's fighters, and Alexander's giant spirit. When pirates break toward civilian positions, Nikephoros rallies the defense and goblin grenade troops save Alexander from a street mob. Alexander kills the pirate warlord in a duel, and the remaining occupation force surrenders. The last fleeing ship is also defeated. Victory grants Alexander system recognition as regional governor of both Nova Roma and Venice, but he assigns Mikhail civil authority because Mikhail kept Venice supplied and earned public trust during the siege. Reforms create a state navy, restrict private armies, and fund rebuilding. Alexander retains naval control while Constans helps with the transition. He also chooses a permanent draconic evolution for Ivy, changing her from a velociraptor into a young shadow dragon-wormling without erasing her memories. After recovery and resupply, the Legion departs Venice to fulfill the Tilly alliance and attack the demon portal near Carthage.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Alexander returns to the Tilly with Legion soldiers, dwarven auxiliaries, dark elf scouts, goblin troops, and supplies. He reunites with Ivy but leaves the immature wormling protected during the assault. More than a thousand Tilly cavalry and their young dragons join the advance on the fortress near Carthage. The alliance captures the outer position and clears much of the keep with holy ammunition and light, but night brings a demon attack and an immense monster horde. Alexander's corruption seizes his body, corrupts and frees his giant spirit, and uses accumulated power to continue killing without rational control. His mind shatters under the sensory overload. The local portal is closed and the army survives, but Tilly mages die restraining Alexander while archers draw him away from allies. Constans, Isabella, Ivy, and Tilly psychic healers spend two months restoring enough of his identity for travel. During that time the Tilly close the final seven portals, completing the world quest. Alexander remains visibly corrupted, mentally fragile, and dangerous under stress. He prepares to return to Venice with his companions and a recall link to the Tilly city. A two-hundred-soldier Tilly auxiliary will follow under contract, while Mikhail continues governing Venice and the Pirate King's wider network remains unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
The combined Legion, dwarf, dark elf, goblin, and Tilly force captures the fortress near Carthage and closes its portal, but Alexander's demonic corruption overwhelms him during the night battle. He loses control, his giant spirit is corrupted and freed, and his vastly empowered body continues killing until sunrise. Tilly mages and archers sacrifice themselves to contain and divert him, while Constans, Isabella, Ivy, and psychic healers gradually recover his identity over the next two months. During that recovery, the Tilly close the last seven portals and complete the world quest, ending the immediate portal threat. Alexander remains visibly corrupted and psychologically fragile, and his loyal living armor has no independent moral restraint. He is cleared to return to Venice only if he avoids combat and severe stress. Mikhail governs Venice's reconstruction while Alexander retains its navy. Constans is positioned to direct future operations, and a Tilly captain will bring two hundred contracted cavalry soldiers to Carthage for transport to Venice. The wider pirate network and the Pirate King's conversion scheme remain unresolved.
