Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Jason Burke (Protagonist)

Also known as Jason

Appears from the start

Captain of Phoenix and leader of Omega Force. Jason is building a small resistance while investigating evidence that the fallen empire's missing warships are receiving outside logistical support, even though every direct move risks exposing his fragile network.

Cage (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Phoenix's systems specialist and a member of Omega Force.

The Machine (Antagonist)

Also known as hidden ruler, corrupt AI

Appears from the start

A hostile intelligence linked to an ancient superweapon and now operating through Confed systems. Its expanding reach presents a regional threat to Omega Force and its allies, though its larger purpose remains unknown.

Jason's neural-implant intelligence (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A partial ancient intelligence hidden inside Jason's implant. It secretly improves the implant and accesses Phoenix while weighing whether to help Jason oppose the Machine, keeping its existence from both him and his crew.

Crusher (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Jason's Galvetic partner and combat specialist. He joins the inquiry into an illicit fuel sale while warning that overt attacks could draw Confed retaliation against Omega Force and the civilians around its resistance network.

Twingo (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Phoenix's engineer and one of the specialists working to stabilize Lucky's rebuilt body. Twingo remains hopeful even as the synth's new systems produce dangerous freezes and prolonged periods of dissociation.

Lucky (Supporting)

Also known as rebuilt battle synth, Mark II body

First appears in chapter 2

Omega Force's battle synth, struggling to function in a rebuilt body whose unstable systems cause freezes, speech lapses, and periods of dissociation.

Saditava Mok (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

An intelligence provider with sanctuary, personnel, and logistical resources. Mok supports the emerging resistance but urges Jason to avoid provoking a war until they have a strategy that will not expose civilian worlds to retaliation.

Former Imperial intelligence operative (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A former high-level operative extracted from an occupied industrial world. She is injured and remains an untrusted passenger aboard Phoenix.

Scleesz (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

A Confed councilman forced to accommodate the Machine's unexplained military appointments. He sees that recent conquest has overextended the Confed fleet and fears that any sign of disloyalty will bring the hidden ruler's scrutiny upon him.

Kellea Colleren (Supporting)

Also known as Kellea

First appears in chapter 9

A Cooperative admiral ordered to help the Confed hunt the missing Imperial fleet while her government conceals Earth's military expansion. She distrusts the policy of accommodation but proceeds cautiously under orders.

Cooperative premier (Supporting)

Also known as head of the Cooperative

First appears in chapter 9

The Cooperative's political leader, pursuing an agreement with the Confed as a means of survival. She orders Kellea's force to assist the Confed while concealing Earth's rapid construction of advanced warships during negotiations.

Doc (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 14

Omega Force's medic. Doc helps assess the damage caused by the immense archive stored in Jason's Type 3 implant and identifies a higher-capacity upgrade as the most practical way to relieve the immediate strain.

Key-program fragment (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 14

The intelligence secretly residing in Jason's neural implant, now identified as a surviving fragment of the Key program associated with the Machine's release. It can access the archive, but may not survive the implant replacement Jason needs.

Felex Tezakar (Supporting)

Also known as Crusher, guardian archon of Galvator, commander of the Galvetic Legions

First appears in chapter 17

Crusher's formal identity. He holds Galvator's highest protective office and leads its military forces. His depot-infiltration plan demonstrates the expertise behind those positions, prompting Jason to ask him to take a larger operational role.

Captain Marcus Webb (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 19

An Earth captain trusted with Jason's confidential warning that the Cooperative premier is compromised and the Confed is controlled by the Machine. Webb agrees to consult 707 before carrying the warning farther through Earth's command.

707 (Minor)

First appears in chapter 19

Leader of a community of battle-synth refugees. Captain Marcus Webb identifies 707 as the adviser he will consult before deciding how to escalate Jason's warning about the Machine and the Cooperative leadership.

Captain Edgars (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 25

Commander of the human Victory-class cruisers entering the capital battle. Edgars brings the cruisers into action beside Kellea's defecting force and helps drive the surviving 405th battleship from the system.
