A man from Earth who died and awoke two years earlier as a demonic spirit tree, rooted in a mountaintop courtyard. He is fully sentient but cannot move, speak, or be perceived, and experiences the world through an internal monologue, sleeping through long stretches he cannot control. He survives on blood offerings, dissolving corpses through an innate Devour ability, and grows stronger through a private status-and-reward system that grants him new skills whenever he 'signs in.' Slow-growing and wholly dependent on his visitors, for now he can only watch, wait, and scheme.

A young blonde cultivator in a black cloak who appears in the courtyard where Ashlock is rooted. She cuts down two sword-wielding men with bursts of purple light and a short blink-like step, then drags their bodies to the tree's roots as an offering before leaving. Clearly powerful despite her youth, though what she wants with the strange tree is not yet clear.

A small white squirrel-like creature that slips through a failed summoning rift and lands on Ashlock's branch. It offers a mutual, non-controlling pact rather than submitting to a summon, and is welcomed by both Ashlock and Stella, who names it Maple. Unusually intelligent, it teleports short distances with no visible effort and carries no detectable life energy of its own, a mystery even to those closest to it.

The last daughter of House Ravenborne, made her family's heir only after her elder brother was killed by Stella Crestfallen at a sect tournament. A Soulfire cultivator who wields blue soulfire and a blade, she is first seen infiltrating Red Vine Peak in search of a missing kinsman. Her father, the Ravenborne Grand Elder, orders her to assassinate Stella within five years or be sent to certain death, leaving her torn between obedience and flight.

The head of House Ravenborne and Diana's father, an aged and formidable cultivator whose sheer presence marks him as Star Core tier. Ruthless and openly contemptuous of his family's younger generation, he blames Diana for a botched mission and orders her to kill Stella Crestfallen within five years or face a suicidal beast tide. Forbidden by the sect Patriarch from moving against Stella himself, he works through his daughter instead.

A senior figure of House Winterwrath, an albino man with scarlet eyes who descends on the region riding a thousand-meter ice golem amid a catastrophic snowstorm. Allied with House Evergreen, he arrives to make war on House Ravenborne and its holdings.

A large green-flame cultivator of House Evergreen, over two meters tall and casually brutal toward the mortals around him. He corners Diana in a town below Ravenborne Peak, boasting that his house has newly allied with House Winterwrath through his sister's marriage. The burly, bearded leader of House Evergreen, a powerful vine-and-earth cultivator tied to House Winterwrath by his daughter's marriage into that family. He personally orchestrates the assault on Ravenborne Peak, overrunning it with green-fire vines.

A square-faced green-flame cultivator of House Evergreen who has long, secretly hated his cousin Wayne and the family's main bloodline. Sadistic and ambitious, he murders Wayne moments after Wayne captures Diana, then abandons her to chase a rarer prize: the disembodied soul of the fallen Ravenborne Grand Elder, which he believes he can absorb for a surge of power.

His companion balks at the scheme and flees, leaving Mike to press on alone; finding Diana hiding in the courtyard, he tries to seize her as a shield.

A car-sized grey spider with eight blood-red eyes, pulled from a dimensional rift as one of Ashlock's summons and named by him. Bound to Ashlock through a mental tether, Larry ranges the mountain as a scout and hunter. He is a living creature rather than a disposable resource: if he is killed, he is gone for good.

A starving mortal child from a village near Red Vine Peak, found hiding from a monster by Stella. He begs to learn cultivation so he can protect his father and younger sisters, though his spirit root is so weak he has almost no chance of ever advancing. Stella half-promises to teach him if he can one day climb the mountain to reach her.

A floor-colored, energy-less slime dwelling in an abandoned cavern deep in the mine beneath Red Vine Peak, feared even by the cave rats. It can absorb an attacker's power and shift its own element to match. Ashlock seizes control of it through his roots and keeps it as a durable, endlessly reusable tool, naming it Bob.

An elderly, cane-carrying man in a plain but finely made white robe who appears at Red Vine Peak with no detectable cultivation and no named family or sect, asking only to be called 'Senior Lee.' Grandfatherly and generous, he wields spatial techniques effortlessly, without gestures, and claims long experience aiding spatial cultivators. Both Maple and Larry shrink from him on sight, hinting he is far more dangerous than he looks.

A cultivator of House Evergreen, once hailed as a prodigy but stalled at peak Soulfire for roughly a decade and bitterly resentful of her cousin Tristan's sudden rise. Earlier she schemed to have Stella captured and rendered into a 'pill furnace' to force her own breakthrough. Caught up in the assault on Red Vine Peak, she survives where others fall and carries warnings back to her superiors.

A balding Redclaw branch elder near the end of his cultivation life, charged with overseeing the family's young prodigies. Gruff and openly skeptical of binding his kin to an unproven 'immortal,' he nonetheless respects his Grand Elder and becomes the first to kneel and swear the Ashfallen loyalty oath.

A young red-haired woman of the Redclaw family who serves as the Grand Elder's attendant and messenger. Diligent and increasingly awed by the vast, unseen power now looming over her family's new home.

A vast storm that gathers over the region around Darklight City and Red Vine Peak, its clouds darkening without warning. Seen through Ashlock's Eye of the Tree God, it carries visible eyes that mark it as no ordinary weather. A Redclaw elder who spots it from the wall raises the alarm and orders everyone underground, warning that Darklight City and perhaps the whole Blood Lotus sect could be doomed. Conventional defenses seem to offer no way to turn it aside.

An ordinary infant grass snake living in the grass of Ashlock's courtyard, claimed almost by accident as his weakest system summon for a trivial cost. Ashlock takes to calling it Little Kai and keeps it as a harmless pet rather than a fighting beast.

A massive, bald rogue cultivator with earth affinity, owner of the hidden Golden Springs Pavilion reached through a concealed tunnel behind a Darklight City noodle shop. Once the chief supplier of servants to House Ravenborne and an old acquaintance of Diana's, he now brokers oath-bound rogue cultivators as recruits for the fledgling Ashfallen sect.

A large, golden-haired rogue cultivator built for mining and construction, recruited through Mr. Choi as the Ashfallen sect's first hired outside builder. Blunt and unimpressed by the ruined mountain when he arrives, his attitude changes the instant Ashlock reveals himself.
