Amid the chaos, Tristan Evergreen murders his cousin Wayne and slips away to hunt the Grand Elder's disembodied soul. Homeless and hunted, Diana flees to the now-empty Red Vine Peak to hide, unaware the ominous tree there is anything more than it seems.

Ashlock warily tolerates Diana as she recovers and quietly investigates him. When an intruder named Mike arrives hunting Stella for a horrific 'pill furnace' scheme, Ashlock and Diana kill him together, and Ashlock absorbs his soul core to finally form his own, an amethyst core of the rare Spatial element, ascending into the Soulfire realm and surviving a brutal lightning tribulation that leaves him a full-grown tree. She and Diana also learn that a massive beast tide is coming within a few years, that the Blood Lotus sect already plans to abandon its depleted territory and relocate, and that the houses expect to fight over the best new land, with most mortals left to die. Larry's ongoing rampage has made him a local legend, the 'Ashen Devourer,' blamed for slaughtering cultivators near the villages. Before heading home, the pair trade with traveling merchants for new clothing and a spatial technique, and Stella turns aside a merchant's attempt to seize her cursed earrings.

Back at Red Vine Peak, Ashlock reestablishes written contact and reveals his goal: to found a sect. Stella and Diana join him, and he names it Ashfallen. Diana explains how beast tides work, driven by energy flowing along ley lines and pooling at 'spiritual springs' that deplete and force beasts to migrate straight through settled land. Weighing whether to fight, flee, or shelter, Ashlock reveals he has already hollowed a long root-tunnel down to an abandoned mine he can use as a refuge. He also undergoes a painful mutation that opens a 'Demonic Eye' in his trunk, an eye that lays bare a person's soul core and floods anyone it targets with terror, even seasoned cultivators. Diana makes the first trip down the tunnel as her opening task for the sect, reaching the mine and glimpsing what looks like an inhabited town deeper within. Lee gifts Ashlock a rare 'Divine Fragment' that violently rockets his cultivation toward the Star Core realm and triggers a colossal tribulation. When Stella is struck down protecting him, Lee revives her with a divine pill, then flees the heavens' wrath for having done so. As the tribulation blazes, hundreds of Evergreen and Winterwrath cultivators, led by Tristan (now Star Core), storm Red Vine Peak, believing Stella is the one ascending.

Both Stella and Diana break through to new Soulfire stages, nearing the Star Core realm, and begin quietly managing the sect's city business in disguise, while Ashlock keeps his true nature and full strength hidden even from his new subordinates.

Then a sentient Dao Storm, a titan-like vortex of water, wind, and lightning, descends on the region and advances straight for Ashlock. He portals the Redclaw family and nearby villagers into the mine for shelter, then fights the storm alongside Larry and the Redclaw Grand Elder, but nothing they do can stop it; it shatters his barriers and burns through his bark. As Ashlock's power fails, Maple abruptly reappears and cleaves the storm's humanoid core cleanly in two before collapsing, spent. It is not enough. The storm knits itself back together, engulfs the mountain, and tears Ashlock's tree body apart, his cursed black sap spraying into the vortex as he is destroyed.
