In short (whole book)
Joe develops magical writing, recruits a party, and helps the Wanderers claim a settlement after a mine quest transforms it into an instant dungeon. The party eventually clears the dungeon, and Joe recovers plans for Pathfinder's Hall, a suppressed artifact that reveals class advancement paths. After briefly leaving the guild over Daisy's coercion, he returns under an autonomous contract and leads the hall's construction with Terra and Tim. Joe becomes its owner and only living architect-specialist, establishes shrines for Tatum and Lady Spriggan, and retrieves a manual for converting spells into rituals from the prison dungeon. His new shadow class receives conditional royal approval. During the wolfman invasion, Joe's mass enchantment helps defend Ardania. The king kills the wolfman warlord, then apparent human conspirators blow him apart. Joe resurrects the king and gains crown protection, land, nobility, and top-war-contributor rewards. Humanity learns that two more races will arrive in one month. Joe kills the silence mage who betrayed the defense, but the larger regicide conspiracy remains open.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Joe became a healer within the Wanderers. His hidden Ritualist class gave him unusual access to ritual magic, and he formed an allegiance with Tatum. Joe developed strong mental attributes, learned healing and shadow abilities, and acquired a private defended warehouse. He also discovered a shrine network that permits rapid travel between linked sacred sites. His actions helped free Cel from the former control of the Mage's College, although Cel remained resentful of the methods Joe had used. Aten continued to lead the Wanderers, with Terra among the guild's established magical specialists. Joe's combination of secret class powers, divine favor, and willingness to use unconventional solutions made him valuable to the guild while also leaving him with dangerous secrets and a reputation that discouraged some potential allies.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Ardania chooses the Wanderers for a royal trial: the guild must secure an outlying settlement and establish a headquarters there. Joe expands his magical options by extracting a valid spell from Cel's grimoires, and Tatum grants him the ability to create learnable scrolls from suitable materials. He begins training at the Mage's College, learns Mage Armor, and develops a daily routine for raising several attributes. Seeking a dependable party, Joe recruits Jackson, a monk whose chiropractic and acupuncture techniques become combat adjustments, and Bard, a Scald who fights with axes and chants. Jackson dies during a bear encounter, but Joe immediately restores him with Resurrection. Alexis, an Aromatic Artificer specializing in poisoned crossbow attacks, then joins on trial. Aten sends the group to investigate Sir Barrington as a possible guild base. The wary mayor refuses the Wanderers and demands approval from every property owner. A blacksmith offers his support if the party clears his family's monster-occupied iron mine, giving Joe and his companions their first route toward winning the settlement.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Joe's party fights poisonous insects and a metal-boned rock creature in the mine, then prepares a group-powered ritual to find and bury the remaining monster. Tatum reveals that he secretly accelerated Joe's effective level and that Joe must repay the missing experience after reaching level ten. Joe, Bard, and Alexis nearly exhaust themselves creating the taglock ritual, while Aten receives access to Joe's shrine travel network. Bard and Alexis begin a relationship. Aten formally brings Joe's companions into the Wanderers, and the guild uses the shrine route to avoid hostile players while approaching the settlement. When Sir Barrington resists their arrival, Joe's improved inspection ability reveals that the mayor is a magically disguised bear and a divine champion. The mine arrangement triggers a punishment that transforms the settlement into an instant dungeon. The Wanderers receive exclusive access and a limited opportunity to claim the area.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
The transformed settlement is filled with undead hosts wrapped in living wood. Joe's party suffers repeated deaths, and Jackson sacrifices himself by igniting a poison trap so the others can escape. Spiders later kill Alexis, and the transformed Sir Barrington kills Poppy and Joe, ending the attempt. During the failed run Joe gains the kingdom-restricted Psychomancer class, although Ritualist absorbs its benefits. The party returns with a stamina-draining ritual and defeats the transformed blacksmith, ending the dungeon despite more losses. The Wanderers take control of the fortified town. Joe and Poppy then follow Tatum's marker into an unexplored region, where Joe disarms layered ritual protections around a hidden blueprint. It proves to be a Grand Ritual Hall, publicly called a Pathfinder's Hall, capable of revealing class requirements and specialization paths. The information had been deliberately suppressed by groups benefiting from restricted progression knowledge. Joe and Aten agree that the Wanderers will secure and operate the building while Joe retains ritual access. Joe proposes spending his unclaimed divine boon to remove the construction components, though the project would still require an enormous mana contribution. The guild commits to building the hall at its new base.
Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)
Daisy, Joe's newly assigned superior, restrains him and repeatedly uses a command ability while threatening discipline. Joe invokes the guild charter's abuse clause and leaves the Wanderers, costing the guild crucial standing with Ardania. After completing further training at the Mage's College, he decides to return and repair the relationship. Aten suspends Daisy's authority pending an investigation into concealed complaints and accepts Joe back under a contract that gives him autonomy outside the ordinary command structure. Joe also reunites with Tim, the mage-guild leader he knew before the game as Snake. Tim's guild supplies discounted help for future access to the planned artifact. Joe, Tim, and Terra organize almost two hundred ritual positions and begin the component-free construction. The sustained mana draw transforms the site into a vast magical structure with hidden ritual facilities and a central tower. The finished Pathfinder's Hall stores advancement knowledge and improves training throughout its influence. Joe becomes its owner and selects an architect specialization. Because he is the only living member of that specialty, he gains exceptional rarity benefits and control of the hall's concealed ritual workspace.
Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)
Joe dedicates Pathfinder's Hall's main temple to Tatum and directs part of the artifact's resources toward restoring the deity. As Ardania prepares for a major wolfman assault, Lady Spriggan seeks a shrine in the hall. Joe grants her sanctuary, preserving Sir Barrington's human mind and gaining access to plant-based defenses. In return, she provides a map to knowledge that can convert spells into rituals. The route leads Joe into Ardania's prison dungeon while he awaits judgment for possessing the restricted Psychomancer class. Boris rewards Joe's scholarly contribution to the hall by advancing his profession to Arcanologist and granting him a skill-combination gem. In the dungeon, Joe follows the map to a hidden third level and meets the Warden of Souls, an elemental spectre that intends to train and bind him as a replacement jailor. Joe combines his shadow skills into a flawed new class, then tricks the Warden into powering a ritual that confines its essence. The Warden reveals that it was once an investigator murdered for exposing noble crimes. At its request, Joe ends its existence and receives its spellbook, equipment, and the sought-after manual explaining how spell scrolls can become rituals. The dungeon's remaining shades stay contained.
Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)
Joe voluntarily returns for judgment after escaping the prison dungeon. The Queen inspects his status and dismisses the restricted-class case because his shadow powers are presently defensive and untrained, but she requires another hearing if he gains or teaches offensive uses. Joe reunites with his mother, who has entered the game and begun training toward a merchant career. He refuses to provide the guard with a coercive spell and instead studies flawed spellbooks for defensive ritual work. As wolfman forces approach Ardania, Joe corrects the Mass Enchant spell and combines it with Shadow Spike in a large ritual. Terra, Tim, and other contributors activate the design, giving stored weapons a temporary shadow attack. Aten orders mass quantities of arrows treated through the ritual. Reinforcements, the royal army, and Mage's College combatants gather while the Wanderers prepare their defenses. By dawn, Ardania possesses a stock of enchanted ammunition and Joe has demonstrated a practical method for turning corrected spell structures into battlefield-scale ritual effects. The wolfman main force then begins its full assault.
Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)
Joe's enchanted arrows disrupt the first wolfman charge, but enemy shamans weaponize the battlefield's death energy and open breaches. Aten holds one breach with a temporary power, Alexis takes command nearby, and Chad uses her anti-mage arrow to kill the leading shaman and turn the prepared attack back on the invaders. A purple-robed silence mage later blocks Joe's shadow control, allowing a wolfman elite to kill him. During Joe's delayed return, Ardania's king enters the battle as a Battle Tyrant and kills the wolfman warlord in single combat. The warlord's death removes the invaders' racial advantages and sends them into retreat. Apparent human conspirators then detonate a massive blast around the king, and the system announces regicide. Joe survives with a destroyed leg, finds the king's remaining foot, and uses Resurrection to restore him. The king grants Joe crown protection, while the victory makes Joe the leading war contributor and awards him wealth, land, and nobility. Humanity learns that this war was only a tutorial and that two more races will make contact in one month. Joe later locates and kills the silence mage. The system identifies the dead mage as a racial traitor and pardons Joe, but the broader regicide conspiracy remains unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
Ardania survives the main wolfman assault. The human king kills the invading warlord, but apparent human conspirators detonate a blast around him after the victory. Joe survives with severe injuries, finds the king's remaining foot, and resurrects him. The restored king places Joe under crown protection, while Joe receives a noble title, land, and rewards as the leading contributor to the war. Humanity is told that its struggle so far was only a tutorial and that two additional races will make contact in one month. Joe remains the owner and sole living architect-specialist of Pathfinder's Hall, an Arcanologist with conditional royal permission to retain his shadow abilities. Tatum and Lady Spriggan have secure places in the hall's pantheon, and the Wanderers emerge from the war as a kingdom-serving guild. Joe later hunts down and kills the silence mage who enabled his battlefield death. The system identifies the mage as a racial traitor and pardons Joe, but the wider conspiracy behind the attempted regicide remains unresolved. Headshot and the surviving Hardcores also remain an open threat, while Joe's ritual program and his mother's merchant training continue.
