Lee advances to rank four to save her, and Azel manifests, kills Raphael, takes the fatal bloodline curse, and dies after temporarily restraining Lee's unstable rune. Previously: Noah Vines has been living publicly as Vermil Linwick, the magus he killed after arriving in this world. At Arbitage, he teaches Todd, Isabel, and Emily while researching runes with Sunder, which allows him to divide combined runes and rebuild them. Moxie, his partner and fellow professor, was bound to the Torrin family until the death of Evergreen released her. Lee, their demon companion, has become part of the same close group. Their allies include the powerful Silvertide, while Azel remains tied to Lee and Noah's group. Karina, a Linwick shapeshifter once known as Bria, has a complicated history with Noah, and the Linwick and Torrin families remain dangerous powers around the group. Todd is recovering from a severe neck injury, Isabel hides a valuable inherited rune, and Emily does not yet know the full truth about her family or Noah's identity.

Noah, Moxie, and Lee finish their vacation by hunting monsters and gathering runes. Moxie claims Earthen Muster, a perfect Earth Master Rune, while Noah collects the ingredients needed to rebuild his rank-three foundation. Back at Arbitage, three visitors bring new obligations. Karina carries a summons from Jalen, the rank-six Linwick family head, who knows artifacts vanished from the family catacombs. Noah refuses to enter Linwick territory and demands neutral ground instead. Jalen responds by sending an assassin, but Karina kills the attacker before he reaches Noah.
