A biologist nearing completion of his PhD when Earth is integrated into the System. Trapped without weapons in the Forest of the Strong, he relies on field knowledge, observation, and a willingness to adapt while searching for a way out.

Hugo (Antagonist)

Henry White (Antagonist)

The leader of Henry's Fang, the armed faction ruling Volville through intimidation and unequal control of equipment. He is a swordsman with a history of running protection schemes.

Ar'Tazul (Supporting)

An E-grade djinn merchant affiliated with the Merchant Union. He explains the market for System goods and information, gives Jack access to credit, and applies strict commercial rules to every transaction.

Edgar (Supporting)

An unaffiliated fire wizard whose parents were killed by Henry's Fang. He is the only Volville resident to volunteer immediately when Jack asks for help against the faction.

Gan Salin (Antagonist)

One of five Scions and the superior or patron named by Henry White. His connection to Henry's Fang places the conflict in Volville within a larger struggle involving the coming tournament.

Vivi Aragon (Supporting)

The leader of Flame River, one of the few major Earth factions known to have conquered an F-grade dungeon. She is identified as a leading African cultivator before the tournament.

Alexander Petrovic (Supporting)

The leader of Ice Peak, a major faction based in northeastern Europe. He is identified before the tournament as one of Earth's established faction leaders.

John Brown (Protagonist)

Jack's disguised tournament identity, registered with a flip-flop as his weapon and a fabricated Dao. The persona conceals his real appearance, faction, title, and fighting path from the Scions.

Galicia Lonahor (Supporting)

A C-grade Leonin who represents the Animal Kingdom as Earth's planetary overseer. She opens the integration tournament and announces its rules, rewards, and elimination structure.

Dorman Whistles (Supporting)

A level-38 dagger fighter following the Dao of Speed. He wins his opening match before his opponent can draw a weapon, then approaches Jack with an easy familiarity.

Sadaka (Minor)

A Flame River fire cultivator who yields an early match against an Ice Peak opponent after receiving direction from his faction leader.

Rufus Emberheart (Antagonist)

A level-49 Leonin Scion, Planetary Frontrunner 1, and the tournament favorite. His first match ends with his opponent dead from a single attack, prompting Jack to demand enforcement of the rules.

Chen Zexi (Antagonist)

A Shen Group competitor at level 27. Her Dao of Beauty influences the soul, but Jack withstands it and wins their tournament match.

An automated sparring machine in Jack's tournament residence. Enchanted through the Dao of Automation, it can train at several power levels and limits its activity to instruction and practice combat.

The level-49 elite boss of the Forest of the Strong. This territorial apex predator is far stronger than Jack when he first encounters it.
