Shattered Dreams

At his village's skill-selection ceremony, eighteen-year-old Max expects the ordinary Baker skill that will let him marry his fiancee, but the ritual instead grants him a second, hidden skill called Consume - and guild officials, calling him unskilled to conceal the anomaly, try to take him into custody. Freed by his sister and best friend, Max flees into the forest as a fugitive and discovers that Consume lets him absorb health, attributes, and even the skills of anything he kills, turning a boy who wanted a safe, low-risk life into someone who must fight to survive. Adopting the false identity Seth Pendell, he builds a new life as a low-ranked adventurer in a nearby town, even as a guild-led search, a guild official who considers him a danger to divine power, and a separate, powerful being hunting an unidentified boy with a similarly hidden ability all begin closing in.
