In short (whole book)

At his selection, eighteen-year-old Max receives Baker and the forbidden black skill Consume, but the Guild calls him unskilled and takes him away. After escaping, he discovers that Consume blocks ordinary experience while taking health, attributes, and occasional skills from his kills. He becomes the adventurer Seth Pendell, survives dungeon parties, an elven murder attempt, and an undead assault, and struggles against the urge to seek power through human deaths. Guild agents and other factions keep hunting him, while Caleb's recognition of his cover exposes the danger to his family and friends. Max eventually tells his dwarf warrior, elf mage, and dwarf healer companions the truth. They accept him, promise to protect his identity, and help restrain Consume's influence. Still level one, he gains Sonar and Melee Weapon Mastery by fighting stronger monsters. The book ends with his party suspecting that an outside power arranged their meeting, while two secret collaborators confirm that they deliberately supported Max's black skill as part of an unresolved plan.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Max enters the annual selection expecting the Baker skill, an apprenticeship, and marriage to Nancy. Instead, the shard grants him Baker and Consume and turns black. Guild representatives hide the result, publicly label him unskilled, threaten his family, and carry him away. Caleb and Stacy break him out of the transport cart, supply him for flight, and return home so their families will not be implicated. Alone in the forest, Max learns that Consume prevents him from earning normal experience from kills or assignments. In exchange, a death can restore his health, stamina, or mana and may transfer a superior attribute or skill. Goblin fights prove that this healing can save him from grave wounds. After a sheepdog helps him survive another attack, Consume offers him spear training from a slain goblin. Max accepts it, then ends the mortally wounded dog's suffering and unwillingly gains dexterity from the animal. The discovery that Consume takes from allies as readily as enemies unsettles him. He decides to change his appearance, enter another settlement, and build a false identity that will let him earn money and become strong enough to investigate the Guild.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Max improves his fighting technique against goblins, gathers saleable trophies, and enters a mill town under the first name Seth. After shaving his head and inventing a missing-document story, he registers with the Guild as F-rank spear warrior Seth Pendell. His cover gives him lodging, equipment, and access to assignments, although Guild representatives remain nearby. Reading the adventurer guide confirms that ordinary fighters gain levels and improve skills through routes Consume has closed to him. Max concludes that he must defeat stronger opponents and take what his ability can provide. An elf sword-and-shield adventurer offers him a possible place in a future dungeon party. During solo work, Max survives a hobgoblin ambush, gains strength and constitution, and acquires Shield. Greta, a dwarf Guild attendant, processes his trophies and notices potentially useful colored stones among his finds. Elsewhere, two rulers are compelled by a powerful visitor to locate a boy with a black skill. The visitor knows that traces of the target have been removed and demonstrates lethal power while threatening the sisters with punishment for failure. Max does not know that the search has expanded, but the forces pursuing the black-skill holder now extend beyond his home town.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Greta arranges two healing potions for Seth in return for completing a kobold assignment. He first hunts alone, then joins Brutus, an archer, and the healer Miles after resolving a dispute over kill rights. Inside the kobold dungeon, Seth serves as the shield-bearing front line while Brutus supports him and Miles supplies blessings and healing. Consume restores Seth during battle and raises his intelligence, forcing him to explain his unusual recovery. He claims to be a runaway noble with access to an exceptional potion, and the group agrees to keep the supposed secret. After upgrading their equipment and learning the boss's escape rules, Brutus, Miles, and the archer reach level four while Seth remains level one. They enter the boss chamber, where Seth holds the kobold boss while the others attack. When it becomes berserk, Brutus is nearly killed and Miles spends his special daily heal to save him. Seth lands the killing blow, gains strength and constitution, and accepts the offered Berserker skill. He then uses one of his real potions to keep Brutus alive, earning the warrior's declaration of a life debt. The group returns safely with weapons, rings, and other rewards from its first boss victory.

Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)

Berserker gives Seth a short burst of speed and strength while stripping away judgment and self-preservation. Troubled by the danger Brutus faced, he leaves his first group and resumes hunting alone. At a temple, an unidentified woman calls him Max, says he is marked, and warns that several powers seek to kill or use him. Meanwhile, Trina files an official report that Max died despite uncertain remains, while privately suspecting that he escaped. Seth joins the elf leader's established goblin-dungeon party, including healer Lucia, and gains Ice Magic from an enemy caster. A newly arrived elf rogue then isolates him in the boss room and admits that humans have been killed before. Seth turns the boss against the attacker, activates Berserker, kills both the rogue and the boss, and chooses Stealth from Consume's offer. He escapes unseen, shaken by the pleasure and hunger attached to the human death. The innkeeper identifies the attackers as likely anti-human zealots and protects the story that Seth died. A magic-shop owner examines Seth's new bracers, arranges caravan passage, and helps him preserve the rogue's victim list as evidence. Seth leaves town with proof that his assumed name had been selected as a target before the attempted murder.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Seth departs with a merchant caravan. When a broken wheel leaves the camp exposed to eight wolves and a larger ghost wolf, he orders the workers back and fights the pack alone. Berserker and Consume keep him alive through severe injuries, and he stages the use of a potion to conceal how completely he recovers. The caravan leader agrees to keep his role private, while a discouraged former adventurer decides the victory has given him reason to return to that calling. Seth reaches a major trade city, registers his arrival under the Pendell identity, and clears a level-five hobgoblin dungeon with ease. Seeking enemies strong enough to improve him, he buys an enchanted shield and enters a level-ten orc dungeon alone. Early kills yield strength and constitution, but a rare group led by a caster nearly overwhelms him. Seth combines Ice Magic with Berserker to kill the three enemies, taking a deep wound across his back before Consume restores him. The encounter proves that his growing attributes and magical equipment do not make him safe from stronger dungeon threats, even as those same threats remain his only reliable route to further power.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

The Guild promotes Seth to E-rank after his orc-dungeon success. He replaces damaged equipment, studies monster and skill references, and begins preparing more deliberately. Baking at the shop across from his inn reconnects him with his former plans and introduces Amy, the owner's daughter. He then joins a dwarf warrior, an elf mage, and a dwarf healer for a level-fifteen lizardman dungeon. The group has worked together for months, and Seth adds damage, a second shield, Stealth, and newly acquired sword skill. His rapid recovery and bound equipment prompt questions, so he admits that he bypassed formal beginner training and has concealed parts of his history. The companions accept limited honesty and agree to protect what he reveals. With Seth using Stealth to remove casters, the party reaches encounters that had previously stopped it. They delay the boss long enough to prepare, then face two mages, two giant guards, and a dual-sword commander. Seth holds the commander through a long defensive exchange while the mage spends her remaining power on heavy ice and fire attacks. The party wins, and Seth takes the final blow. Consume upgrades his Swordsmanship, while the dungeon rewards the group with new equipment, including swift boots for Seth.

Story so far - through chapter 50 (this book)

Seth helps Amy rise from level two to level eight through repeated orc-dungeon runs and promises to assist her toward level ten. His companions begin to see that his advancement does not follow ordinary rules, but a Guild alarm interrupts further questions: an undead dungeon has released thousands of attackers south of the city. The party joins the defense against zombies, skeletons, and undead wolves. During the fighting, Seth and the dwarf warrior reach several endangered casters. One is fatally wounded and asks Seth to end his suffering. Consume rewards the mercy killing with attributes and Fire Magic, leaving Seth disturbed by how readily the ability's hunger influenced him. When a Shade approaches, the healer persuades nearby adventurers to hold their ground. The elf mage disguises Seth's secret Fire Enchantment as her own spell, and Hannah leads the warriors while Seth repeatedly strikes the creature. Consume resists its attempts to drain his attributes, and Seth survives its sustained attack until a stronger adventurer kills it. His party deflects Hannah's questions and shares the defense reward as equals. Back at the orc dungeon, Seth adds blunt-weapon training. Then Caleb arrives at the inn and recognizes that Seth Pendell is Max, creating a direct breach in the identity that has kept Max alive.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

Caleb tells Max that their town was informed of his death and that his family was devastated. Max admits he received two skills but refuses Caleb's request to join him, fearing the Guild will use old connections to find him. That fear is confirmed when Max captures James, a tracker who followed Caleb. Under interrogation, James says supposedly unskilled people are classified as red, clear, or black and that the council considers each type dangerous. He identifies Max as the rare black type. Max kills James, gains attributes and Dual Wield, and destroys the body. Molly and Macy separately renew their search and plan to exploit Max's friends and family. Another hostile order, however, receives a false report that Seth probably died during the elf party's boss operation; its regional leader drains the surviving reporter's life. In a swamp dungeon, an unexplained internal voice orders Max to consume a slain ogre. When the elf mage reveals her uncommon combined elemental skill and detects his Ice Magic, Max finally tells his current companions the truth. He identifies himself as Max, explains Consume and his permanent level-one status, and asks them to continue calling him Seth. The dwarf warrior, elf mage, and dwarf healer accept him as family, promise to guard the secret, and undertake to keep his pursuit of power from controlling him.

Story so far - through chapter 62 (this book)

With his core party now informed, Max seeks stronger monsters that can raise his attributes while his companions benefit from the experience he cannot receive. Aldrich allows him to join a level-twenty-five-plus party and take selected finishing blows in exchange for helping protect its vulnerable members. During a difficult lizard encounter, Max saves Aldrich and fights a rare red-scaled creature beside the other warrior. He cripples and kills it, gains more physical power, and accepts Sonar, a constant short-range sense that can expose hidden or invisible threats. Aldrich's group credits Max with preventing their deaths and considers its obligation settled through the training and opportunities it gave him. Back with his own companions, Max fights ogres on the rocky second floor of their dungeon. Acquiring axe handling causes four weapon skills to combine into uncommon Melee Weapon Mastery. The party compares its unusual abilities: the elf's combined elemental magic, the dwarf warrior's rare shield skill, the dwarf healer's rare healing magic, and Max's black skill. They suspect a powerful outside force arranged their meeting, and Max believes he has encountered the woman involved. In the final scene, an unidentified sponsor tells a cloaked associate that she spent saved power on Max and obtained better results than expected. The women agree to keep their continuing plan hidden, leaving its purpose and their identities unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Max remains publicly registered as Seth Pendell and is still level one because Consume prevents ordinary experience gains. His dwarf warrior, elf mage, and dwarf healer companions now know that he is Max, understand the nature of Consume, and regard him as family. They intend to advance together while protecting his cover and helping him resist the skill's pressure toward killing people. Max has added Sonar and Melee Weapon Mastery to his abilities and plans to keep pursuing monsters strong enough to improve his attributes. Caleb knows that Seth is Max, but Max keeps him at a distance to reduce the threat to those at home. Guild-linked hunters and Molly and Macy's faction continue looking for Max and may use his friends and family as leverage. The elf-linked hostile order is incorrectly informed that Seth likely died. The party notices that its members' rare and combined skills are too unusually concentrated to seem accidental. A final private meeting confirms that an unknown sponsor spent saved power on Max's black skill and has a cloaked associate helping conceal a larger plan. Their identities, purpose, and earlier failure remain unresolved.
