An eighteen-year-old sheep-farm worker who expects to become a baker and marry Nancy. His selection instead produces two skills and a black result, after which Guild representatives falsely declare him unskilled and take him into custody.

Max's intended wife and a trained baker. Their families have approved the match on the condition that Max completes a baking apprenticeship after his selection.
