In short (whole book)
After a rescue portal collapses, veteran fighter Derek Hunt is stranded beyond his home system and escapes into a world governed by the Great System. He escorts the lost Thomas home, helps survivors of a monster-destroyed village, and discovers that an overflowing level-100 Undying Dungeon is poisoning the forest. His retained strength and new Champion of the Void class let him train Thomas, Rayna, Malorie, and Brandi while concealing how powerful he truly is. When Wallace Gracefall's party attacks the village, Derek kills all six attackers and builds a false account placing their deaths inside the dungeon. Derek's group clears the Undying Dungeon, ending its overflow and earning conspicuous storage rings. He advances to the legendary Legend of the Void, bonds the returned Silvi as a void-rabbit companion, and persuades investigator Bronson that Wallace died to a dungeon monster. Derek, Thomas, Silvi, and Bronson finally reach Torith, while House Gracefall's scrutiny and the village's secrets remain unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Silvi opens a portal so Derek Hunt can retrieve members of an ambushed team. Derek gets Allie and the injured Gerard out, but John and Andrea are dead. The portal collapses before Derek can finish crossing, trapping him in a lightless space beyond his system's reach. He survives an apparently immense period there, retaining his enhanced body even after his system connection fails. When a gigantic creature tears into the darkness, Derek escapes through the breach. He lands in a diseased forest where trying to reach his old system causes severe pain. Derek finds Thomas, a lost twelve-year-old who speaks an unfamiliar language. The local Great System attempts to deal with Derek's former system as an invasion, then enables mutual understanding. Thomas explains that local people normally gain system access after reaching the proper age and making a solo kill. Derek kills a level-53 Forest Wolf that threatens them. The victory unlocks the Great System, advances him to level 5, and grants the Giant Slayer achievement. His status has reset to level 0 before the kill, but the physical power accumulated in his former world remains, giving him an exceptional starting position in the new system.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Derek restores his dormant Meditation by purchasing its local equivalent, proving that compatible abilities from his former system can merge into the Great System. As he escorts Thomas toward home, they find increasingly powerful animals near the edge of the diseased forest, including a bear in the process of becoming undying. Thomas says earlier investigators sent by House Torith found no cause for the spreading corruption. Elsewhere, a large monster horde destroys Leon's village. Brandi escapes with the civilians while defenders hold the gate. When wolves overtake the refugees, Sana, Malorie, and Marshall stay behind to delay them. Derek arrives with Thomas, kills the alpha and two other wolves, and enables the three adults to survive. He then agrees to investigate the attacked village. Derek clears the remaining beasts from the settlement and finds only two living defenders, Chief Leon and the mortally wounded Travis. A resurrection potion could save Travis, but Derek refuses to spend his last one. He instead gives Leon a health potion and retrieves Malorie and Brandi so the family can say farewell. The village is destroyed, the survivors are displaced, and the abnormal monster movement now presents a direct threat to nearby settlements.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
After reaching level 10, Derek chooses the Epic growth class Champion of the Void. Its abilities let him channel void energy and open a rupture, but the creature he calls Asher emerges as an enemy rather than a summon. Derek survives its attacks by strengthening his defenses, merging dormant weapon skills into Heavy Weapons Mastery, and directing void energy through his glaive. He kills the beast, earns an achievement for defeating an entity outside the Great System, and conceals the victory by telling the refugees it escaped. Travis dies during the flight from the ruined village. Derek preserves his body, reunites the scattered refugees, and escorts them to Thomas's home. Brandi continues developing Leatherworking, while Thomas returns to his grandparents. Rayna, the village chief, accepts Leon's survivors into her community. Derek reports that high-level monsters are being pushed toward the forest edge and that diseased creatures are transforming into undying forms. He proposes that an undiscovered undying dungeon has entered a severe overflow, spreading corruption and displacing other beasts. Richard, Thomas's grandfather and the village head trader, considers the theory plausible. Rayna plans to send Davis and hunters toward Torith with a warning. Derek returns Travis's body to his family, gives Brandi collected hides, and asks Thomas to postpone unlocking the Great System until Derek returns.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
Derek improves his defenses and enters the forest to train. An aggressive horned rabbit begins following him and fighting nearby creatures. At the center of the blight he discovers the level-100 Undying Dungeon in extreme overflow. After surviving a level-115 Acidic Ghoul, he names the rabbit Silvi and returns to the village. Thomas has waited beyond his thirteenth birthday so Derek can supervise his system awakening. Derek helps him kill a creature above level 50, earning Thomas extra skill points, and invites him to travel under strict conditions. Rayna and the village leaders learn the dungeon's level and conclude that outside help is needed. Derek trains Rayna's wind skills and tests Thomas with different weapons. Thomas nevertheless selects Rogue because his missing father used daggers, despite showing greater talent with swords and spears. After a breach of trust, Thomas takes a binding Great System oath never to reveal Derek's secrets. Derek then takes Thomas into a stable level-25 insect dungeon. Thomas suffers repeated injuries but rises from level 10 to 17 and realizes Rogue does not suit his preferred combat range. Together they defeat the Zephyr Mantis and complete the dungeon. Thomas receives Haste, Derek receives Cure Toxin, and they head home with Thomas planning to change classes later.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Derek and Thomas return from the insect dungeon to find their village deserted after another attack. Brandi is unconscious, Malorie is critically wounded, Davis is dead, and Rayna is about to be executed by a high-level House Gracefall party. Derek stops the execution and kills all six attackers, including the noble leading them. His healing stabilizes Malorie and Rayna, but killing members of a noble house creates a threat that strength alone cannot immediately resolve. The attackers had tried to seize valuable hides from Brandi and Malorie. Rayna intervened, and Davis died defending her. Derek stores the attackers' bodies and advances beyond level 25, upgrading Champion of the Void and gaining Void Shift and Void Sense. To contain the political danger, Derek requires Rayna, Malorie, and Brandi to swear binding Great System oaths protecting his secrets. Richard and Leon refuse because they will not keep such matters from Delilah and Sana. The village agrees on a false account in which the Gracefall party entered the level-100 Undying Dungeon and died. Their survival now depends on making that explanation credible before House Gracefall investigates the missing noble.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
Derek takes Thomas, Rayna, Malorie, and Brandi through a level-50 beast dungeon to strengthen them and prepare the Gracefall cover story. Thomas replaces Rogue with the rare Soul Spear class, and Malorie gains the growth staff class Ohm's Fury. Derek kills the wind-wolf boss Canis Cyclonus after first using Void Shift in battle. The rewards include a resurrection scroll for Malorie, Chain Strike for Rayna, and a beast-contract scroll that Brandi gives Derek for Silvi. The group clears several more dungeons while keeping the campaign secret. House Gracefall confirms through the Sybil Maria that its missing noble is dead and sends Bronson to investigate within a month. Meanwhile, Derek leads his group into the overflowing Undying Dungeon. He shelters the others in a tomb while destroying waves of level-100 skeletons and vampire bats. At level 50, Champion of the Void upgrades into the legendary growth class Legend of the Void, permanently turning his eyes purple and granting more abilities. Derek then destroys level-110 ghouls and a lich with a phylactery. The first clear ends the extreme overflow, raises him to level 76, and gives every participant two large storage rings as doubled rewards. The rings are valuable evidence of the clear, so Derek begins arranging the dungeon scene to support the village's false account of the Gracefall party's fate.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
Outside the stabilized Undying Dungeon, Derek stages Wallace Gracefall's corpse and supplies to suggest death from an acidic ghoul. Brandi chooses All Smith, a rare growth class covering many crafting and gathering disciplines, and is warned to conceal it. Rayna upgrades to Zephyr's Gale. When Bronson reaches the village, Derek agrees to guide him to the body in exchange for help navigating Torith. Bronson accepts the apparent dungeon death after examining the scene, although his encounter with an escaped toxic ghoul confirms that the area remains dangerous. Silvi returns and is confirmed as the horned rabbit that travelled with Derek. He uses Brandi's contract scroll to bond her. She becomes a void rabbit with a legendary companion class, mental speech, void abilities, and a large share of Derek's stats. Her death would damage his soul. Derek warns Bronson not to bring House Gracefall against the village. Bronson decides Derek is the greater concern and plans to report that judgment. Rayna remains to protect the village, whose residents must hide Brandi's class and their storage rings. Thomas chooses to leave his grandparents and continue training under Derek's protection. During the journey, Derek has him kill people for the first time in two bandit encounters. Bronson destroys a bandit camp and frees its captives. After two weeks, Derek, Thomas, Silvi, and Bronson arrive in Torith. House Gracefall's scrutiny remains active despite the successful deception.
How does it end? (ending)
Derek completes the first clear of the Undying Dungeon, destroys its lich, and stops the extreme overflow behind the forest crisis. The victory raises him to level 76 after his class becomes the legendary Legend of the Void, while every participant receives two valuable storage rings. He stages Wallace Gracefall's body as the victim of an acidic dungeon creature. Bronson accepts the physical explanation, but judges Derek to be exceptionally dangerous and intends to report to House Gracefall. Rayna remains chief of the surviving village, supported by Leon, Sana, Richard, Delilah, Malorie, Brandi, and the resettled refugees. They must hide the storage rings, Derek's abilities, and Brandi's broad All Smith class. Derek hopes to create a safer future for Brandi and Malorie, while Rayna may join him if the village is secured or lost to outside control. Derek bonds Silvi, giving her a legendary void-companion class and tying her survival to his soul. Thomas chooses advancement over safety and leaves his grandparents under Derek's protection. After two weeks on the road, Derek, Thomas, Silvi, and Bronson arrive in Torith.
