The Nome King (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The bitter ruler of the Nomes beneath the earth. Still angry over his earlier defeat by Ozma and Dorothy, he wants his Magic Belt back and begins planning to conquer Oz by attacking from below.

Uncle Henry (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Dorothy's hardworking uncle in Kansas. A mortgage now threatens the farm he rebuilt after the cyclone, leaving him ashamed that years of labor may end without a home for the family.

Aunt Em (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Dorothy's loving aunt, whose life in Kansas has been shaped by hard work and worry. She faces the loss of the farm with Uncle Henry and is cautious about Dorothy's promise of a secure life in fairyland.

Dorothy Gale (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 2

A Kansas girl whose repeated adventures have made her a friend of Ozma and many inhabitants of Oz. Learning that the family farm will be lost, she hopes at last to bring Aunt Em and Uncle Henry into the safety of Oz.

Ozma (Supporting)

The young ruler of Oz and Dorothy's close friend. She offers Dorothy's family a permanent home in the Emerald City and tries to govern her peaceful country without fear or cruelty.

Guph (Antagonist)

The Nome King's highest general, chosen to organize the invasion of Oz. Clever, boastful, and untrustworthy, he proposes a tunnel beneath the Deadly Desert and seeks powerful allies for the attack.

Chief Whimsie (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 6

The immense leader of the Whimsies, whose people wear large pasteboard heads because their natural heads are very small. He agrees to join Guph's invasion in hope of taking part of Oz.

The Cowardly Lion (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A huge but courteous beast who is one of Dorothy's oldest friends. Aunt Em initially fears him, but his gentle conduct soon shows that his alarming appearance does not make him dangerous to friends.

Grand Gallipoot (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 8

The proud, enormous ruler of the Growleywogs. He offers his fierce warriors to Guph's alliance but expects his people, not the Nomes, to claim the richest rewards after victory.

The Woggle-Bug (Minor)

Also known as Professor Woggle-Bug

First appears in chapter 9

An Highly Magnified and thoroughly educated insect who runs Oz's college. He welcomes Uncle Henry and Aunt Em during their tour and proudly explains the unusual education offered there.

The First and Foremost (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 11

The mysterious leader of the Phanfasms, powerful shape-changing spirits whom even Guph finds frightening. He permits the alliance because the Phanfasms enjoy causing harm and confusion.

The Wizard (Supporting)

Also known as The Wizard of Oz

First appears in chapter 14

Dorothy's old friend, now living in the Emerald City and studying real magic. He accompanies Dorothy and Toto on a tour of Oz's remarkable communities.

Toto (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 14

Dorothy's small black dog. In Oz he can speak if he chooses, though he generally remains happiest following Dorothy and investigating each new place with her.

The Scarecrow (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 25

Dorothy's old companion, made of straw and valued for his unusual wisdom. When Oz faces an invading army too powerful to defeat by force, he searches for a peaceful plan that can protect everyone.
