The Emerald City of Oz recap

When Uncle Henry's mortgaged Kansas farm is about to be lost, Ozma brings Dorothy, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry to live permanently in the Emerald City. While the newcomers tour Oz's many curious settlements, the vengeful Nome King orders General Guph to dig beneath the Deadly Desert and recruit the Whimsies, Growleywogs, and Phanfasms for an invasion. Ozma learns of the threat but refuses to fight a deadly battle. Instead, the Scarecrow arranges for the attackers to drink enchanted water from the Forbidden Fountain. They forget their wicked purpose and are sent peacefully home. Glinda then makes Oz invisible and closes it to the outside world. Dorothy and her family remain safely with their friends, while the Nome King's attempt to conquer Oz ends without bloodshed.

Dorothy Gale has traveled repeatedly between Kansas and Oz, becoming the close friend of Ozma, the country's young ruler. Dorothy and her companions once defeated the Nome King and took his powerful Magic Belt. The belt now belongs to Ozma, while Dorothy still lives in Kansas with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry and visits Oz only through magic.

The Nome King remains furious that Dorothy and Ozma defeated him and carried away his Magic Belt. He appoints Guph to prepare an invasion of Oz through a tunnel under the Deadly Desert. In Kansas, Uncle Henry reveals that the bank will take the mortgaged farm, leaving the family without a home. Dorothy asks Ozma for help, and Ozma brings Dorothy, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry to the Emerald City as permanent residents. While Dorothy's family begins meeting the strange but friendly citizens of Oz, Guph recruits the Whimsies, whose small natural heads are hidden inside enormous false ones, to join the Nome army.

Aunt Em overcomes her fear of the Cowardly Lion, and she and Uncle Henry tour Oz, including the Woggle-Bug's unusual college. Guph continues gathering dangerous allies. The proud Growleywogs agree to fight but secretly intend to take Oz for themselves. The shape-changing Phanfasms also join, frightening even the Nome general; they too plan to betray their partners after the conquest. Guph reports success to the Nome King while work on the underground tunnel continues. Elsewhere, Dorothy and the Wizard set out to visit more of Oz, unaware of the army preparing beneath the desert.

Dorothy, the Wizard, and their companions wander among Oz's curious settlements. They meet people who make long, useless speeches, the paper Cuttenclips, the mixed-up Fuddles, the kitchen-tool citizens of Utensia, and the edible inhabitants of Bunbury. In Bunnybury, a town built for rabbits, Dorothy helps its king understand that royal duties and a comfortable home matter more than running away. The travelers later pass the anxious Flutterbudgets. As they return, the Tin Woodman brings news that a vast hostile army is approaching from beneath the country, and Ozma's peaceful kingdom prepares for the danger.

Ozma learns the full invasion plan but refuses to save Oz through slaughter. The Scarecrow proposes using the enchanted water of the Forbidden Fountain, which removes the memories of anyone who drinks it. The Nome King, Guph, and their allied Whimsies, Growleywogs, and Phanfasms march through the completed tunnel into the Emerald City. Thirsty from the journey, they drink from the fountain and forget their identities, grudges, and plans. Ozma sends the now harmless invaders home. To prevent another attack, Glinda makes Oz invisible and closes its borders to the outside world. Dorothy, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry remain in the Emerald City, where the threatened loss of their Kansas farm can no longer separate the family or leave them homeless.

Ozma learns that the Nome King and his allies are about to enter Oz through their completed tunnel, but she refuses to answer invasion with killing. The Scarecrow devises a defense using the Forbidden Fountain, whose enchanted water removes the drinker's memories. The invaders emerge in the Emerald City, drink, and forget their anger, their identities, and their plan of conquest. Ozma treats them kindly and sends the harmless armies home, with the transformed alliance no longer threatening her people. Glinda then uses magic to make Oz invisible and unreachable to the outside world, preventing future armies or ordinary visitors from finding it. Dorothy, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry remain secure in the Emerald City as permanent residents. Before communication closes, Dorothy sends one final message explaining that Oz will no longer be open to reports from the outside world.
