In short (whole book)

Toren struggles toward a protective purpose while trapped in Liscor's dungeon, and Ilvriss quietly prepares to fight a surviving necromancer who has begun mentoring Pisces. Abroad, the Empress of Beasts surrenders rather than sacrifice her people, losing her realm and becoming the magus-crafter's prisoner while her general escapes with an army. Flos promises eventual restoration and averts war with Kelt through a provisional food-for-nonaggression pact. Niers Astoragon learns that dragons remain hidden on Izril and suspects a connection between his chess opponent and Liscor. Wistram mages abduct Pisces and the Horns, but Erin's household and allies defeat them. Pisces admits that he is Pisces Jilnet and that his attempted tomb theft caused deaths at Wistram. The Horns stand by him, while Wistram leaves him under a large bounty and marks Erin as another target.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Erin Solstice, an innkeeper from Earth, established the Wandering Inn near Liscor and gathered an unusual household around it. Mrsha lives there under the care of Erin and Lyonette, while the Goblin survivor Numbtongue is also protected at the inn. The adventuring team known as the Horns includes the necromancer Pisces, the half-elf ice mage Ceria Springwalker, Yvlon, and the Antinium Ksmvr. Calruz, a Minotaur commander, is imprisoned under Watch Captain Zevara's authority. These relationships leave the inn closely tied to Liscor's civic life, its adventurers, and people whom other powers regard with suspicion.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

Toren is trapped in Liscor's dungeon, where abundant mana repairs his damaged undead body but the surface cannot sustain him. His efforts to command other undead fail against stronger creatures, yet he begins protecting living explorers and recognizes his regret over abandoning Erin. Adventurers know his masked female form only as a helpful dungeon warrior. After an undead assault, they cremate the zombie Toren had dressed to resemble Erin and mistake his attachment for grief. Liscor's newly seated council begins rent, trade, Watch, and Antinium reforms. Erin receives citizenship, pays reduced back taxes, and learns that Ilvriss's plain family ring carries an enchantment that discourages notice. In Salazsar, Ilvriss secretly shelters a surviving Pallasian captain and starts assembling an elite force against the necromancer under the cover of anti-Antinium preparations. Pisces privately develops a large bone construct and receives instruction through an undead rat. His mentor is an undead former human archmage with a hidden castle, distant puppets, Chosen servants, and an army. After studying life at the inn through the rat, the necromancer secretly completes Pisces's unfinished behemoth as a test that Pisces has not yet recognized.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

A coalition closes around the capital of the beast-taming empire after destroying its elite defenders. The Empress of Beasts asks Flos to transform her people into his war units for a suicidal counterattack. He refuses and tells her to survive until he can restore her homeland. She marches her remaining people out, then surrenders unconditionally to the magus-crafter rather than spend their lives in a final battle. The magus-crafter keeps the Empress as a political prisoner and prevents rival claimants from taking her. Coalition states partition the conquered realm, while its people face occupation, displacement, or enslavement. The Empress's general uses the surrender to escape north with soldiers and civilians, preserving resistance in the Kaleel Steppes. Elsewhere, the Quarass of Germina confirms that Trey and Therese came from another world and allies her country with Flos. She takes Trey to negotiate with Kelt's undead king. Trey's explanations of Earth and his smartphone gain the king's interest. Kelt and Rhyme avert immediate war with a provisional agreement: Kelt will supply food for eight years, while Flos will swear a blood oath never to take arms against Kelt, with further terms left for negotiation.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

Niers Astoragon reveals that an advanced logistics assignment was a live deception exercise and that the students who failed must join a real long-distance march. Two successful students claim private questions from him, itself another test of whether they will challenge a superior. Niers explains that he sometimes releases secrets to disrupt the political balance maintained by the continent's great mercenary companies. A human lord asks for information that could protect his family from a damaging marriage arrangement. The head of Niers's company later erases his memory of the answer and destroys his planned warning, while Niers redirects him toward a possible expedition to dangerous, unexplored sea sites. A lizardfolk strategist student asks about a former student's intended question and learns that at least two dragons are living unrecognized on Izril. Niers fears this knowledge may place her in danger. He also suspects that his mysterious chess opponent is connected to a young woman and an inn in Liscor, but wants to locate certain humans before attempting contact.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

Selys helps Pisces shop for portable protections and confronts him about his deliberate rudeness. He apologizes, adjusts his conduct, and gives practical advice about protecting and recovering her valuables. Soon afterward, five Wistram mages isolate them in the street. The mages identify Pisces as a wanted former academy member, defeat him, and imprison him in a Silent Box. The same team confronts Ceria and attacks when the Horns and nearby adventurers resist. Ceria, Yvlon, and Ksmvr are subdued and confined with Pisces, while the mages conceal the disturbance and acknowledge that they never consulted Liscor's Watch. Selys is left temporarily impaired by magic. At the Wandering Inn, the mages recognize Erin as a person from Earth through her references to food. Their leader says Wistram has located other arrivals from Earth and offers Erin the prospect of meeting them and finding a route home. At this point the Horns remain captive, and the Wistram team is also interested in the inn's magical door.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Mrsha smells the captives' blood on the Wistram mages and exposes their deception. Erin attacks after they confirm that they seized her friends. The Horns, other adventurers, Relc, and Numbtongue join the fight, break open the magical prison, and defeat the five mages. Pisces is freed alive but badly beaten, while Yvlon and Ksmvr also require treatment. Zevara arrests the Wistram team for assault, illicit magic, and attempted abduction. Wistram retaliates with a 2,000-gold bounty and a hostile account of Pisces's past. The accusations strain the Horns until Pisces apologizes and tells them the truth. He identifies himself as Pisces Jilnet, explains that he fled a common-born upbringing in Terandria, and admits that his necromancy and attempted tomb theft caused the fatal incident at Wistram. He accepts responsibility but refuses to surrender to the academy. The Horns reconcile and promise not to abandon him. One Wistram mage admits that he altered Selys's mind under his leader's orders. The Wistram group leaves the inn, but its leader remains determined to capture Pisces and Erin. Calruz stays imprisoned under increased security, and conflict between Wistram and Liscor remains unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

The Empress of Beasts survives by surrendering and remains a political prisoner of the magus-crafter as coalition powers divide her former realm. Her general escapes north with soldiers and civilians, preserving an armed resistance, and Flos still owes the Empress the restoration he promised. Immediate war between Kelt and Rhyme is avoided through a provisional exchange of grain for Flos's blood oath of nonaggression. In Liscor, Wistram's attempt to seize Pisces and the Horns ends in defeat and arrest. Pisces is freed and treated, then acknowledges his full name, common-born past, and responsibility for the fatal tomb incident at Wistram. The Horns remain united around him. Wistram's leader departs determined to capture both Pisces and Erin, and a large bounty leaves their allies exposed. Toren remains concealed in the dungeon, Ilvriss's anti-necromancer force is still forming, and the hidden necromancer continues to observe the inn and test Pisces from afar.
