Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Jim dies on Earth and awakens inside a character-creation system, where he refuses to surrender his memories. His racial result grants Unbound, a unique trait that ignores many level requirements. When the beings managing the process try to restrain and alter him, the chamber collapses and carries them into a void. Jim then arrives on Ordinal beside a demon he names Shart. Their souls are linked, but Jim's accidental victory reduces Shart from a powerful elder to rank one and makes Jim the stronger partner. Shart needs him to open a demon door, while separation causes both of them pain. Jim begins as a poorly equipped Warrior and survives wolves, injury, and a hostile goblin while learning how the realm's skills operate. Unbound allows him to add Rogue without losing Warrior, an outcome Shart considers impossible. After acquiring crude clothing and weapons, Jim reaches an abandoned beginner settlement occupied by tribal goblins. He clears it and claims it as founder and mayor, restoring a magical barrier that destroys mounted goblins attempting to enter. The settlement offers immediate safety, but leaving it unoccupied would bring the barrier down.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Jim discovers that nearly every building in his settlement is ruined. Its only listed resident is Truman Masterbrook, a legendary figure trapped as stone in the church by a demonic curse. Jim learns enough curse breaking to identify the problem but cannot meet its enormous mana cost. He improves his equipment, then leaves after receiving a quest to rescue human captives. Jim infiltrates a goblin camp and frees AvaSophia and her children, JoeClarance and EveSophia. He defeats an elite shadow goblin by drawing it through his traps, but AvaSophia remains suspicious of his motives. During their return, Shart describes the Dark Overlord as a dangerous godling, while AvaSophia explains that King Har Charles's campaign displaced her family. Goblin riders and a shaman pursue them to the barrier. JoeClarance accidentally disables the protection, but Jim deceives the attackers long enough to kill the shaman before collapsing from exhaustion and a mana crash. Once recovered, Jim gives AvaSophia Creek House and its fields, making the family permanent citizens. She asks for an animal to plow the land. Jim also begins restoring the settlement's forge, developing magical abilities, and preparing for the continuing goblin threat.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Two goblin spellcasters ambush Jim during a wolf hunt. He escapes them badly wounded and learns that they are the Weird Sisters, champions whose survival strengthens the local goblin army. Soon afterward, Jim encounters Kappa, the former shaman's warg. Kappa can resist goblin control and agrees to plow and hunt for AvaSophia's household in exchange for shelter and food. With that need settled, Jim turns toward Western Gate Fortress, where valley residents are being held. Jim ambushes mounted patrols, then enters the fortress and kills its garrison while freeing the prisoners. Fenris, a warden, and Solita, a hunter, help prepare for the goblin warg commander's return. Shart converts one of Jim's governing perks into an enhanced command ability, allowing Jim to organize the defenders with Fenris as his deputy and Solita commanding the archers. When the mounted force attacks, Jim joins Fenris in the breached courtyard while Solita uses burning oil to disrupt the charge. Jim brings down the commander's mount and prevents the wounded commander from escaping. An arrow kills the commander, releasing the surviving wargs from his control. The battle is won, but Jim collapses with severe wounds and almost no mana.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Jim wakes after the fortress battle with only a small fraction of his health. Jarra, the refugees' healer, treats him and helps direct the survivors. War, lost supplies, and an uncertain route make their planned journey to a river city untenable, so Jim offers them a defensible home in the valley. Jarra organizes 86 refugees and three wagons for the trip. Before leaving, Jim advances as both Warrior and Rogue and salvages useful equipment from the dead goblin commander. Shart also admits the full danger of his proposed demon door: once it opens, he intends to overwrite Jim and use Jim's soul against the Dark Overlord. Jim continues to refuse. The refugees reach Jim's damaged settlement and are astonished that its magical barrier still works. Jim reveals that he is mayor, admits them through the protection, and registers them as residents. Fenris asks Jim to help find three relatives believed captured in the valley. When the two men visit Creek House before beginning the search, Fenris finds AvaSophia, JoeClarance, and EveSophia already safe there with Kappa. The reunion resolves the immediate family search, and the refugees are established as residents behind the settlement's barrier.
