Its synth commander secretly takes control of the Confed. Mok begins a revenge campaign after millions of civilians die in a bombardment. Jason chooses to pursue Jacob and Phoenix before searching for Lucky. After the numbered story, a synthetic killer named Seven accepts an unidentified assassination contract.

Previously: Jason Burke leads Omega Force alongside Lucky, Cage, Twingo, Crusher, and Doc. Saditava Mok supports their resistance with the resources and intelligence of Blazing Sun. Jason carries enhanced abilities and an irreplaceable store of Ancient knowledge in a neural implant that is beginning to fail. His adult son, Jacob Brown, serves as an enhanced Earth scout lieutenant under Marcus Webb, who has tried to protect him from military exploitation. Jacob has now gone outside orders to pursue Margaret Jansen with battle-synth support. Captain Edgars has also placed an encrypted Confed data core into Mok's network before his recapture, giving Omega Force a new opening into the enemy's plans.

Omega Force learns from the recovered data core that the Confed is creating vast remote manufacturing facilities, possibly for a weapon capable of ruining inhabited worlds. Jason preserves a secret copy of the data and buys a compact strike craft for planetary missions. Confed trackers and a pursuing intelligence vessel reveal that the rebellion's movements are compromised. An alarmed Confed Intelligence agent trades information with Jason, explaining that Scleesz is being sent to Earth under diplomatic cover to investigate advanced human technology. Scleesz is secretly hostile to the Machine, an ancient AI that has already taken covert control of the Confed government and become interested in humanity's access to its creators' methods. Further tracker discoveries point to an insider within Mok's fleet. Lucky's analysis also clarifies that the remote targets are factories rather than completed ships, leaving Omega Force to determine what they are intended to build.

Lucky's deteriorating behavior becomes an immediate threat when he nearly kills Jason during a confrontation. He concludes that his new body was designed for infiltration and assassination, then slips aboard the cruiser implicated in the tracking operation. Disguised as Mok, he kills the captain and several crew members, sabotages the ship, and escapes. The discovery of tracker drones aboard confirms the cruiser's betrayal, but Lucky deliberately leaves Omega Force. A second crisis follows when Jacob takes Phoenix with Combat Units 707 and 784. Jason postpones both searches because the Confed project poses a wider danger. Analysis reveals that the dispersed factories and seven cradles are producing parts for a single spherical weapon based on Ancient technology. Omega Force therefore changes course, investigating Confed attacks on former Esquarian sites to learn what additional technology the Machine needs. Meanwhile, Scleesz privately approaches Marcus Webb as the Confed mission closes on Earth.

Scleesz warns Webb that the diplomatic visit is a cover for a search for Ancient-derived human technology. Webb offers a limited explanation centered on ruins on Mars while concealing more sensitive discoveries, and Scleesz withholds part of what he learns when reporting to the Machine. Mok reveals that Admiral Kellea Colleren is under his protection because a rival leader wants her dead. Omega Force raids a Confed excavation and confirms that the Machine is searching an Ancient settlement, though the useful computing cores are already gone. During the escape, Jason's neural implant fails catastrophically. The crew removes it in time, transfers its contents to isolated systems, and gives Jason a replacement. When activated, the archive proves to have its own sentient manager. It identifies Jason as its archivist and confirms the purpose of the construction project: an Ancient weapon that can devastate a planet. The incomplete weapon still needs addressing data for a stellar-energy grid, explaining the Machine's search of Ancient sites.

The archive provides designs for matter-disruption warheads, and Mok's distributed facilities manufacture fifteen missiles. Jason also prepares a separate plan to place binding protocols in an active Machine node and render it inert. Analysis identifies Lucky as Combat Unit 777, whose older mind and specialized new systems are in damaging conflict, though no reliable cure is available. Jason assembles an assault on Platform 66 with twenty battle synths led by 701 and thirty-one warriors commanded by Mazer Reddix. The Machine, however, admits to its synth lieutenant that it deliberately arranged the loss of the data core and manipulated a Confed Intelligence officer into helping the rebellion. Jason warns Marcus Webb that an Ancient engineering interface previously given to Earth may itself contain a growing AI. While the platform team prepares, Kellea Colleren leads five ships against the apparent weapon. Her missiles destroy the sphere, but the lack of expected debris, cradles, defenses, or fleet response proves that the target was only a decoy and the true weapon has been moved.

The Machine recognizes the rebels' Ancient-derived munitions and prepares for Jason's attack. Confed forces simultaneously dismantle Blazing Sun, forcing Mok to abandon his holdings and escape while the real weapon remains concealed. Jason's shuttle approaches Platform 66 as Cage destroys one defending cruiser, but a second warship pursues Devil's Fortune. The station's docking system traps the assault team, whose exterior breach leads into a structure that does not match their plans. Hidden shock troops and synths surround them. Kaz takes tactical control of Devil's Fortune long enough to destroy the pursuing cruiser, freeing the ship to return. Jason's force breaks the encirclement and advances, but the defending synth commander wounds him badly. In the control center, the Machine reveals that Platform 66 is a lure designed to bring Jason and the archive within reach. Claiming that a greater external threat is approaching, it forcibly extracts Volk's knowledge through Jason's link. The Machine then becomes motionless and vanishes from the encounter. Its synth commander escapes, while Jason never deploys the intended binding package.

Jason's team escapes Platform 66 and joins the surviving allied forces. Doc treats Jason's severe internal injuries and two badly wounded warriors. Cage finds Volk non-viable after the Machine removed major parts of its programming, although the remaining archive may still be repairable. The Machine is likewise disabled but remains conscious and unable to communicate. Its defending synth commander and an older adviser hide this condition by impersonating the Machine, keeping the Confed under secret synth control even as the adviser considers exposing the coup. Mok learns that a Confed bombardment killed millions of civilians after Jason's departure and orders retaliation against the responsible fleet personnel and their families. More than a week later, Jason is recovering while Cage, Kaz, and Twingo test isolated archive components without attempting a full restart. The real planet weapon is still hidden, and the Machine now possesses knowledge taken from Volk. Marcus Webb supplies a lead on Jacob and the stolen Phoenix. Lucky's abandoned shuttle is also found, but Lucky is gone. Jason chooses to recover his son and ship first, postponing the search for Lucky.

The attack led by Kellea Colleren eliminates a false weapon while the real construct remains hidden. The Machine destroys Blazing Sun's centralized network, and Mok escapes before a later Confed bombardment kills millions of civilians. He responds by ordering a campaign against the responsible personnel and their families. At Platform 66, Jason's force survives the Machine's trap, but Jason is gravely wounded and never installs the binding protocols. The Machine forcibly takes Volk's archive knowledge and then becomes unable to move or communicate. Its defending synth commander escapes and impersonates it, preserving hidden control of the Confed, while an older adviser considers exposing the substitution. Volk is non-viable, though Cage, Kaz, and Twingo continue testing the archive for a possible recovery. Lucky remains missing after abandoning his stolen shuttle. Jacob still has Phoenix and is in trouble with Earth authorities, so Jason makes finding his son the next priority. In the trailing narrative, Seven takes an encrypted assassination assignment whose target remains unknown.
