In short (whole book)
Jake clears the remaining Beast Lord dungeons, defeats William, and rejects the fate that expected him to die before the tutorial's end. Using revenge weapons left by the Beast Lords, poison, and the Great White Stag's unstable core shard, he kills the far stronger King of the Forest and finishes as the sole survivor recognized by the system. After training with the Malefic Viper and claiming dormant true blood without surrendering his independence, Jake returns to a transformed Earth. He reconciles partially with Jacob, learns his family is alive, claims a Pylon of Civilization, and hides it in a forest valley. Miranda takes charge of the new settlement while Hank, Mark, and Louise begin building it. Jake survives an encounter with the D-grade fungal ruler of an underground biodome, chooses wings at his next profession milestone, and ends the book learning to fly from a level-90 hawk.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Jake Thayne entered a deadly tutorial and developed into a formidable hunter and poison alchemist associated with the Malefic Viper. He became separated from former coworkers including Jacob, Bertram, and Casper as the tutorial's survivors divided into different paths.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Jake delays his next dungeon long enough to advance his alchemy and gain Scales of the Malefic Viper, then enters the Lucenti Plains. He studies its herd movements, clears the outer groups, and prepares an attack on the Great White Stag and its three white does. After killing the attendants, Jake discovers that the central pond and the outer ponds form a light-powered defensive network. He corrupts that network with poison and his own blood, causing a destructive collapse that injures both combatants. When the stag uses the remnants of its herd for one final attack, Moment of the Primal Hunter gives Jake the opening to evade it. He forces the exhausted level-93 stag into the poisoned pond and kills it, completing the dungeon. Elsewhere, Jacob advances as an Augur of Hope, preserves the willing souls of his followers, and appoints Bertram as a guardian whose life is bound to his own.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Jake recovers the unstable Corrupted Moon Core Shard from the Great White Stag and enters the Forgotten Sewers. Dense dark mana initially blinds him and disrupts his perception, but he adapts, learns to manipulate that affinity, and navigates the shifting maze. After destroying a controlled mole-rat swarm, he takes Descending Dark Fang and advances toward the nest. The armored Nest Watcher defends the final incubator with dark mana and a suppressive domain. Jake survives by closing into melee, breaking its leg, and allowing poison to finish the work. Before dying, the Nest Watcher asks him to kill the King of the Forest and leaves a one-use curse charged with its resentment. Jake clears the dungeon with new armor and three Beast Lords defeated. Meanwhile, William apparently kills Bertram and Jacob, but Jacob revives outside the tutorial through a one-use ability and restores Bertram. The pair enter Holy Church training under Inara's supervision.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
William clears another dungeon and confronts Jake as the last visible rival. After William claims responsibility for the camp's deaths, Jake overwhelms and kills him. A white-haired primordial takes the body after the Malefic Viper secures a favor in exchange, and the Viper tells Jake that Jacob, Bertram, and Casper still exist. He also explains that the expected course of fate had Jake dying early, William becoming the primordial's disciple, and Jacob serving the Holy Mother. Jake's survival disrupted that forecast, and he commits to following his own choices despite a warning that he is not fated to defeat the forest king. The primordial revives William once and offers him discipleship. Jake scavenges equipment, enters the Valley of Tusks, and escapes its boar horde by inventing a dangerous stamina technique. During exhausted sleep, he remembers his parents Robert and Deborah, his brother Caleb, and Caleb's pregnant wife Maya. Their unknown fate becomes a central reason to return home.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
Jake discovers that the boars drink from an earth-mana lake and develops a toxin that can spread through its magical source. The contaminated water blinds and disorients the horde, allowing him to kill most of it from concealment. He recovers, gains Limit Break, eliminates the remaining boars, and brings down the Horde Leader's defenses with a collapsing pillar and a fully charged Infused Powershot. In the final exchange, Jake closes to melee and poisons the wounded Beast Lord until its own last attack helps kill it. The level-99 Horde Leader leaves behind an Epic Tusk filled with hatred for the King of the Forest, matching the revenge purpose of the Nest Watcher's curse. With all four Beast Lords dead, Jake has completed the dungeon chain. The tutorial's final opponent is now forced to appear, while Jake holds two weapons specifically designed to weaken it.
Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)
The King of the Forest offers Jake an immediate safe conclusion to the tutorial or a lethal battle for a greater reward. Jake chooses to fight despite learning that his strongest shot barely scratches the D-grade, tree-like ruler. After being overwhelmed, he hides his plan behind ineffective attacks and slips the Nest Watcher's curse through the King's defenses. He then drives the Horde Leader's Tusk into its body. With the King's senses and energy impaired, Jake places the poisoned Corrupted Moon Core Shard into the wound and survives its explosion behind the Horde Leader's shield. Both fighters are left near death. The King uses soul magic to break Jake's consciousness, but an instinctive part of Jake takes control and pushes Limit Break beyond its safe threshold. Jake kills the level-136 King, overturning the forecast that he could not win. The system heals him, ends the tutorial, and moves him to a post-tutorial reward room.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
The system credits Jake as the tutorial's sole survivor, grants exceptional titles and levels, and awards him control of one city-level Pylon of Civilization. From the tutorial store he chooses foundational tools and abilities, including two cauldrons, One Step Mile, an adaptable tool, and a perception-based gaze that merges with his enhanced sight. Jake accepts the Malefic Viper's invitation for accelerated training while Jacob and Bertram train separately with the Holy Church. In the Viper's realm, the godly alchemist Duskleaf helps instruct Jake. A poison trial secretly escalates when the Viper adds primordial blood, forcing Jake into a conflict within his own soul. Jake defeats a possible self defined by submission to the Viper and claims the true blood without abandoning his identity. His blessing and poison-related abilities grow substantially. He then chooses Sagacity of the Malefic Viper while rejecting devotional, sacrificial, and command-oriented paths.
Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)
Before Jake returns to Earth, the Malefic Viper confirms that Robert, Deborah, Caleb, and Maya are alive but withholds their location. The Holy Mother orders Jacob neither to oppose nor ally with Jake, while Casper returns among the undead and rejects their leadership. On the transformed and enlarged Earth, Jacob organizes survivors. He and Jake reach a limited reconciliation, exchanging potions and information before Jake departs. Casper silently acknowledges Jake but follows a separate route. Jake travels into the forest, kills the beast contesting a Pylon of Civilization, and claims it. The pylon makes him an Earl, but he refuses the city-lord profession to protect his alchemy path. He relocates the structure to a concealed waterfall valley and begins training and brewing there. Two weeks later, Jacob has gathered thousands of people with Bertram and the archer Maria, while Jake reaches the verge of another alchemy milestone in isolation.
Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)
Jake rescues Hank, Mark, Louise, and Miranda from an Oakwood Tiger, restores Hank's severed arm, and permits the four survivors to shelter in his valley. Miranda studies the masked protector and negotiates with him despite their differing views about leadership and violence. While exploring beneath the valley, Jake discovers an underground biodome. He kills its apparent mantis ruler, only to awaken the true D-grade fungal network controlling the plants, roots, fumes, and constructs throughout the cavern. Unable to make his existing poisons persist against it, Jake escapes and begins planning a toxin designed for plants or fungi. Returning to the valley, he offers Miranda operational control of the settlement. She accepts his Viscount title and the city-lord profession under a written agreement that leaves Jake with final veto and responsibility for protection. The hidden pylon now has a formal administrator, while Jake remains free to focus on strength and alchemy.
Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)
Miranda begins using her city-lord abilities to plan the settlement while keeping the waterfall valley and its pylon concealed. Hank becomes the main builder, Louise designs the structures, and Mark assists. Their first project is a lodge over the buried pylon with a secret cellar for Jake's alchemy laboratory. Jake studies how to create a slow poison capable of attacking the fungal network, then reaches level 70 in his alchemist profession. Given a choice between several Ancient abilities, he selects Wings of the Malefic Viper and starts learning to fly. His first attempts end in crashes, but continued practice lets him gain altitude and travel horizontally. Outside the settlement boundary, a level-90 hawk uses controlled wind and repeated physical corrections to teach him better balance and coordination. Jake rewards it with a stamina potion, and the hawk returns at night for another training session. The settlement is taking shape, the fungal ruler remains undefeated, and Jake's family is still alive but unfound.
How does it end? (ending)
Jake returns to an enlarged and dangerous Earth after killing the King of the Forest and receiving a claim to a Pylon of Civilization. He secures the King’s former territory, conceals the pylon in a waterfall valley, and remains the settlement's masked protector rather than its administrator. Miranda becomes his Viscount and city lord, while Hank, Mark, and Louise become citizens and construct a lodge over the hidden pylon. Jacob and Bertram lead a separate large survivor group under the Holy Mother's instruction to avoid both alliance and conflict with Jake, though Jacob and Jake exchange supplies and information. William has been revived by the white-haired primordial, and Casper returns as undead but chooses a separate path. Jake knows Robert, Deborah, Caleb, and Maya are alive, but he still does not know where to find them. His immediate challenges are developing a poison for the D-grade fungal ruler beneath the forest and mastering Wings of the Malefic Viper with help from a wind-manipulating hawk.
