A Red Listed Tomb Spark known as the Scourer. He rejects renewed Academy and House control and leads the seven-person escape party.

Naomi (Supporting)

Also known as the Nightmare Lady

Appears from the start

Scorio's formidable companion and fellow fugitive. Her clawed transformed body, bladed tail, and quick movement make her a decisive protector during the group's flight from Academy pursuers.

Jova Spike (Supporting)

An exceptional Tomb Spark and uneasy ally of Scorio. She refuses renewed Academy and House control and joins the seven-person escape party.

Praximar (Antagonist)

House Hydra's chancellor and the principal force behind the pursuit of Scorio's group. He offers Academy placement to students who capture the fugitives and uses Bastion's instability to extend Hydra's control.

House Kraken's autocrator (Supporting)

Appears from the start

House Kraken's autocrator, who intercepts the seven fugitives, warns them about Praximar's offer to their pursuers, and renews her House's offer of support.

Nissa (Supporting)

A former Red List exile who has become an ignited Great Soul and public leader of Bastion's civilian rebellion. She survives a House Hydra fire attack, shelters Scorio's group, and offers them access to underground safe houses.

Dola (Supporting)

A prominent civilian rebellion leader who carries an older grievance against Scorio. Despite that history, she grants him ten days to seek the White Queen's intervention before the uprising resumes.

Evelyn (Supporting)

A Manticore Dread Blaze sent to assess and escort the seven fugitives. Her animated hair can bind opponents, form defenses, and move her through a fight, and she offers the group a provisional route out of Bastion.

A Manticore Dread Blaze who tests the seven prospective recruits during their journey. He can assume a durable copper form, become insubstantial copper mist, and use a shroud.

House Kraken Pyre Lady (Supporting)

A senior House Kraken defender responsible for security across the farmlands. She can create a six-sword obsidian construct, raise black-glass blades, and assume a six-armed combat form against threats on the plains.

The Charnel Duchess whose preeminence covers the Fiery Shoals and much of the Rascor Plains. She destroys the fiends overwhelming Scorio's party, heals the wounded, and agrees to hear his appeal concerning Bastion.

A House Hydra Pyre Lady serving as a liaison at the Fiery Shoals. She approaches Scorio to assess his appeal, frames political truth as dependent on values, and warns him against trusting easy certainty.

the Iron Tyrant (Supporting)

A Blood Baron who supports the White Queen's planned transfer of authority and is intended to arbitrate the new order. His standing makes him an important military and political power beyond Bastion's four Houses.

Manticore's leader (Supporting)

Manticore's Dread Blaze strategist and nominal leader. He directs long-range planning and evaluates Scorio's group through a team match.

Ravenna Accardi (Supporting)

A former Academy acquaintance of Scorio who has joined House Kraken and now wears the House's robes.

Octavia (Supporting)

House Kraken's autocrator. She intends to recruit Scorio and uses Ravenna to approach him during a House gathering.

A political figure about whom Octavia directs Ravenna to seek information from Scorio.

Nox (Supporting)

Also known as Imperial Ghost Toad

A coal-mana fiend whom Scorio previously aided. Nox recognizes Scorio's mana, regards him as a friend, and challenges Bastion's simple claim that Great Souls and fiends are natural enemies.

Simeon (Minor)

A Manticore member who explains the vanished Chasm colonies and the expedition's search for an artifact.

The planner leading a small, hunted remnant of House Basilisk in Bastion's ruins. Her ability becomes more effective as a problem grows more complex, and she analyzes Scorio's account to organize a covert approach to Ravenna.

the Manticore prison-maker (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 62

A Manticore operative working with House Kraken during the assault on the Basilisk refuge. The prison-maker creates white prisms that immobilize captives and personally seals Scorio inside one.
