The Rascor Plains recap

In short (whole book)

Scorio and six companions flee Bastion, win a pause in its civilian uprising, and help secure reforms before joining Manticore for training in the Chasm. Manticore uses Scorio to trigger the Celestial Coffer disaster, frames him, and drops him into a gold-mana Crucible. His long imprisonment restores his fractured heart and carries him to Flame Vault. He escapes, reunites with Naomi, and returns to a Bastion ruled through Praximar's crackdown. After House Kraken captures them, Nox frees Scorio and the conspiracy is exposed. Scorio liberates Jova and the imprisoned House Kraken Pyre Lady, regains the support of reborn Leonis and Lianshi, and kills Praximar. Cleared by the Iron Tyrant, Scorio and Naomi reject every patron and leave together to hunt Manticore's escaped leader and investigate Last Rock, the Shepherds of Goodwill, and Hell's hidden order.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Scorio returned to life in Bastion as a Red Listed Great Soul and formed close bonds with Naomi, Leonis, and Lianshi. He advanced to Tomb Spark despite Praximar's attempts to control his Academy progress. Jova Spike emerged as both rival and ally, driven by her own search for power and the truth concealed by Bastion's institutions. Scorio and his companions ultimately rejected the Academy and all four Houses. Their independence left them exposed inside a city divided by House politics, poverty, and growing civilian anger.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Scorio, Naomi, Leonis, Lianshi, Jova, Juniper, and Zala leave the Academy together, only to face students promised rewards by Praximar for their capture. Their escape crosses a city sliding into martial law. When a House Hydra enforcer burns protesters, the fugitives intervene and Scorio kills him. Nissa, now an ignited rebel leader, shelters them underground. The rebellion is ready to rise against the Houses, but Scorio argues that an open revolt will become a massacre. Dola and the other leaders grant him ten days to seek intervention from the White Queen. House Basilisk's support for Nissa complicates the rebellion's motives, while the fugitives still need a way out of Bastion. At the Flame, Evelyn tests the group and accepts them provisionally on Manticore's behalf. She will escort them toward the Fiery Shoals, where Scorio hopes to secure reforms and pursue answers kept from them by the Academy and Houses.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Evelyn leads the seven fugitives out of Bastion and across the Ash Belt, rain wall, and protected farmlands. Along the way, Scorio and Jova compare their Tomb Spark abilities and begin moving from rivalry toward respect, while the remaining Emberlings train for advancement. Manticore's escorts test the group's coordination and make clear how far they remain below Dread Blaze strength. The journey grows more dangerous as powerful fiends press into settled territory. A poisonous swarm leaves much of the party incapacitated, and a second fiend attack gravely wounds Scorio and Jova. The White Queen arrives before the group is overwhelmed. She destroys the attackers, heals the wounded, and transports everyone to the Fiery Shoals. Scorio now has direct access to the regional power whose intervention he promised Bastion's rebels, but the sharp increase in fiend incursions signals a larger crisis across the Rascor Plains.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

At the Fiery Shoals, Scorio learns how vital the protected gold Crucible and Celestial Coffer are to the region. He presents Bastion's poverty, overcrowding, and political exclusion to the White Queen's council. She announces that she will leave the Rascor Plains for deep Hell and must replace her personal rule before departing. Her plan expands the Celestial Consortium, distributes gold mana among the Houses, imposes audits and hard oaths, and makes the Iron Tyrant an arbiter. Scorio reconnects the White Queen with Nissa, Dola, and the uprising's leadership. After several days of negotiation, the Queen's Accords incorporate almost all of the civilians' demands into Bastion's charter. The political victory creates tension between Scorio and Jova. He considers the reforms meaningful, while she fears he is losing focus on advancement and hidden truths. Their disagreement remains unresolved as Manticore's leader arrives to evaluate the group.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Manticore's leader tests Scorio's companions and offers them probationary membership, but Scorio's fractured heart makes his place conditional on exceptional work. He refuses an individual offer from the Iron Tyrant because it excludes his friends. Ravenna Accardi, now oath-bound to House Kraken, is ordered to compromise and question him. She admits the assignment, and Scorio gives her information linking Praximar to stolen mana. Scorio also meets Nox, an Imperial Ghost Toad whose account challenges Bastion's teaching about fiends. The White Queen then seals the new charter by taking hard oaths from the four autocrators and leaves the region. Bastion's immediate uprising has been diverted into political reform, but its strongest outside protector is gone. Scorio and his companions depart with Manticore for the Chasm, seeking advancement, independence, and deeper answers.

Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)

Manticore flies the recruits across the Rascor Plains to a camp at the Chasm, where it seeks an artifact in the ruins of vanished colonies. Scorio's reputation earns challenges, but his damaged heart and coal-tempered body leave him far behind established fighters. Manticore prescribes a punishing purge: he and Naomi spend months breaking stone, hauling debris, and wrestling without igniting their hearts. Their friends train conventionally, and Jova reaches Flame Vault while her estrangement from Scorio deepens. Leonis and Lianshi delay committing fully to Manticore because they will not abandon Scorio and Naomi. After five months, the pair has expelled an exceptional amount of coal mana and can begin tempering anew with stronger mana. Scorio's heart still leaks badly, but he is finally ready to train toward recovery. Manticore has meanwhile located its target vault and arranged for House Kraken's Pyre Lady to help breach it.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

Scorio begins healing his fractured heart with bronze mana while Manticore retrieves the Font from the Chasm's gold level at severe cost. The artifact can draw gold mana from underground, and Manticore intends to sell it to House Kraken. Scorio is entrusted with its activation sequence and travels with the recovering House Kraken Pyre Lady to demonstrate it at the Fiery Shoals. Instead of producing a controlled supply, the Font drains the Celestial Coffer, its ship, and nearby Great Souls. The Pyre Lady accuses the ship of theft, and House Kraken attacks as House Hydra enters the conflict. Scorio tries to stop her but is overwhelmed. Evelyn reveals that she is part of the operation, seals him inside a light coffin, and casts him down the shaft beneath the fortress. The apparent accident is a coordinated betrayal, and Scorio is left immobilized in the gold-mana Crucible while armed conflict erupts above.

Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)

Scorio remains trapped in a stasis coffin beneath the Crucible for an unknown span, unable to move or learn what happened after the Coffer attack. Isolation nearly destroys his mind. When a gold saurian cracks the coffin, lethal mana begins entering it. Scorio adapts his training technique to pass the excess through his heart and into nearby fiends. The sustained flow repairs his fractures, enlarges and completes his heart, and tempers his body in gold. Once the coffin fails, he survives the Crucible's hostile creatures and the disorienting effects of gold mana. Reflexive ignition opens his third trial, where he confronts a former life's decision between political advantage and punitive justice. He completes the trial and reaches Flame Vault. His transformed body gains wings, his shroud and command aura become far stronger, and his perfected heart can sustain ignition from ambient mana. Still unaware of events above, he begins climbing out to find his friends and confront those responsible.

Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)

Scorio escapes into a House Hydra facility and learns that more than a year has passed. Manticore has prospered, Praximar has risen, and Scorio is believed dead. Acting on reports that Naomi, Leonis, and Lianshi were killed, he accepts covert help from the House Hydra Pyre Lady and kills Evelyn. He then travels to the Chasm, where graves bearing his friends' names appear to confirm the loss. An attempt to kill another Manticore Dread Blaze nearly ends with Scorio's death, but Naomi emerges from the Chasm and saves him. She survived by advancing to Tomb Spark through silver mana and developing shadow movement, darkness, and new bladed-tail powers. Together they kill the Dread Blaze and reconcile after each had believed the other dead. Naomi confirms that the earlier Dread Blaze killed Leonis while she and Lianshi were forced to watch. Reunited, Scorio and Naomi commit to destroying Manticore's remaining leaders and eventually killing Praximar.

Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)

Scorio and Naomi attack Manticore's floating island, but its leader escapes to Bastion with a teleporter. Jova defends him, saying he promised the answers she wanted. Scorio later catches her during a battle in the rain wall and saves her from falling, but she breaks away without resolving their conflict. Scorio and Naomi return secretly to Bastion and find House Hydra openly terrorizing civilians. The rebellion has been crushed, Dola is dead, and the public has been taught that Scorio caused the Celestial Coffer disaster. Nissa admits that she knew some plot against him was coming but failed to warn him. She explains that Praximar used a loophole in the Queen's Accords to attack House Kraken, execute rebel leaders, and destroy or absorb House Basilisk. Nissa now serves a small surviving Basilisk cell and offers Scorio a route to its hidden leader.

Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)

The former Basilisk instructor studies Scorio's account and identifies Ravenna as the safest route to allies, although she expects House Kraken to set a trap. The attempted contact ends with Kraken and Manticore forces overrunning the Basilisk refuge. Ravenna participates in the ambush, Octavia turns public feeling against Scorio, and Manticore's prison-maker seals him in a white prism. Leonis and Lianshi are revealed alive after rebirth, now without memories of Scorio and under Praximar's authority. In the deepest Hydra dungeon, Nox answers Scorio's signal, dissolves the prism, and helps him free the captive House Kraken Pyre Lady. She reveals that Manticore used the Font to drain the Coffer, imprisoned her, and framed both Kraken and Scorio. The three kill the prison-maker and Simeon, then free Jova from another prism. Jova realizes that Manticore deceived her and joins the counterattack. Naomi survives but has lost the use of her legs to a mana-cutting wound. The reunited group enters Praximar's farewell feast to confront Hydra and Manticore openly.

Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)

The captive Pyre Lady's appearance turns House Kraken against Praximar, and the farewell feast erupts into battle. Manticore's leader flees. Zala joins Scorio after revealing that Manticore also imprisoned her, while Leonis and Lianshi reject Praximar's control despite lacking their former memories. Scorio pursues Praximar to the Academy. By continuously absorbing iron mana, he outlasts the chancellor's stronger attacks and kills him. A damaged book in Praximar's study points toward the Shepherds of Goodwill and a complete record in Last Rock's lost library. The Iron Tyrant investigates the conspiracy and clears Scorio and Naomi of the Coffer attack and related killings. They refuse every new affiliation and ask Bastion's rulers to honor civilian protections. Leonis and Lianshi choose service in the Iron Weald, Jova heads independently toward Last Rock, and Ravenna leaves for the war against the Blood Ox. Scorio and Naomi depart together, planning to hunt Manticore's escaped leader, investigate Last Rock and Hell's hidden order, and continue advancing toward Dread Blaze.

How does it end? (ending)

Scorio escapes Praximar's prison with Nox, frees the captive House Kraken Pyre Lady and Jova, and leads a counterattack at Manticore's farewell feast. Leonis and Lianshi reject Praximar's orders despite having no memories of their earlier lives with Scorio. Manticore's leader escapes, but Scorio pursues Praximar to the Academy and kills him. The Iron Tyrant's inquiry clears Scorio and Naomi of the Celestial Coffer attack. They refuse House and military patronage and leave Bastion together, seeking the escaped Manticore leader, Last Rock's lost library, and information about the Shepherds of Goodwill. Leonis and Lianshi depart for service in the Iron Weald, Jova travels independently toward Last Rock, and Ravenna leaves to support the war against the Blood Ox. Bastion remains politically unstable after Hydra's losses and the destruction of its rebel leadership.
