Jim (Protagonist)

Also known as Grebthar the Destroyer

Appears from the start

A human outsider who serves as mayor of Windfall Village. He is responsible for rebuilding the protected settlement, supporting its residents, and preparing it for the dangers beyond its barrier.

Shart (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Jim's bound demon familiar and magical adviser. He communicates with Jim mentally, helps him interpret unfamiliar magic and game-like rules, and is affected when Jim is hurt. Their binding keeps Shart closely involved in Jim's survival and decisions.

Fenris (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A defender of Windfall Village who helps secure food and protect the settlement. He is AvaSophia's husband and the father of JoeClarance and EveSophia. His field experience makes him one of Jim's principal companions when danger threatens the community.

JoeClarance

Appears from the start

Fenris and AvaSophia's son, with an interest in the legend of Grebthar the Destroyer.

Kappa (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A goblin-altered warg allied with Fenris and strongly protective of AvaSophia's family.

King Har Charles (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

An invading ruler whose forces have burned and displaced settlements while advancing toward coastal territory. Refugees are already fleeing the results of his campaign, although he remains offstage and his wider military purpose is not yet understood.

SueLeeta (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A hunter who works with Fenris to supply Windfall Village with food and leather.

Jarra (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Windfall Village's healer and an alchemist. She treats residents and seeks a dedicated alchemy station so she can produce potions more effectively. Her request competes with the settlement's need to use the same limited garden space for improved food production.

Badgelor (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

An intelligent war badger who becomes Jim's beastmaster companion. He can enlarge himself and tunnel through rock, using those abilities to free Jim from a mine collapse. He also binds Jim to an unresolved quest against an unidentified traitor.

Mar (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 14

Windfall Village's newly appointed town clerk. He reports to Jim and takes responsibility for routine quests, work assignments, and municipal administration.

the town tailor (Minor)

First appears in chapter 19

A Windfall resident who publicly challenges Jim over unpaid wages and the settlement's financial problems. He attempts to persuade the villagers that he should replace Jim as mayor.

Blots (Minor)

First appears in chapter 26

A displaced young man whose village was overrun by King Har Charles's forces. Jim hires him in Narwhal as a local guide in exchange for food and lodging.

King Tim Simon (Minor)

First appears in chapter 26

The ruler whose territory includes Narwhal. The crowded border city stands near the outer edge of his domain, where refugees from King Har Charles's campaign have gathered. His kingdom is at war, but the cause of the conflict is not yet known.

Bashara (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 39

A wizard who uses an illusion to pose as a bridge guard before attacking Jim with lightning and cold magic.

Dirge (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 40

A heavily armored, highly trained man-at-arms who leads the Puma bandits. He catches Jim at the bridge and inflicts a serious wound while trying to prevent his escape.

Zorlando (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 45

A mercenary captain who arrives at the Western Gate Fortress seeking entry to help Noobtown. He commands a disciplined but undermanned company and is willing to support a caravan if Windfall supplies additional archers.

the Weird Sisters (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 66

Goblin-aligned operators supporting the siege. One of them creates a convincing illusion of a siege cauldron, causing Windfall's raiders to mistake a false objective for the real one.
