In short (whole book)

Jim works to turn Windfall Village, also known as Noobtown, into a viable settlement by reclaiming its mine and seeking a trade route to Narwhal. The journey reveals a refugee crisis and a murderous bandit force led by Dirge. After surviving the puma forest, Jim finds an unnatural life spring and secures its reality-defying source. His planned campaign against the bandits is interrupted by a goblin siege. Windfall's defenders capture the siege cauldrons, destroy a hidden underground force, and manipulate the goblins and Dirge's Pumas into fighting each other. The barrier is restored and the Western Gate Fortress is retaken. Dirge escapes north with a small remnant, while Fenris and Zorlando depart with trade goods for Narwhal. Jim remains mayor and becomes a Mage Knight. Bashara is ultimately revealed to serve the Sphinx, whose search for the Shadow God's body continues.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Jim arrived in a world governed by classes, skills, and quests, accompanied by the demon Shart. He became responsible for a ruined settlement protected by a magical barrier and began rebuilding it as Windfall Village. Fenris emerged as one of the settlement's principal defenders, while Kappa, a goblin-altered warg, became an ally protective of Fenris's family. AvaSophia, JoeClarance, and EveSophia formed the family at the center of that protective bond. The valley remained threatened by goblins, and King Har Charles's campaign beyond it was displacing other communities. Windfall's safety depended on more than its barrier: the settlement needed food, restored buildings, useful trades, and enough defenders to survive renewed attacks. Jim entered this volume as its mayor, still bound to Shart and responsible for turning a precarious refuge into a functioning community.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

So far this book: Windfall Village has housed its residents but lacks food, materials, and productive work. Jim decides that reclaiming Iron Pass Mine will provide iron, magical crystals, and employment. He leads Fenris, SueLeeta, and Kappa against its goblin garrison. They drive away an elite shadow goblin, claim the site, and discover that its underground passages are filled with traps. The mine's new barrier protects only the surface, leaving the workings unsafe for laborers. Jim tries to clear the traps alone, gains rudimentary skill through repeated failures, and becomes pinned beneath a deadfall with severe injuries. Unable to reach Shart or free himself, he accepts help from an intelligent war badger on strict terms. Jim chooses the beastmaster specialization, accepts Badgelor as his companion, and takes on Badgelor's quest to kill an unidentified nearby traitor. Badgelor then enlarges himself and uses his tunneling power to split the rock trapping Jim.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Jim returns from the mine badly injured but alive. Information recovered from the goblins reveals that the death of their warg boss has triggered a valley-wide revolt by the wargs, giving Windfall a temporary interval to prepare. The reclaimed mine begins producing iron, and Windfall reaches level three. Jim chooses advanced metalworking and improves the mine, but learns that the town barrier can be worn down by a sufficiently large siege. A separate crisis emerges when he discovers that residents have been working without wages and that the settlement is close to insolvency. He starts paying wages, establishes a tax, and appoints Mar as town clerk to handle routine administration. A proposed contract to supply iron to Narwhal offers the best prospect of steady income, so Jim plans to travel there, establish the route, purchase supplies, and seek new residents.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Jim publicly defeats the town tailor's attempt to replace him and presents the Narwhal trade mission as Windfall's path out of its financial emergency. Residents entrust him with goods, money, and letters before he departs with Shart and Badgelor. On the road, Jim learns his first spell and gains the mage class, although his initial school offers little direct combat power. After passing through the Western Gate Fortress, he takes a dangerous route through puma territory. Repeated attacks over two days destroy much of his equipment, badly injure Shart, and cost Jim two fingers. Badgelor's strengthened bond helps him continue, and the three finally reach Narwhal. Jim arrives exhausted and severely injured, only to learn that a safer northern road existed.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Narwhal is crowded with hungry refugees displaced by King Har Charles's advance. Jim hires Blots, a young refugee, as his guide and learns that the southern road has been closed, trapping many displaced people in the city. After replacing his ruined gear, he attempts to expand his magic but finds that he cannot use the Fire Bolt scroll he receives without access to a second magical school. Jim then presents Windfall's trade proposal to Narwhal's authorities. Their records confirm that Windfall Village is the settlement commonly called Noobtown. The local ruler accepts the route in principle, but caravans cannot use the northern road because of the threat in the forest. Jim accepts responsibility for clearing that route and bringing Windfall's trade wagons through.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

The supposed puma threat on Narwhal's northern road proves to be the Puma gang, a bandit force that has murdered refugees. Jim resolves to stop them after discovering mass graves near one of their camps. His initial attacks alert stronger members of the gang, including a skilled hunter, and he is driven toward a bridge held by disguised bandits. Bashara, an illusionist and combat wizard, traps and wounds him, but Jim disrupts her concentration and confines her inside Shart's extra-dimensional storage. He then meets Dirge, the heavily armored leader of the bandits, on the bridge. Dirge breaks Jim's shoulder and destroys his staff, but Jim brings down the ground beneath Dirge's horse and escapes through the bridge structure. The bandit organization remains intact, and Jim is again badly hurt.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

Jim releases Bashara from storage before she suffocates and learns that she was a contracted mercenary. He brings her to the Western Gate Fortress as a prisoner, where she pays an 18-gold blood debt and becomes free to enter Noobtown. Along the way, Jim redirects refugees from a destroyed farming settlement toward Windfall, increasing pressure on its limited resources. At the fortress he meets Zorlando, a mercenary captain whose company could help secure the caravan route. Windfall grants temporary citizenship to dozens of refugees, but its finances and morale remain precarious. Jim prepares an ambush against Dirge's bandits and commits to facing Dirge himself. Bashara cannot join the attack because her former contract bars her from fighting the bandits for 30 days, and Jim detects her attempting to influence him during the planning meeting.

Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)

To prepare for Dirge, Jim enters the puma forest and fights until he reaches journeyman skill with the sword. The animals replenish at an impossible rate, leading him to a life-infused puma sustained by enormous reserves of healing energy. Jim, Shart, and Badgelor defeat it and discover a hidden life spring responsible for the forest's abnormal population. The spring restores Jim's missing fingers but also gives him temporary growths after he remains immersed too long. Shart identifies the spring's source as a reality-defying bug and stores it for study. Back at the fortress, Jarra converts material from Jim's life-energy growths into stronger healing potions for the coming operation. Before the force can march against the bandits, a runner reports that goblins have surrounded Windfall. Jim immediately redirects the militia and Zorlando's mercenaries toward the village.

Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)

Jim's force races back while the goblin siege steadily reduces Windfall's protective barrier. During the march, he gains access to a second magical school and learns Fire Bolt. SueLeeta scouts ahead, while Fenris and Zorlando serve as subordinate commanders in Jim's war party. Together they break a goblin roadblock and reach the settlement with few casualties. Windfall has patched its defenses but lacks the food and manpower for a prolonged siege. Jim expands the militia and unlocks new command abilities, while the town tailor argues unsuccessfully for surrender. SueLeeta then reports more than a thousand goblins stationed around multiple siege points. Jim's force is far too small to defend the exposed mine directly, so he abandons a conventional stand. He conceals the defenders in the woods and prepares to identify, capture, or destroy the magical implement driving the siege.

Story so far - through chapter 68 (this book)

The barrier contracts and reveals a cauldron near the mine as the likely siege implement. Jim plans a raid in which Fenris's militia distracts the camp, Zorlando's mercenaries seize the cauldron, and Jim and SueLeeta remove the sentries. The attack initially succeeds, but shadow goblins ambush the mercenaries and a Weird Sister creates an illusion that makes the raiders move a false cauldron. Jim confronts three Weird Sisters near the real implement while his allies arrive to support him. One sister is killed, another is recovered alive from the quarry, and the defenders overcome a summoned nature golem. Jim, Shart, and Badgelor finally force the actual cauldron downhill. Its removal collapses the mine, destroys that siege position, and resets the countdown. Windfall has captured one cauldron, but two more goblin camps remain.

Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)

Windfall regroups after taking the first siege cauldron, but the victory leaves its defenders injured and exhausted. Two large goblin camps remain, each protecting another cauldron, and the renewed siege countdown gives the town little time. One camp stands beside a stream that could flood a tunnel, while unstable sand protects the other from an underground approach. Their placement suggests that the enemy may understand Badgelor's abilities. The crisis deepens when Dirge's Pumas attack the Western Gate Fortress and begin moving toward Windfall. Jim must now account for the two goblin armies, the approaching bandits, and an elite goblin force still missing beneath the mine. Zorlando considers withdrawing his mercenaries as the danger grows, while Fenris remains committed to the settlement and his family. Jim creates a false battle plan, and SueLeeta allows a goblin to take it. The deception convinces both goblin camps that Dirge's Pumas are a relief force approaching Windfall. About 1,400 goblins leave their camps to attack the Pumas, creating an opening for Windfall to strike the remaining siege positions.

How does it end? (ending)

Windfall survives the siege after Jim directs the goblin armies into battle with Dirge's Pumas and his allies secure all three siege cauldrons. Jim exposes the town tailor as the goblins' informant and uses the unstable life-energy orb to eliminate the underground attackers. The town's barrier is fully restored, and its defenders retake the Western Gate Fortress. Dirge loses most of his force but escapes north with 82 survivors. Jim remains mayor and specializes as a Mage Knight. Shart retains the dangerous orb, Badgelor's obligation against an unnamed betrayer remains unresolved, and Fenris leaves with Zorlando to resume the Narwhal trade mission. SueLeeta, Jarra, Mar, and the other surviving defenders remain part of Windfall's recovery. Bashara reports to the Sphinx after the conflict, and the search for the Shadow God's body continues elsewhere in the Riverlands. King Har Charles's campaign and his war with King Tim Simon also remain unresolved.
