Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Theo (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A returned traveler from Earth whose young body no longer holds the soulcrafter power he once possessed. He knows the Nine Worlds from an earlier life, conceals that history from those around him, and intends to rebuild with a more defensive soul home while pursuing an old betrayal.
Ichili woman (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A displaced soulcrafter overwhelmed by Tatian sunlight and repeated unwanted contact. Her frightened attack shows the danger of the cultural and sensory gulf separating the newly arrived refugees from their hosts.
Fiyu (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
The Ichili woman stranded on Tatian after an interworld disruption. She accepts a light-blocking blindfold and Theo's help, then agrees to seek soulcrafter training while waiting for a relative who may be able to retrieve her.
Jake (Protagonist)
First appears in chapter 2
The name Theo gives Fiyu and the Tatian hosts while concealing his past. Under this identity he proposes a training arrangement for the stranded travelers and begins forming a practical alliance with Fiyu.
Arbai Mundine (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
A stranded stone-bodied scholar who shapes part of himself into a plate, allowing Theo to make Fiyu a protective blindfold. He has never left his own world before the disruption deposits him on Tatian.
Magnafor (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
A threatening returnee from Earth who claims to have reached the Dominion tier before dying to a powerful demon. He warns Theo that repeated returns attract abnormal danger, advises distrust of other Earth travelers, and takes an evident interest in the risks surrounding them.
Navim (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
The Arbai Mundine scholar traveling with the displaced group. A capable stone shaper, he agrees to make Theo a light spear carrying force and piercing properties even though Theo has not yet regained soulcrafter power.
Famage (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A Tatian farm guard nearing ascension who fought during the village defense. He directs the stranded travelers toward Mufuru, where they can exchange public service for training and compete for valuable materials.
Nanjuma (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 7
Famage's uncle and the head of Mufuru Landguard Village. He oversees the training program for displaced soulcrafters and its guarded stores, while his concealed soul home suggests power well beyond the rank he displays.
Nauda (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 9
A Tatian training-family leader who fights with a forked, stone-set staff. She chooses Fiyu, Theo, and Kuber for her group and aims to win the school's rewards so she can advance her own soul home.
Kuber (Minor)
First appears in chapter 9
A Tatian student selected for Nauda's training family. His soul home has an unusually broad foundation, making him a potentially useful addition to a group preparing for instruction and competition.
Navim's elder master (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 28
A powerful stone-bodied scholar at Navim's school who possesses a weirkey. He secures treatment for his critically damaged student and offers the stranded companions passage back to Tatian in return for future accounts of worlds beyond the Nine.
Landguard investigator (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 30
An authority-tier landguard who questions Nanjuma after the destruction at Mufuru. Claiming that arrivals from beyond the Nine attract demons, the investigator represents a wider effort to identify and control displaced outsiders.
Lord of Nlukoko (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 33
The independent ruler of Nlukoko, a commercial city outside ordinary landguard control. Nauda warns that he is stronger than a ruler and that antagonizing him would be exceptionally dangerous.
Senka (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 36
A small blue, white-haired, adult-seeming humanoid whom Theo rescues during the Nlukoko demon breach. She speaks in an unusual manner, attaches herself to Theo, and follows the travelers through the gate despite their uncertainty about her nature.
Bartolo Ein of Fythe (Protagonist)
First appears in chapter 43
The Dusan cover identity Theo presents to a local family leader after intervening in a court dispute. The name supports his attempt to navigate family politics without exposing his true history.
Dusan rival (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 50
A noble hunter who leads an advanced sleigh team during the great rainhorn hunt. He offers to double the group's reward if they take at least half as many rainhorns as his team, with a duel against Theo as the penalty for failure.
Pike-wielding archcrafter (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 55
An archcrafter serving the Dusan family force that pursues Theo's group across the northern wasteland. He carries a pike and joins the attempt to corner the travelers while a ruler-tier sublime beast threatens both sides.
Red-bannered house authority (Minor)
First appears in chapter 66
An erratic authority who abruptly replaces his house's recruitment trial with a test of endurance under overwhelming pressure. He strikes Nauda down after she outlasts nearly every applicant, then dismisses all candidates.
House Blacksilver official (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 67
The administrator who evaluates the travelers during House Blacksilver's soul-home trial and becomes their working contact after recruitment. The official offers merit-based contracts and explains the costly route to the house's available chasm invitations.
Elderly Dusan ruler
First appears in chapter 69
An elderly Dusan ruler who arrives with an Anguadan group and approaches Theo after another member disappears from view.
Dusan family head (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 70
An elderly ruler leading the family that has followed Theo to Norro Yorthin. He treats Theo's knowledge of a historical Dusan family as dangerous, attacks when Theo cannot satisfy him, and presses a vendetta that results in a delayed formal duel.
House Crimson authority (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 98
An authority with a personal interest in breaking Nauda's resolve. Before Theo's duel, he humiliates and threatens her, then stakes a chasm invitation on an insulting wager that Theo will lose.
Older House Crimson authority (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 98
A senior House Crimson authority who responds to the younger authority's treatment of Nauda by giving Nauda and Fiyu a potent sublime spice as an apology.
Dusan family elder (Minor)
First appears in chapter 99
The elder who speaks for the expelled Dusan household after its champion loses. He explains that inquiry into a family destroyed about a century earlier has repeatedly led to death, demons, and renewed destruction.
